Eliminating toll takers doesn’t seem to really save money in the long run. For example, the Pennsylvania turnpike got rid of all their toll collectors and instituted toll by mail for people without EZ PASS, and the last I read, they’re $100 million and counting in uncollected tolls that people haven’t mailed in 🙄.

Those "platform gates" aka electronic turnstiles were made more for travelers with suitcases than anyone else since it's Jamaica/Archer and upstairs is the LIRR AND the air train. I live in Montreal and until 2021, I had never seen anyone jump turnstiles or go in with someone else. Obviously it was happening prior, but not as frequently. A couple months ago, I pushed the button to exit the gate and someone entered while the gate was still open. Now, when I use the gates to exit, if I see someone approaching to enter, I stand in front of them until they close. Not saying they weren't going to pay, but I don't know that. I pay for transit and they should, too. The STM is bleeding money. Nowadays, I see a lot of people get on the bus without paying and the drivers aren't allowed to stop them in case of violence (however I've seen drivers tell the passenger to get off).
The gates open up too slowly. They need to be faster and heavier. The MTA need to design the gates like the London Underground gates. But just to let you know people still tailgate. I don’t think you can stop people from dodging fairs but you can try and reduce it.
The MTA is really stupid. We are the capital of the world and we can’t create an innovative strategy for fare evasion. I call this ridiculous and a waste of time.
I think it's easy to do Fare Evasion in Subway system because there are no strict rules. but if you do fare envasion in commuter rail ex. Lirr, MNRR, Metrolink you can fight with the conductor argue for not paying the fare police will be called and removed fare cheater from the train. I believe subway system need to be stricter with their policy.
What they need is to actually put full gates up that are like 10 feet tall. Because I’m looking at this one and someone can easily hop around the other side. It’s not fair that people keep jumping the turn style without paying when I always pay. They definitely need to do something about it.
The security guards are at Hunts Point Station and they let people jump the turnstile they don't even stop you. Perhaps they're scared or maybe they don't want to say anything to cause any confrontation.. these guys are a Hunts Point and yet they let people jump the turnstile
I just don''t understand how can they actually do that. They clearly have ability to pay based on their appearance and yet, they avoid to pay for the service they are getting. I would be so ashamed doing that while someone seeing me doing that, and these people clearly don't give a single f while avoiding paying.
They're disrespectful, entitled jerks. If they were a store owner and they caught someone shoplifting a chocolate bar, they wouldn't hesitate to call the police.
With all the migrants how many of them are going to pay the fair. If American see lots of them not paying why are Americans going to want to pay. They have to start inforcing fair evasion.
I think the faregates have a higher bottom that is high above the floor to allow ducking the faregates. The fare evasion problem is not completely solved yet. Christian people call fare evasion "Stealing a ride."
It’s horrible!! And we the struggling hard working city workers pay for this ! Out of out taxes ! It’s disgusting how this city has become Not a smart idea to come up with something like this I guess they want New York to turn into the wild Wild West ! 🙄☝🏼
Having new subway platform gates isn't going to stop fare evasion because I seen the video that people are walking through these gates without paying their fare and it's costing the MTA money for fare evasion and the MTA needs to come up with a newer plan so it can make it harder for people to evade the fare that's all.
I bet they paid some contractors about 12 million dollars to construct these gates that people are still sneaking through, what a waste as usual, then they want more money from “ Congestion Pricing “, to give to other gate geniuses
Since contactless payments are going to be the future anyway, why not make the space between the two sides of any entry turnstile be a "readable" area, therefore the actual design and function of the swinging gate would be less critical because if they are carrying a contactless payment "method" (card or phone) it would still deduct fare even if the try to sneak through behind paying riders or custodial employees? I would guess that the majority of fare evaders still probably have a payment method on their person if if they occasionally evade. Sure it's a little creepy (big brother and all) but wouldn't that work for the most part and significantly reduce evasion?
The offices are getting paid to stand there and watch people go through what's the purpose of pain somebody to stand there and watch people go through can I get that job to watch people
This doesnt work. Instead why not make a pass like ez pass for everyone. In order to enter the subway system ya need it. The gates, like customs entry. no entry to the subway without it.

Someone designed this to prevent fare evasion and other higher ups signed off on it. This is the biggest blunder since the occulus.
they should have just kept the turnstile... lol
But they only fine people in poor communities
No they fine white people lmao
Interesting video, Sifat but from what I saw, this new system is a fail. Not sure what the answer is but this doesn’t seem to be it. 🤷♂️
I hate tap systems;
Germs!
Metrocard was better because you either swipe or bends it and you don’t have to touch anything like a screen
As long as there is a disproportinate amount between the haves and have nots... fare beating, looting and crime will continue. It's about the economy.
They are are going to loose way more money this way 😂😂😂
What they need is to actually put full gates up that are like 10 feet tall. Because I’m looking at this one and someone can easily hop around the other side. It’s not fair that people keep jumping the turn style without paying when I always pay. They definitely need to do something about it.
did you see the video. no need to hop around.
Good morning everyone
NO ONES PAYING FOR THAT WALKTHROUGH
LADY WITH BROWN DUFFLEBAG
People will still find a way to evade paying the fare. It's a constant cat and mouse game between riders and the MTA
Some people are broke and some are poor. They cannot afford a $150 metro card… l wish them better luck and get back on their feet again.❤
The security guards are at Hunts Point Station and they let people jump the turnstile they don't even stop you. Perhaps they're scared or maybe they don't want to say anything to cause any confrontation.. these guys are a Hunts Point and yet they let people jump the turnstile
It’s the Bronx, I wouldn’t say a thing either 😂 as long as I’m getting paid to just stand there
oops caught on camera .... but no one cares.
😂😂😂 lol now about 7 gates for fare evasion. Instead of 1. MTA is so smart lol
What a waste of money, half of the people are not paying...Brilliant!
Why are you putting those fare evaders on blast?
Do you know their financial situation?
You'll get in trouble one of this days..
exactly. So easy to judge.
If you can afford a pair of jordans, you can afford $2.90 stop rewarding bad behavior
very entertaining but yeah lot of abusers here. police arent doing anything to be honest.
With all the migrants how many of them are going to pay the fair. If American see lots of them not paying why are Americans going to want to pay. They have to start inforcing fair evasion.
Keep the migrants out of this jeeez stay focused on this situation
I think the faregates have a higher bottom that is high above the floor to allow ducking the faregates. The fare evasion problem is not completely solved yet. Christian people call fare evasion "Stealing a ride."
It’s horrible!! And we the struggling hard working city workers pay for this ! Out of out taxes ! It’s disgusting how this city has become
Not a smart idea to come up with something like this I guess they want New York to turn into the wild Wild West ! 🙄☝🏼
"Come on & take a free ride" Tavares 😲 smh
Law and Order is the only way as it was in the 1990s. Don't pay then do community service or jail and fines!!!
Having new subway platform gates isn't going to stop fare evasion because I seen the video that people are walking through these gates without paying their fare and it's costing the MTA money for fare evasion and the MTA needs to come up with a newer plan so it can make it harder for people to evade the fare that's all.
A bit time consuming considering people are in a rush in NYC
Officers ain’t doing anything because there’s too many fare evaders
I actually fare evade all the time and let me tell you this design is much more easier to bypass than the original doors.
Kids see those evaders and i worry
I bet they paid some contractors about 12 million dollars to construct these gates that people are still sneaking through, what a waste as usual, then they want more money from “ Congestion Pricing “, to give to other gate geniuses
Trees r god trees r JagataraNatha/BrahmandaraNatha cuz Dey gives us oxygen (Rocky Planet🔁🌳🔁🌦️)
why would you have both exit and entry through the same gates? That's clearly not working at all and it's not efficient.
Where's this station at? I need to get to NYC for a free ride?
That transit worker should be responsible for letting those people in without paying
He is doing his job, why does he need to pay the price for other people’s actions
What good are the unarmed security guards when they cannot or detain anyone?!
Didn't the old turnstile design prevent most of this?
They need armed officers. So does Washington DC and other cities.
The police is standing a mile away..............
This is stupid, might as well make public transportation free in the whole state and just add a tax to the people.
The offices are getting paid to stand there and watch people go through what's the purpose of pain somebody to stand there and watch people go through can I get that job to watch people
that lady with the baby carriage almost got in the way
Put some oil on your wheels
This doesnt work. Instead why not make a pass like ez pass for everyone. In order to enter the subway system ya need it. The gates, like customs entry. no entry to the subway without it.
It looks cool but it’s already flawed
Need a better plan
Definitely, these new gates only make the fare evasion problem worse.
It's interesting to see how rushed everyone is.
clearly they wasted money 😂
