Kenny Dorham was not only one of the finest trumpet stylists of all time, but also an incredible composer. He was truly underrated as a trumpeter but he's one of my top 10 favorite jazz composers along with Monk, Horace Silver, Strayhorn, Ellington, Bill Lee and others. Yes, that's a young Herbie Hancock along with some of the baddest Joe Henderson every recorded and an even younger (only 17 yrs old) Tony Williams along with Butch Warren. Honestly, Tony is playing his best on this record. He never played better than on this, his very first ever recording date!! K.D. knew how to put a band together to put his music forward in the best way possible. I transcribed Joe's entire tenor sax solo and my transcription was published in DownBeat magazine some years ago.

I particularly enjoy Joe Henderson's solo on that great track : it is all at once laid-back and adventurous, soulful and playful ! Would it be crazy to recognize at the beginning of it what will be the theme/bass line for Coltrane's "Acknowledgment" ("A Love Supreme" was issued a year later...) ?
