How does the edger accommodate different board thicknesses?

I'm still confused what if one of the first boards has 2 knarly edges how do you keep the first edge straight?

There is hanging straight edge to line up your wayne. You will never wear a belt out.

The feed belt how hard is that to change

Very simple. There's a small diameter nylon coated wire that is threaded through the lacings. Takes about 5 minutes per belt. These belts are tough, they don't need to be changed often, even with heavy use.
