Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are in a class of their own. Those two ladies, not only had/have God-given talent but they worked hard and have mad hits. Many other singers may have good voices but they are not on the level of these two ladies. They were able to become friends because talent recognizes talent.

You were absolutely correct. She was forced to do this MTV Unplugged to shut the rumors about her being a studio artist. Look at now, she's a legend and an icon that most of the pop girls look up to.
That was pretty dumb considering she already did like 50 live performances before this.

Yes her vocals are insane with this show. She has another single called " Bliss " that she wrote for 1999 album Rainbow that she basically whistles throughout most of the song & she is singing words into her whistles as well. Mentioning her covers she also did on her albums were " The beautiful ones " by Prince, " against all odds " by Phil Collins, " bringing on the heartbreak " by Def Leppard, " i want to know what love is " by Foreigner & " one more try " by George Michael. Oh & Badfinger was the original for Without You

Yes Mariah was being heavily criticized during this time. This is due in large part over the Milli Vanilli scandal. Since Mariah had done only a few live performances up until this time, many thought she may be another fake singer the music industry put out. Her voice was so unique and had such a range it was hard for people to believe a voice like that really existed and they were still really jaded by the Milli Vanilli debacle. Mariah took the opportunity with the MTV unplugged. People knew MTV unplugged reputation for microphone and live instruments and were shocked with this performance and became highly requested to play on mtv that they released it as an album and VHS of here performance. This was a pivotal moment in her career. This EP stayed on the billboard 200 charts for 57 weeks.... Wow

I had the unplugged CD and i wore it out !! Still have the CD ! Love Mariah till this day ! Ans yes, this was when the critics were accusing her of not being able to sing live, but she said she had stage fright .. also Chante Moore can also do the whistle register. Check her out live singinf its alright her voice is magical, and she hits that whistle effortlessly as well !
When this came out it was INSANE!!! And also this started the Mariah thing about doing covers, here her most succesfull one: I'll be there, which went to number 1.
And that pianist too was GETTIN’ it! I mean I have no words for Mariah’s voice here. INSANE. But that pianist man was slaying. Mariah also silenced the critics that said she was only a studio songbird with this performance.
Fun fact the Pianist here is David Cole from C+C Music Factory fame.

@@jokina9289 A singer is never made up of their voice alone. We need to see how that singer uses his voice. And how they have contributed to music in general. There are many other voices like Whitney's, but no one has used their voice as extraordinarily as Mariah.

I can think of two other singers who are just as good and precede Mariah Carey check Mimi Riperton''s live performance of "Loving you". The other one is Lisa Fisher her live version if "Ease the pain". Both ladies talent is beyond insane.
