This is the first time I've been able to find a video that addresses this EXACT question I've had for a week. With hurricane season approaching us here in Florida, I've been hoping to rely on a solar generator, rather than a gas powered one, so that I can run the solution indoors, and also avoid the stress of trying to find fuel in case people panic-purchase all of the gas in our area...
Glad I could help.
I had older refrigerator and it had large startup surge but my big portable power stations ran it OK. After seeing this video I bought a new LG Top Freezer Refrigerator, but it did not want to run on any of my portable power stations, I would unplug it from the AC outlet and plug it into the power station and it would not start up and run. Found out that when you unplug it from 120 AC outlet, when it is not running, and plug it into portable power station it draws around 208 watts for about 15 to 20 minutes and then runs fine on a portable power station. I think it goes into a defrost cycle anytime it is unplugged and plugged back in outlet. Thanks for you video, I am now all set for power outages, and saving on my high electricity rate.
Great review. Thank you.
If that Ecoflow Delta 1300 gives you 12 hours of continuous power on the fridge, that’s amazing.
I put an ice bag in my freezer and the main refrigerator area and it keeps it cool enough for about 4 hours and it’s usually back on. Don’t open the refrigerator unless absolutely necessary. After that this would be my next best option. Then a generator.
Great video. You always put so much information in your videos. Thank you.
Great insight on my solar project. Thanks
Glad I could help. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video!
Thanks for much for the video it gave me more buying options when it comes to battery powered generators.
Glad I could help
Very important info compressed. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great information thank you!
You bet!
Very informative! Thank you for going in depth into the subject.
So helpful! We are in the market for a fridge, and we now plan to get an LG with that inverter. We have a solar generator called Bluetti AC200. My husband says it would work great with it. You always have such useful no nonsense videos. Keep em up!
thank you. i just bought the same refrigerator by coincidence. Now all i need is the power station
Did it work?
@PreppingOver50 didn't get thd power station yet
Great video I went with the lowest energy star rating I could find in kwh per year and ended up with a Kenmore 21 cubic foot refrigerator. On the sticker it says 230 watts for defrost and if I multiply 115v by 2 amps, I get 230. This doubled my run time on a 2000wh lipo4 leoch power station and got roughly 12 hours on a 50% charge. Currently looking for a good dc fridge to hook up to cigarette port on the delta max but just found out the inverter is so powerful there's a parasitic drain.
Well explained. Thanks for the details!
Thank you for the information it will come in handy!
Thanks so much for this demo. My current refrigerator won’t run from my River Pro, and we were notified of a pending power outage of up to 8 hours due to a planned power pole replacement. Seeing your demo complete with model numbers got me over the inertia of replacing our ~30 year old refrig with the LG LRFLC2706, which was even on sale at Lowe’s. I hope I can confirm it’s compatibility with the River Pro upon delivery! The amp draw of our old one is marked as 6.5, and the RP gave an overload signal even with X-boost turned on. Thanks so much for your video!
Glad I could help. Just be sure it is an inverter fridge and the River Pro can handle what the label says max amps/watts are.
LG customer service confirmed that it has the smart inverter compressor. The wattage is well within the River Pro’s capabilities. Of course I will try it out when it is delivered.
New LG fridge was delivered and cooled down. When it next cycled on the compressor, I switched its plug to the River Pro. It did not immediately kick back on the compressor but made some funny intermittent noises. I freaked out and re-plugged it into AC. I made the same noises, but eventually restarted the compressor. Does you combo do the same thing? I was afraid something was going to get damaged. BTW Do you do anything about grounding?
Not sure what noises you hear, sorry. Its never good to unplug and plug back in any fridge often, just so you know. I do nothing extra about grounding.
Always shut refrigerator off with swith inside the fridge
Thank you very much for being thorough. I will have to put together a binder so I will be prepared for a power outage!
Let me know how it goes. Any questions, please ask!
Cool! I just bought an LG. I looked it up, and it has the inverter. I had no idea! I didnt bother checking it with my killawatt meter because I assumed I would not be able to run my jackery on it. I will check it tonight!
Good luck! Let me know how it turns out.
Very nice. I have a Jackery 500 and 1000 and always been curious if I could pull this off by cycling between the two during an outage. I keep a Dometic Fridge on hand as well for traveling and outages but obviously there’s nowhere near the storage capacity of our kitchen fridge.
Check out my wireless thermometer video. I talk about using it for power outages. This along with you rotating the jackerys, would be a plan.
The question for me would be, will a "smart" refrigerator withstand an EMP while plugged in? If not, how would one protect that refrigerator while it is plugged in during an EMP? I have a new Samsung with a digital inverter. Thanxz for all you do! Love the channel!
A ferrite of some kind around the power cable may work, some say. I really dont know if they work. I think a device with a circuit of some kind may end up damaged even when not plugged in. So, I wouldn't count on it working.
@@LoneStarPrepping I did a little more digging and it looks like the best case scenario would be to install an EMP full house device to our power box. It'd be worth the $500. It's just a matter of time that America is invaded after an EMP attack! That's why the powers that shouldn't be never upgraded our national infrastructure! While in the meantime China's was completely upgraded! We have been sold out from within! Rome 2.0!
In the event of EMP the *LAST THING* I'd worry about is how to keep that 1/2 gal of milk cold in the refrig
@willbass2068 I never said anything in my video about an emp. In fact, trying to deal with no power in general would be the least of my concerns with a major emp, which you would know if you saw my video "How to survive an emp". So, yes, I agree with you.
@@LoneStarPrepping I addressed my (sardonic) comment to OP, he mentioned EMP, not you.
good stuff, you can also use a wattmeter to watch the usage in real time
I talked about the kill a watt meter in the video. I also use a clamp meter and line splitter so I can find max amps and multiply with volts. The clamp meter I use will record and remember max amps over time so I dont have to rely on observation for max watts. You can see my setup in my 3 part video series.
Sir , I’m looking for a couple , one to power my fridge and one for my deep freezer in case of a power outage. I had the Ecoflow delta and the blueetti EB705 , would these be sufficient or are they overkill. It’s just a small little apartment size deep freeze and my fridge is a basic size full fridge, one door for the fridge and one for the freezer ?
No idea. What are the surge watts and running watts of the fride and freezer? You can watch my 3 part video that will show you how to find out what you can run and for how long...
Keep it up
Does your fridge ever run at 180w constantly on solar, I have a Samsung new 28.2 and it runs constantly at 180watts
Solar has nothing to do with it. By solar, I am guessing you mean a portable power station of some kind. It will demand what it wants no matter what the source. It does not run constantly at any one wattage demand. It varies. In fact, it basically shuts down when cool enough and runs at different load demands throughout a 24hr cycle.
how would the river run a 3.2cu. fridge and a deep small freezer full time with solar panals
It all depends on how much power the fridge uses on average per hour and how many watts your panels provide and whatever you have the panels hooked up to. I have a series on my channel that teaches how to figure all this out. It takes work on your part, though. "What can you run on your solar generator and for how long"
@@LoneStarPrepping I can run that small set up at 180 watts on,and off through the day.thats the compressor turning on with both the fridge, and freezer.Average wattage is about 80.Now mind you that is a ac200p I did that with. The ac200p with a traditional fridge is about 130watts.
@@richardjones7882 ua-cam.com/video/yoPLzOlUez0/v-deo.html
Can you charge with solar and run your fridge at the same time?
Yes. If you have enough sun, panels and inverter and battery, you can run it all day without even using any of the battery.
Why do you think your refrigerator with survive the EMP pulse?
I never said it would.
You said 84 watts per hour is that taking into it cycling on & off? In other words does it use 2,016 whrs per day(24hrs)?
I said "84 watt hours per hour on average". On average means taking into consideration when it shuts off not using anything, when it is running a couple hundred watts while defrosting and lower running watts. That's this fridge in my kitchen at my temp. Others may be different. You may want to watch the entire video again because I cram a lot of info in such a short period of time. I also have videos that show how to calculate this kind of thing.
Can regular appliance service repair man repair the LG or you have to find special LG repair person? More expensive to maintain?
Don't know. I'm pretty sure most appliance repair can deal with it. They have been out for a long time.
Could you charge the solar generator without panels for example using a car battery with a Bestek 300 watt pure sine inverter? Could you do a video?
Yes. I will be doing a video about my Champion Dual Fuel (propane) generator and how I use it to charge my solar generstor when needed. All of my ecoflows can charge via cig lighter outlet.
@@LoneStarPrepping have you done a video on your eco charging from cigarette lighter or something similar that could be demonstrated to us please? I’m in Texas and trying to figure out what to us during the winter if the power grid goes down again
@@jenniferhardy7077 Im in Texas as well. Check out my videos on how we handled the outage. I dont have video on plugging into cig lighter. I may include that when I do propane generator video. What kind of portable power station do you have?
@@LoneStarPrepping I’m still trying to figure it out by watching a lot of videos but my husband wants a propane/gas and I’m leaning more towards solar generators
@@jenniferhardy7077 look into bluetti, ecoflow and jackery...
Great video but AC wise never use 115v in your calculation just use 120v and multiply it by amps and your good. Inverter efficiency is usually around 80% to 85% but some newer units from Bluetti and Ecoflow are hitting 91% efficiency
Thank you. That is why I thought I made it clear in my video that I multiply my 120 household volts The 115 is there to show the minimum needed to run. Actually, you don't get watts when multiplying Amps and Volts in an AC circuit, only in DC. You get a VA number, which is likely to be higher unless it is a resistive load as with the heating element in the fridge. I have seen inverter efficiency range from 75% to 95%. Although my EcoFlows that I showed are about 80% efficient, as per my own testing, you are correct about newer models appearing to be more efficient than that. I can't wait to test my Delta Pro and review it when I get it. I was number 77 on the super early bird pledge on Kickstarter.
@@LoneStarPrepping You will get your Delta pro before I get mine lol. I would use a killawatt meter, and do a full discharge running something either at 1C or 0.5C then take that value, and divide it into the rated capacity for the efficiency. If you already knew this then disregard what I've said.
I referred to a link in my video when I talked about this. I demonstrate testing the efficiency.
Why does a Refrigerator need to defrost that many times a day? Sometimes i think some of the engineers are on Hallucinogens
It doesnt have to defrost several times a day.
@@LoneStarPrepping my thought exactly
I meant to say it doesnt defrost many times a day... more like 1 or 2 times in 24 hours.
Why not just buy a bigger generator?
The video was about the best fridge for any portable power system, large or small. It was not about what size gen to buy. Even with a "larger generator", you want a fridge that will have less demand so the gen will run it longer. And, I wasnt suggesting someone toss their old fridge for a more efficient one so they can run a solar gen on it. The video is about considering a more efficient fridge IF you already in the market for one.
Can u tell me what solar portable generator is best for fridge freezer
Bluettie ecofliw. 4patriots orhe?? I'm looking for jy brother just what is best to plug in run fridge and then on solar panels thnks
Sorry, there is no way I can answer this. There are too many variables. I have a 3 part video series on my channel that teaches how to figure this kind of thing out.
Hello sir i have an ecoflow delta pro 3600 and solar panel 1600watts . My plan is i want to run 10 inverter freezers at the same time for my ice business. What do you think? Is the delta pro can handle it? Every single ref has 186watts hour .
Depends on watt hours on average per hour. Dont use the 1600 watts in calculation at first because there may be no sun. I have a video series that shows you how to figure this out on my channel.
