It's a wonder so many monuments and buildings from the Old South to Europe and elsewhere survive as long as they do. Various political ideologies and religions with axes to grind. The Bolsheviks preserved Czarist-era buildings. The Ottoman Turks preserved the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. Christians preserved (mostly) the Coliseum though it is said Christians were martyred there. There is precedent for appreciating architecture even if you don't agree with the sentiment behind those who built certain structures.
