  • The United States Postal Service uses a TON of codes and abbreviations to make addresses shorter and easier to handle.
One of those alphanumeric codes is called eLOT, or Enhanced Line of Travel.
This code outlines the most efficient route mail carriers can follow as they deliver their parcels.
When you run an address through Smarty's address validation API you'll get eLOT information. Let's take a look at some examples.
When we run the address for Smarty's headquarters,
the API delivers an eLOT sequence and the eLOT sort.
The eLOT sequence is a four-digit number that indicates the order in which the mail carrier can deliver the items to the address compared to those nearby.
For example, the sequence number for the next address on the carrier route would likely be 0101.
The eLOT sort field shows how the mailing was sorted, be that ascending or descending.
    Let's check another address.
Here, you can see that this is the 23rd address on this route and that it’s been sorted in ascending order.
Sorting deliverables using eLOT helps the USPS save time and money by optimizing delivery routes.
Businesses that pre-sort their bulk mailings using the eLOT system can qualify for tasty bulk mail discounts.
And that's how the USPS and businesses use eLOT information.
