    Oh my god, those meends are so awesome! and those low - and otherwise unobtainable -low pitches touch so deep. When you occasionally drop to the bottom I’m thinking: whooaaaaa! This gigantic instrument seems by some miracle to have excellent intonation. (But then maybe you have to turn the screws one entire time around to move the pitch up and down one cent, though? Just kidding!) The tone is just out-of-this world gorgeous and I love how serene your playing is. I hope you will record more.

    Deep meditative Raag Jog. Rare to find a westerner playing dhrupad with such maturity. Surbahar is meant for dhrupad and you handled it excellently. Who is your guru?

    It is impossible to find one of these huge surbahars. In the mid sixties Rikhi Ram developed what is hot the standard size and the manufacturing of the large ones seems to hav ceased.. I've been looking for a couple of years. Any of this size would have been made in the 50s or earlier. I know that Pt Mukherjee has one but I haven't found a video of him playing itt.

      This one was custom made by Radha Krishna Sharma in 1980. I read there was a large one in the family of Ustad Imrat Khan, but it was still smaller than this. This size I wouldn´t recommend to any person who is not very tall.

    Beautiful tonal quality, sustained long meend notes, and more than well-played Jog. Who is the artist performing here? He looks Western European. Unusually long stem and large size of this instrument. Worth producing copies of it. But where did the large gourd come from, or is this a wooden box acting in place of a natural gourd?

  • @hamzafan
    @hamzafan 5 місяців тому

    KG, your music is an inspiration! The size of a surbahar is limited to only two factors: the size of available gourds, and the size of available wood for the tabli. So, I am curious, how wide IS the tabli? and, what is the length of the scale? Many thanks!

    • @shardamusicstudio2596
      @shardamusicstudio2596  5 місяців тому

      @@shardamusicstudio2596 Amazing. And the gourd is apparently wider. One imagines good-quality wood of this width is nearly impossible to find. It must take great hand and finger strength to play this instrument!
