It could be used as a place name for a group of people (men and women-like Johns and Janes for John and Jane Doe). Or it could be that a group of multiple Johns and Marias are coming to a party, so you're referring to all of them as a group. I may be wrong, but I'm an ESL teacher so hopefully this helps :)
