It was definitely enjoyable while it ran, and it did show promise for its future, but it ended too soon to truly be good. (In large part because the network was actively trying to kill it for some reason, as was revealed later on.) The second season ends up feeling a bit, ahem, rushed as a result, and its ending isn't nearly as satisfying as it was meant to be (in large part because it had to wrap up plotlines that were expected to need _at least_ another season, in a way that feels definitive-ish but also leaves the possibility of continuing later on open). This movie was the BEST of its kind for its time. I also now appreciate what an incredible job Jaye Davidson (Ra) did. One thing that I didn't fully get when I saw this as a teenager was how Daniel could just give up his life on Earth to live in a primitive society with a girl he just met. Now as an adult it's not so hard to see how he chose to live a simple life on an alien world with someone who had mutual feelings for him.
It definitely helped that his life on Earth was marred by being viewed as a failure for his crazy theories about aliens. So, the "life" he was giving up was as a failure & a laughingstock of a scientist and archaeologist, with no future outside of _maybe_ being on call for the military. Compare that to living with people that actually respect him, and can benefit from his knowledge, and it makes a lot of sense. (Especially if we factor in that after Abydos, he _knows_ that his alien theories are true... but he can't prove it. So, if he came back to Earth, he'd be constantly surrounded by people who don't know what he knows and would think he was crazy if he told them about it, and would have to live a lie for the rest of his life.)
