  • My videographer Chris and I decided to test both the XF10-24mm F/4 R OIS WR and XF50mm F/1.0 R WR out in the field. At the end of the day we decided to do a talking head (and feet) test with the XF50mm F/1.0. We had no idea how it would turn out but thought it would be fun to test. The only thing I would change is to select AF Range Limiter to the distance we were at so it would have stayed on us without focusing to the background or foreground. Instead I decided to use Face-Eye Tracking, which was a mistake for this particular set-up. The camera dos not allow you to use both these features at once. This is something that I would like Fujifilm to fix in a firmware update.
    Below is a breakdown of our gear, our settings and post 'editing' work. Basically all I did was add titles and a single image insert. Other than that, I did not touch the video itself to correct for white balance, exposure or even the audio.
    Fujifilm X-T4
    Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0 R WR
    Polar Pro 77mm Variable ND Filter
    Comica BoomX-U wireless audio system
    SwitchPod Tripod
    Blinking front tally light to let us know the camera is still recording
    Set Exposure and White Balance:
    -4K 24FPS 200Mbps
    -1/48th sec f/1.0 @ ISO 160
    -ProNeg Std film simulation H-1 S-2 DR 100% custom WB
    -Autofocus to Area, tracking sensitivity +2 and AF speed 0, Face Detection On (AF Range Limiter automatically Off when Face-Eye detect On)
    *No adjustment to exposure, white balance or audio levels. Left audio channel Take and right audio channel Chris
    -Titles and photo insert via iMovie and exported to ProRes quality. Original file size 9.31GB. After export to ProRes 22.3GB (44min upload to UA-cam)
    Thanks for watching. I'll continue testing this lens and ChrisMeetsChris will use it to create some cinematic sequences soon. Don't forget to follow his accounts as well:

    Yes remove the clutch system, add weather sealing and faster focus motors in version 2 of the older f1.2/1.4 primes.

      Thanks. Maybe we can make this a bi-monthly feature video? Talking head + feet with BHT and CMC? I was thinking the same. Unscripted random talking about nothing...

    I didn't like the focus clutch on the xf16mm 1.4, you still gotta flip the switch on the camera... I mean, I rarely use manual focus, so it doesn't matter much!

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 роки тому +2

      Agreed. My guess is that design is outdated and we won’t see it again. Just turning the focus ring while in AF mode is a quicker implementation of manual focus override since the clutch focus system was still focus-by-wire. Thanks for your thoughts!

    its NOT not straight, its ARTISTIC :D
    oh yes, great to hear other people talking about the H2 being a cinema "brick" like the red. just find the discussion interesting between the same DSLR style body and continue the hybrid photo/video or more cinema video camera bodies.
    one question would be if they can fit a global shutter or is that over kill to expect? Only mention this because regardless of resolution or any other specification for marketing, just the one global shutter could push the camera up and above the competition?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 роки тому +1

      Fujifilm has been working on a global shutter with Panasonic since the early 2010s but has not been as successful as they thought. I think it’s a race to see who can make one. My bet is Sony, but no it’s not too much to expect. Since partnering with Panasonic years ago on developing sensor technology Fujifilm sold their own sensor factory and has since depended on Sony for all their sensors. Hopefully Fujifilm can get back into the sensor hardware production game and attempt a global shutter for the X-Series and more importantly their medium format cameras.

    Stepping down one click to f 1.2 you already get more booked from the 56f 1.2 at half the weight and ⅓ less money. If this one can't focus super good like a Sony it hardly seems worth it. We were considering this one if it could video autofocus like the kit 18-55 but not so far. Maybe with firmware updates.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 роки тому +1

      this was an uncontrolled test with a difficult scenario. If we were going to use it properly we would have set the AF Range Limiter so it wouldn't focus on the background or foreground. But we put it on complete auto and just left it. The AF is going to be better than the XF 56mm f/1.2 R, but these lenses aren't really video lenses. However, you can use for video, but not on auto. Most videographers will manually focus, but with f/1.0 I think using the AF Range Limiter feature works best. As for value, yes you're correct the XF 56mm f/1.2 R is the bang-for-buck lens for Fujifilm. I have yet to test the Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4 so I can't say if that is good or not, but I'm hopeful.

    Sorry, trying to figure out what is going on here. Are you saying this setup, as is, would work for an interview scenario? I don’t know that I would use auto focus. Seemed to be hunting. The depth of field looks strange to me. I’d prefer the 10-24 at 16mm or shoulders and above or close together at a table using this lens. Just not a fan of bokeh on subjects that only take up 1/3 of the field of view. Am I missing something? Love your work!

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 роки тому +1

      Hi there, when we talked about using this lens to do interviews, we weren't talking about what Chris and I were doing. We were 20ft away from the lens and just testing the autofocus. Since Chris is a videographer, he was just thinking about how he would use it, and he considered tight crop interviews in low light as well as blurring out the background to reduce visual distractions, including getting other people in the frame by accident. It will make more sense when he finishes his vlog and talks more about it :-) As for AF for video, yes Chris in general will manual focus, but at f/1.0 it is nice to have reliable autofocus when behind the camera. I think with some tweaking this lens could be used for autofocus.

      @@bigheadtaco appreciate your work as always, thank you for the clarification. At this price point I think I’ll stick with my 56 f1.2

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 роки тому +1

      @@JPWineberg the XF 56mm f/1.2 is for 90% of us. I believe the f/1.0 is more about low light photography and not ultimate bokeh. There isn't a huge visual difference that I could see.

    Stupid question, so apologies for that, but how did you guys record this so that I can't hear the AF motor on the 50mm f/1? Clearly I have zero experience with video, but since I've got X-T4 I would like to give it a go. I would appreciate any tips.
