Larissa | The primeval beauty of the Thessalian plain from above
The city of Larissa is said to be one of the few modern Greek cities which has been inhabited since prehistoric times, being in the same place and having the same name. Its name, according to the most official version, comes from the Pelasgian word "Laas" which means "rock". There are two other versions, the first states that the nymph Larissa drowned in the waters of Pinios and that is how the city got its name, while the second states that it was built by Larisos, son of Pelasgos, in prehistoric times. The only thing that is certain is that the origin of the city is inextricably linked with the history of the Pelasgians, which is why it was the capital of the state of Pelasgiotida.
Larissa has a continuous historical path, which starts from mythology and naturally reaches the present day. In ancient Greece it was known as the Common of Thessaly, an alliance with the leading city-state of Larissa. In the Roman Era it was the center of the region and in the Byzantine Period it also played a very important role.
In later years, the city of Larissa will become a purely Ottoman city and will be called "Yeni Sehir", which means "New City" in Turkish. In the 17th and 18th centuries the region and the city experienced an economic boom. The great teacher of the Genus, Konstantinos Koumas, to whom a street in the city is dedicated, teaches Greek and mathematics at the Greek school of Larissa.
The period of the Revolution reserved a strange role for the city. As a pre-eminent Ottoman city in Greek territory, it will be the most important military center and supply base for the Turkish troops who want to suppress the revolution in Roumeli and the Morea.
Its geographical position favors this role, since the Turkish forces can campaign towards Epirus and Western Macedonia as well as towards the south, as we mentioned. Despite all this, in the Revolution and throughout the 19th century, a revolutionary movement against the Turks will develop which will succeed with the Revolution of 1778. Although the revolution failed, three years later Larissa, like the whole of Thessaly , except for the area of ​​Elassona, will be part of the Greek territory.
The struggles of the collectives and farmers against the landowners will mark the economic and social history of Greece in a period where there is no labor movement. The culmination of all these struggles was the uprising in Killeler in 1910, where local farmers who wanted to participate in a rally in Larissa lost their lives.
The city will follow after the First World War the changes happening in the Greek territory and after the Second World War it will lose a large part of its population migrating to Athens, Thessaloniki and abroad. Since the 1980s, Larissa has been developing economically, socially and demographically.
Today the city of Larissa is home to 200,000 inhabitants and is the administrative and financial capital of all of Thessaly, a modern city that tries to follow, and succeeds in, modern rhythms. The city is not only dependent on farmers and sideline occupations related to agricultural production, but has developed industry and craft.
