Thank you so much for reacting to this! It’s literally used in film classes as a prime example of pacing, setup, and payoff done right. The perfect beginning to a perfect trilogy, in my opinion. If you loved this one, you’ll love the other two. Thanks and enjoy!

    • @ghyslainabel
      @ghyslainabel Рік тому +17

The trilogy is really good, yes, but I would not say perfect.
      - Some setups are forced, in the "as you know" style.
      - The chicken/yellow insult is introduced randomly in the second movie.
      - There are some overacting that would be more suitable for a stage than a movie.
      - Some running gags, especially in the third movie, are there because they are running gags, to the detriment of the story.
These movies have flaws, but they deserve to be watched and rewatched.

When I was taking writing classes in college, they told us the best stories do four things: 1) Introduce and make you care about your characters, 2) Get your characters trapped in a tree, 3) Throw rocks at them while they're in the tree, 4) Successfully get them out of the tree (without any contrivance). Rei was little more than a bastardised shadow of her former self, same as disneys version of Ben was a shrivelled up nothing burger compared to his original form
JACEN AND JAINA SOLO, twins born to Han and Leia 9ABY, elder siblings to the younger child anakin solo who sadly died at 16, jacen later fall in to the dark side and becoming DARTH CAEDUS…not “kylo ren”
Secondly, BEN was never a child of Han and Leia, but their NEPHEW…BEN SKYWALKER, son of Luke and Mara…

This set the two of them up to kiss for the first time on the dance floor and that set her up to spend the rest of her _life_ with him.
But subsequently, he stole her heart by _blooming_ as the knight in shining armor that came to her _rescue_ in her time of _need._ _This_ set the two of them up to kiss for the first time on the dance floor that set her up to spend the rest of her life with him.

There's all kinds of fascinating lore about this movie, so I'll only mention a few. The time machine in the original script was a modified refrigerator, changed because it would have been a very stationary prop and Steven Spielberg didn't want kids locking themselves in fridges. They also would have driven into the blast of a nuclear bomb to fuel the flux capacitor; this was changed because of special effects production costs, and the clock tower lightning strike was much easier and cheaper to film. In one draft of the script, a more generic time machine and the refrigerator were used. However, the time machine required a special ingredient to work: Coca-Cola. Yeah, the soda. In the finale, Marty sneaks into a nuclear testing site, complete with detailed suburban houses. As the countdown starts, he drops the bottle of Coke, and it shatters on the floor. He panics at first, until he realizes that like any American home in that era, the fridge is stocked with another bottle of Coke. It's also lead-lined, so hiding in there lets him survive the blast. This conveniently gives Marty everything he needs to go back to the future. Funnily enough, a similar scenario plays out decades later in Speilberg's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

There's a subplot that's important, and it's obvious once you know it, but they don't ever make it explicit: George is left-handed. In some pockets of culture, even as recently as the 80s, there have been people who think that being left-handed is evil, and they will force left-handed kids to use their right hands, usually leading to problems (mental, physical, and practical) later in life. In the first timeline that we see, before Marty goes back, George is still living as if he were right-handed, and as such is still just as awkward and inept as when he was a kid. In the timeline that got created because of Marty's intervention, one of the most important events was when George's right hand was disabled by Biff, forcing him to use a left hook. After the punch, George is staring at his left hand in amazement. He's not just astonished that he decked Biff, he's suddenly realizing how good it felt to use his left hand like that. The new confident George we see in the new timeline, after Marty gets back, is a proud lefty.

It is so nice to see young people enjoying the same movies I watched when I was their age.

My favorite "let's mess with time" movie is probably Groundhog Day but BTTF is right beside it. I don't really need any of the sequels, I find this to be a great stand-alone, but it's your call. Thanks, Nat, and have a golden 2023.

One of the cord connectors from the lightning storm scene: that giant plug thing. We built a nice display box, with a custom plaque describing what it was. The customer was a collector, brought in some other interesting film props- some originals, some replicas.

But due to being such a hit, Universal approached Zemeckis and Gale to do a sequel, and they decided to do two, and wrap them up as a trilogy. Due to them having the rights to the BTTF story, they have both sworn that there wouldn't be any reboot for as long as they live. I miss the 1980s (I first saw this movie at age 29, when it was new, in a movie theater.) and had seen Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in TV sitcoms (Fox in "Family Ties" as a conservative Republican youth living with his sisters and liberal, former hippie parents) and Lloyd, a few years earlier, in "Taxi," where (in 1983 he still had dark hair) he played one of the cabbies; his character was an eccentric a bit like Doc. I'd also seen Lloyd as the villain in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" another 80s movie well worth reviewing, about cartoon characters ("toons") living among humans in a section of LA. Amazing that Lloyd, who's done a slew of other movies, is still active in his 80s. Fox, who married the woman who played his first "Family Ties" girlfriend, is in his early 60s and an advocate for research to cure Parkinson's Disease, whose symptoms first beset him in the 80s and early 90s about the time the BTF sequels were made. In my opinion this movie needed no sequels, but it generated such a clamor for more (not to mention financial profit) that the producers had to give in. No doubt you've seen the history of BTF including how Fox, the movie makers' first choice, eventually was cast to replace another actor, Eric Stoltz, who in their opinion was wrong for the part of Marty; by then the "Family Ties" producers had agreed to let Fox do the film as well as the TV show (which stretched his schedule, deprived him of a lot of sleep, and sometimes made him call his TV dad "Doc" by mistake, according to articles I've read.) Thanks for the nostalgia. (I was born in 1956 and vaguely remember those old cars and storefronts, etc., from my early childhood. Now it's time for me to "make like a tree and LEAVE" (to correctly quote the phrase that the 1955 BIff screws up.)

This Marty is from the happier timeline with happy parents. What the heck happens to him when he runs away from the Libyans? He’s not the marty we see in 1955 in BttF2. For all we know, he just disappears in time, never to be seen again, replaced by original Marty.

    Hi Natalie!
What makes this movie timeless 😉for me, it's not so much about tec stuff but about family and friendship. And it's full of little details and easter eggs! For example: one of the many clocks in Doc's garage is in the shape of a clock tower with a little man hanging on it, just like Doc later in the movie. This is a hommage to the silent movie "Safety last!" from 1923 with Harold Lloyd. And Christopher Lloyd is the name of the actor who played Doc Brown. 🤯
The name of the mall changed into "Lone Pine Mall" because Marty drove over a pine when escaping the Peabody farm.
The homeless guy in 1985 is the mayor in 1955.
    And so on.... 😉
    And for the easter eggs:
In the beginning, you see a newspaper article about "Brown mansion destroyed" or something like that, and Doc mentioned he spent all the wealth of his family for realizing his vision. So, yes, in the 50s, he was a wealthy man. Just look at his car he loaned Marty to drive Lorraine to the dance ;-)
Eddie van Halen (RIP) played a guitar solo exclusively for the scene Marty pretends to be "Darth Vader", and if I remember correctly, just for the fun.
The guy at the audition who says that Martys band ist just too loud is Huey Lewis, who performed "Power of love" and "Back in time" for the soundtrack.
Marty's performance on stage is a mix of Eddie van Halen (Van Halen), Angus Young (AC/DC) and Jimi Hendrix, in my opinion ;-)
The final scene was intendet as a last joke, but as the movie became such a HUGE success and fans demanded a sequel, the team has to do it. So, have fun with part 2 and 3! 😁

Thomas F. Wilson (Biff) is a cool guy in real life. He does stand-up comedy where he talks about his time on the _BTTF_ sets.
At first, Tom had a really difficult time playing Biff because *he* was bullied as a child. Tom actually hates bullies. During the almost-rape scene, he was being too gentle with Lea Thompson (Lorraine). Lea had to take him aside and almost yell at him to be rougher with her or else he wouldn't sell the scene. Whatever she said, it worked.
Back in 2015, there was a big revival of _BTTF_ centered around the time Doc, Marty and Jennifer traveled to in the second movie. They brought back all 3 films in the theaters, and many of them would show the entire trilogy back-to-back-to-back. What a butt-number (as in your butt would get numb from being stationary for that long) that must have been.
