93 + 7 mnths and I'm replacing all steering parts on my 64 beetle. This video will give me confidence. Thanks. Just an aside: The part that gave me trouble was disconnecting the damper on psgr. side. No one commented on the lock clip. !,
Great I was also looking for a video on this topic..thank you that you decided to make this video very helpful, I bought my coupler like 6 months a go, not knowing how to do it, i though I had to take the gas tank out..but now I know thank you bro good job.!
I just replaced my rag joint today and noted I have three bolts patinaed and one that was silver just you have. I wonder if was because it maintained the electrical connection for the horn!?
After I parked my 1970 VW double cab I found the steering coupling just fell to the ground so I was able to get 2 steering couplings one package labeled German nothing stamped on the coupling itself and the other coupling I got was made in India no engraving on the coupling just on the package. Your video was very helpful thank you the video only shows it for Beatles, it should be the same. So I ordered new hardware from England, so I have a spare made in India. So after I put the lock tight on how tight do I want? Just snug or just a little more than that? Thank you so much, Shaggy
Chris, I have a 68 as well. Did you have horn issues while turning prior to replacing the bushing? Such as the horn goes off when turning left or right? Thanks.
@@chrisfreemesser Yeah, I thought that as well and installed a new wire to the bushing and a new bearing with the soldered wire. Still shorts when turning. I'm pulling the column later this winter anway so I'll get it sorted out by then; so your video will be helpful. Thanks.
My 66 beetle had a i think a polyurethane, it was red. Went to turn the steering wheel eariler today and the wheel felt like it broke loose. Turns out it shattered like glass. So i believe when you say it crumbles in your hand and not to use them
Thank you for taking the time to make the video. I noticed you did not use any washers. Did you need to? I am staying away from polyeurothane. They are trash and don't last. Thanks again.
Do not use loctite unless you have a good reason to do so. A properly torqued nut is not going to back off. Loctite is just going to cause a problem for the next guy.
Good video, you are right, I never found a DIY video for replacement of the steering coupler. Very informational. Just a quick question, where did you buy the rubber coupler from?
The Bentley manual says 14-18 ft-lbs for the bolts from the steering box and 11 ft-lbs for the steering column side but those numbers may not be applicable if nylon lock nuts are used. Decently tight worked fine for me 😉
Nice write up. I’m ditching my cheap coupler for febi brand too.
Thank you for doing this video I had a hard time finding this exact subject being covered as well as where the horn wire is connected to the disc.
Excellent video...will be of great help...thanks for posting.

Thank you. Very useful information.
Good I found this video. Just got mine steering coupler from wolfsburgwest. The original is pretty cracked. Thank you!
Great job on the video. I was trying find information on the STEERING COUPLER GROUND TAB as mine was missing on my 63. Your video nailed it for me 👍👍

I did not. The wire runs all the way up to the horn button, my best guess is that it's shorting against the steering column when you turn

I certainly did use washers, same ones in the same location as the original coupler

It was either CIP1 or Wolfsburg West...bought it well over a year ago so I don't remember for sure
@@chrisfreemesser Thanks for the reply.
That was helpful I haven’t checked the coupler on my ‘65 but will now
@@jimmd53 Getting ready to do mine and have the exact same coupler, it's from Wolfsburg West.
What is the torque on those bolts?
