  • “The problem is that we’re never content with just being special.” - Lama Marut
In this speakeasy talk from Wanderlust Squaw Valley 2014, Lama Marut confronts the ego and explores what it means to find spiritual fulfillment within yourself.
From a young age, children are taught that they are special. As they grow, they learn that being special is its own unique currency. The desire to become more special than others grows stronger as we age, and soon is all encompassing. As a practicing Buddhist monk and former professor whose studies focused on comparative religion, Lama Marut was all too familiar with this phenomenon. He describes it as a culture of narcissism.
This constant dissatisfaction with the world is unhealthy. It leads to an imbalance in the self. While competition and the drive for success can be executed in a balanced way, the constant reminders of our shortcomings via the media, television, books, and social platforms can be wearing. In this talk, Lama Marut describes techniques to find peace in the chaos and fulfillment in our lives. To be truly present is to be at one with the self.
“It is in those moments that we are nobody, that we are most happy with life.” - Lama Marut

Lama Marut was one of my first highly influential Buddhist teachers. His teachings on emptiness shook the ground under my feet back then. I embraced the Buddhist path and never looked back. It made me who I am today. I am eternally grateful to Lama. I miss him. OM it’s like that now 🙏💙
