Sing It Live: BEHIND THE SOUND [Love Shack - The B52's]

  • A usual Sing It Live recording session doesn't typically include a lot of huggin' and a-kissin', but recording songs like this definitely make it hot as an oven!! See what I did there... Mr Sing It Live himself Darren Mullan and I have a nice chat about why he chose 'Love Shack', what went on during the day of the recording and what can happen if you assume the scenario of how it’ll be recorded. Or should I say, who!

I was playing bass in a "party" band a few years ago (my first real band) and we were preparing for our first gig (a fundraiser for a Jewish community center) and we added this song. Now, I'm a classic rock guy. I was familiar with the song, but I had no idea it was the B-52's. Once I learned the bass line and we ran through the song the first time, I was hooked. We had two female singers and our drummer came out from behind the kit to do the lead singing. He had the voice and the theatrics. When we played it at the gig, it was a huge hit. There were already plenty of people dancing but I think that song emptied all the chairs.
When I saw the Sing It Live video the other day it took me back. This song is just so much fun to do.
That band I was in broke up a few months later and I haven't been in another band, let alone played bass since then. But the memories of playing Love Shack and a few of our other songs is something I will never forget.
I loved watching this video and hearing about what went into doing the song and I found myself relating to so much of it, it was great. Love Shack, baby!

In my younger years I used to do a lot of filling in and session work. There was a lot of stuff I Didn’t like to play as I was the youngest nipper and my tastes were very much different. However, I believe that I was very lucky as I got to play with some of the best musicians I have the pleasure of knowing and they taught me a lot. So crap songs be damned, I learned so much. Did the small venue thing for some years as well as some big ones. Unfortunately life kicked in and I had to hang up my axe for a while as music for me, while it puts me in my happy place, didn’t pay the bills.
I did practice most days but didn’t play on stage for 20+ years until last year I got going with a band again. Unfortunately it wasn’t working so I am now looking for another gig. The nice thing about AZ is that you are spoiled for choice. I have done a little session work as well. Loving my new found playing again.

"Musical ho's" LOL! But you guys did it so well. Love Shack might not have been my favorite back then but it never irked me as much as when we'd get requests for the Electric Slide or the Macarena. Yep, we were musical ho's too and did it for the money! Crafty - where did you get those GLASSES! Way cool.

Now, the view from the veranda might be very nice, but if I was at Darren's house I would never leave the basement! Great video Crafty and a great performance from yourself. My dogs are going mad barking at Harley whenever he wanders in shot. My song for outside (or inside) as Darren knows has always been "Alive and Kicking" by Simple Minds. One of these days he'll cave and record it...

Really interesting to hear about the song and how it played out originally in Australia - that radio stations would not play it! It was huge in the states, and it was probably one of the biggest hits of the B'52s which was followed by Roam, their second biggest hit ever on the same album. That album in particular was a strong one for them being produced by Dan Was and Nile Rogers, each doing about half of the album. Roam was produced by Nile Rogers. Love Shack by Don Was. Thanks for recording this discussion it is really interesting. Figuring out the quick rhythm of the guitar that quickly is really impressive! Roam would be another B52s song people would love.

Ok, off the top - absolutely lovely scenery... as for potential tunes - how about Heart's "Love Alive" for Darren's front porch? Those harmonies!!! I'd love to hear that. Also, something a little more "jazzy," there's Sade's "Your Love is King." My not to neighbor friendly request would be Frankie Valli's "Who Loves You?" That's one I'd be grateful to hear even from Darren's "love shack, " aka the basement. Always thankful for the BTS, Crafty! Waiting patiently to see what you decide to do! 🇵🇷 🙏

Fantastic discussion. But when Darren says ''we do stuff and we play music we weren't always 100% aligned with because the crowd want it'' it reminded me straight away of this very funny sketch from British comedy show Big Train in 2002 (clip is short, less than 2 minutes)

You could probably record on your balcony using an e-kit for drums and everything else straight to the mixing board. I see more and more videos where everything almost quiet on stage is a new trend. Being a drummer who has played an e-kit, it isn't the same thing but maybe newer kits have more of the nuances of an acoustic kit.
