PSA: Elixir Guitar Strings SCAM ALERT
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 січ 2024
- So recently I had the misfortune of being the victim of an online scam. A late night online shopping spree and an attractive discount on a bulk purchase of guitar strings lured me in. I was unaware (at the time) that the guitar strings that I had just purchased would turn out to be FAKES! With the help of Shane Bailey at bMusic (my local music store), we'll show you what to look out for.

Thanks for watching!

Thanks, Crafty. USA Subscriber here to you & Singit. This got my attention bec. I was in Japan & found 9-46 Elixirs. My style is to bend the upper strings, but I like that deeper bass and that combo is hard to find. Anyway, I did buy them in a store and I just checked, they're legit. I did just put a set on and one string broke at the ball, which never happened before, but my tech said it can. But thanks. And another note, please do not call yourself a jack of all trades and a master of none, I'm serious. You're really multi-faceted and and truly accomplished in everything you do. And wouldn't call Singit Live a cover band any more than the Metropolitan Opera is "covering" Aida. I mean, you're virtuosos in your own right.
DUDE!!! I was about to switch brands because my most recent set I bought, just an individual set too!- was very different in every way from what I have been used to! I thought they just went downhill or outsourced or whatever- you know many manufacturers do this type of shit but man this sucks! I dont have the package anymore and I definitely dont have access to a music store within two hundred miles so online is really my only option. Wow, this is an important vid, thank you very much!!
I keep telling people this, but they don't listen.
Ask the stores / sellers who their distributor is. There's only on importer in Australia as far as I'm aware: National Music.
Then they bring them in for a set up and want me to use them.
They give you all sorts of tonality and intonation problems, and often are rusted straight out of the pack. Sometimes not even coated.
I tell them the cost price of Elixirs (we make, like 10% margin if that), and if you find them for less than that, obviously they'd be fakes.
Try D'Addario XS coated acoustic strings.. I think they last longer than Elixers😄
Thanks Crafty! I always buy Elixir Strings for my guitars. I would have never caught that if you had not said anything. I usually buy mine at Guitar Center but sometimes I get them online on Amazon. Like anyone else I would have been lured to buying the ones with the best price. I will pay more attention in the future. Love your Channel.
sadly true, so much fake about, you soon realise with the elixir fakes, no tone and no feel.
eBay for example, doesn't give a stuff. I've seen elixirs for $10. Sounds too good to be true, as elixirs are usually over $20.
Yep I got stung as well, The individual packets the strings are in if you look you can tell the black colour is different. The fakes are more black grey. I'm the same now, no more online shopping for strings on ebay plus I contacted ebay and I got the company that sold me the strings taken down, not that it will stop them.
I suspect a lot of the Ernie Ball string packs sold online are fake. Unfortunately Ernie Ball don't make it easy to tell fake from genuine by looking at the packaging.
But the fact there's so much counterfeit stuff is really just a reaction to these companies overcharging for their products. For example a Shure SM-58 obviously can't possibly cost $200 to manufacture when you have other legitimate budget brands like Superlux selling an equivalent microphone for $40.
Just checked, and I have an identical pack of Elixir strings, and thankfully, they do appear to be legitimate! I rarely buy music gear online, and make a point of visiting music shops (most often, Music Bros in Shrewsbury). Often I don't really need much equipment, but they also sell T-shirts, so I can usually come from there with a purchase of some sort.
Thanks very much.
Will check those that I have.
In a Caribbean island and have one store selling elixirs so buying online when you travel overseas is almost a requirement.
I buy on Amazon but they use different retailers so will check.
Best wishes.
My wife uses Elixir strings... we've tried cheaper strings, but they don't last. She has expensive tastes!
I'd have thought you'd be sponsored and have more strings that you'd know what to do with now...
I'm a dinosaur. I still walk into stores, and on the rare occasions I really need something online, I give money to a family member who places the order. I guess I could still get ripped off in that way, though.
Ohhhh you! You’re great man!
What marketplace site is reputable? Maybe some place like reverb when you buy from a store, but not an amazon or the like
Awesome video man
Elixir are freaking lovely. I put on my acoustic my electric my bass even my bagepipes. lol. No shit. They are amazing
I loved your fial coment really resonating with me at this time.
