Hello Truenas UA-camr Influencer, long time friend, constant partner, how are you? :D I have a Proxmox Server and a Truenas Server. I created an ISCSI disk on the Truenas and configured access on the Proxmox. I made a virtual machine, installed any operating system. 1) Now, how do I backup, restore next time this ISCSI? Some errors happen, until you can make a backup, but restoring is difficult. 2) In truenas, this ISCSI does not appear, the best I can do is allocate it in the dataset and I have an empty folder, without images or directories, but I found /dev/zd0 in another location, if I'm not mistaken. Now I would like to clone it. How can I clone or duplicate this ISCSI? @raid owl thanks for video!
Very interesting video! If I recall correctly, there's one big difference between SMB and iSCSI and that is that SMB does asynchronous writing whereas iSCSI does synchronous writing, meaning that iSCSI will actually wait until all data is flushed to the disks. This is where a LOG VDEV comes into play: using an SSD LOG VDEV speeds up synchronous writes by caching data on the SSD before flushing it to spinning rust.
Grate video, but... Everyone show how to create the target and stuff. But how do you remove the iSCSI target on TrueNAS Core? Do you just remove the Zvol?
Nice! This gives me an idea, and perhaps a video idea for you. Use iSCSI as an off-site backup for Windows clients? Considering that it shows up as a local drive, technically, one can use any of the free backup software out there and back up their files. Just a thought and IMO would make for a great video. I use Scale and love it.
That's was literally the first thing I was thinking about when I saw the video showing up; how about using iscsi for remote storage on offsite nas/backup-server in combination with wireguard/ovpn
I use Macrium with Image Guardian, which works with iSCSI mounted drives. There is also a script somewhere, which automatically mounts and unmounts the drive.
That would be a terrible way to manage more than a few clients. iSCSI drives can be accessed by a one machine at a time (on a standard implementation), so you would have to manually configure times, auto connects/disconnects etc. Or you would have to set up different volumes for different client, which is a colossal waste of space. Only feasible use for iSCSI would be if the backup software worked as a sever-client, where server would be connected to an iSCSI volume and it would be the only one using it, while clients would send data through the server. But then again, no free software works like that. And if you can connect to the offsite using iSCSI, you can also connect using SMB/NFS. Remember that iSCSI volume is a block device, so if your connection is not stable and disconnect often, then it's similar to pulling out the SATA cable from the drive when it's working. Say hello to volume scan after reconnecting. Another big minus is that you don't have the direct access to the files from the NAS, since NAS OS sees it as a block device. You would have to mount the volume internally to be able to access the files. SMB is much more suitable for free backup software, as it allows you to use your backup folders concurrently on many devices and files can be directly accessed from the NAS. There is a reason why iSCSI is being phased out and use under very specific conditions only.
Thank you, I am currently trying to just create a Launch-able videogame archive. I have a private network set up across a switch separate from ground connected by air, so with that i decided to create a mapped network for rom loading to batocera and other machines with SMB, however i wasnt really happy with it, so i expanded to a 25tb nas and bagan a effort to archive a massive content library for the hell of it, plus im a youtuber who plays games, having whatever i want at my fingertips cause of a nas is kinda wild.
great instructions. Question: will Jellyfin and Plex work on the special drive in the truenas pool? My pool is now divided in half, 1) for iscsi and 2) truenas pool. Do I need to delete the iscsi for plex? by the way, connecting by way of map, I get about 300+ MB/s on a file copy. The iscsi gets about 600 MB/s. I am on a dual NIC for both computers and one direct connect via fiber, the other is RJ45 for the internet
Is there any way to share an external USB drive attached to my TrueNAS machine as an iSCSI device directly to another machine? I.e. without going through a ZVOL. The reason I'd like to do this is to use Carbon Copy Cloner to continuously update a backup boot drive for my Macbook without having to remember to plug the drive in all the time.
I would not use zvol, it tends to degrade the performance of the pool and it will stay that way after a while after you delete it, it is best to use a file
Nice! I wonder how well it works for a Steam Library. Obviously everyones setup is different but its is playable? I'll have ot find out. both my nas and my gaming pc are on the 2.5G network
Oh yeah at 2.5G it’ll be very playable. Even at 1G you’re good considering that’s still 100MBps. I remember when my steam library was installed to slow 50 MBps HDDs lol.
Had a bad experience with iSCSI once. Can't remember how, but lost 500Mb of scanned docs inside and couldn't get reconnected. Couldn't access from another machine or the NAS...just lost. Never used iSCSI since.
@@RaidOwl At the end of the day, was my fault...didn't have a decent recovery plan. Just got it working and then dived into the tech with some stuff I should have been more protective off
Niiiice!
Great work as always! New studio is looking great too.

Very simple and helpful tutorial, sir! You helped me setup my TrueNAS!
This was really helpful, I've not used iSCSI in years but I couldn't find a good Truenas video until this I can now share my nas on windows
Awesome! This is gonna help me setup shared storage for my mini pc cluster :D thanks
Great video! Needed this for my school project!
You do consistently good walkthroughs, thank you! 👍

Very good video, to the point, helpful, and not full of fluff. Thank you kindly.
Great video! Nicely explained. Now that I am back on widows, I might set this up and move some of my ssds out of my desktop.
Great video! Did you test 64KB blocks for windows at any point or just stick to 128KB?
Just stuck with 128 🤷🏻♂️

@@mandrael Good idea. But we should wait for Mr. Owl to do the video, hopefully soon because there is a lot of interest in this.

800th like and a new sub :) Thanks!
A little different on Scale, but I was able to figure it out with your video. Thanks!
How do you set up more then one portal? I just can't, I need to add another ip address but I can't
You are a top yop chap. Fab video.
Very easy guide. Thank you.

wohoo! my lucky day!

Found this, followed it, broke something else. . . found it again. Bar some annoyance with CHAP at this end, works perfectly.

thanks ! very useful !
iSCSI?! YouSCSI!
I hate this. Ima use it forever tho.
Or if you are Italian, eSCSI!

That’s unlucky. I’ve had only positive experiences with iSCSI but personal experiences count for more when it comes to tech haha
