I don't know who filmed the fruit and veg section, but as an American I have to correct that. We have enormous fruit and veg sections in our supermarkets! We also have farmers markets and road side stands. The film provided above had to take a lot of searching to find. I have never seen any produce section of any supermarket that is that weak and paltry in my entire life. Other than that, yes, I do love peanut butter, and no, we don't get enough vacation days in the US. When I was in school, we were told the metric system existed, but we weren't taught it. However, we were taught the Dewey decimal system which is now defunct. Looks like the drinking age can be attributed to the UK.

Fruit and Veg is usually the first large section of a grocery store and they're usually cheaper than processed foods. Farmers Markets and Farm Stands are big too. I suppose it's regional. Peanut Butter became very popular because of the protein. If you couldn't afford meat it was another cheaper way to give your kids protein.

A lot of things differ from state to state because the states have powers that the federal or national government can't take away from them. It stems from the fact that the states (the original 13) existed before the national government, and they created the national government. The Constitution that they wrote gives the national government certain powers, and then reserves anything not specifically granted to the federal government to the states. That's a big reason why in some cases the states have different rules, because in those areas they can decide for themselves.

    5. A local public school district (partially inside that special district of that city, and partially outside of the city and unincorporated) may vote to tax everything 0.1% to build a new middle school
    6. etc., etc.
You may drive into a new state that has no sales tax, but a local school district there passed a 0.01% levy to pay to install lights for night games at the High School football stadium. The next school district might have passed the same tax, for the same reason, but as a property tax, and no sales tax -- there are infinite scenarios.
When you buy something, all taxes relevant to each item purchased in the particular location is tallied up, resulting in the actual tax rate for each item at the time of the sale. And, any of those taxes can change anytime there's an election at any of those municipal levels with a vote involving sales tax(es)...
If you owned 3 gas stations on the same road, each 5 miles apart, you may have to charge a different tax rate at each one for gasoline, a different one for groceries/food at each, a different one for soda at each, and a different one for alcohol/tobacco at each. It gets complicated really quickly, but it's nice that the local residents can decide, by voting, what's important to them and what's not.
I think the confusion is a small price to pay for that level of control over the process. On the other hand, visitors don't see any of the benefit. They just get the confusion, and I get why it's annoying, but tough! Figure it out! 😁

There are a few very important reasons why the drinking age in America is higher than in other countries. First, it is a scientific fact that the human prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that can assess risk vs. reward, isn't fully developed until a human is 25 years old. Secondly, this is a big country, and because of that America is a culture of highways and driving, frequently long distances. In the United States in 2020 there were over 42,000 fatal car accidents, and the fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16-19 year-olds is nearly 3 times the rate for drivers ages 20 and over. Risk is highest at ages 16-17. The number of under 20's that cause accidents or have non-fatal but injurious accidents is even higher. Adding alcohol to the mix makes it even deadlier. The drinking age of 21 is not out of punishment, but of health, survival, and economic cost. However, the undeveloped prefrontal cortex aspect is perfect for sending 17-21 year olds to war, hence the enlistment age. Therefore the idea that "if you're old enough to go to war you're old enough to drink" doesn't hold water in American society.

So ur gonna say it’s okay for 17-20 year olds to risk their life and psychological health because politicians can’t agree and/or want to line their pockets but they can’t have a drink because of other irresponsible drivers. When drunk driving how long ur on the road for, many DUI accidents happen within the first 25 mins. of the drive.

More than half (many more) of all car accidents are caused by those under 21. So, which is more dangerous to 17-20 year olds, war or automobiles?

I know at my old job, I got a week after a year, and then I was allowed two after FIVE years, three after ten. Fifteen years, and you had to cash in on that last one. They didn’t allow you to take them back to back, you had to separate them throughout the year. I could barely travel even if I wanted to because we didn’t receive our schedules until - literally - the day before. It was hard to make plans if you didn’t even know if you’d GET your vacation. You’d more or less have to verbally fight them in order to be able to those vacations because the turnover rate was so high. They didn’t have enough dependable employees that those who HAD been with them for years were denied having the time off more often than not, and this resulted in burnout and eventually a mass walkout. If they treated their employees better, they would HAVE more employees that would stick around.

Knowing we had to separate them, we’d put in our vacation request forms at the beginning of the year (by that, I mean the anniversary date of when we were hired, which starts our “year” over) We’d try to space them out evenly - every 3 to 4 months or so - but if one was denied, it’d push all the others’ back as well. If we came up to the end of our “year” and a vacation hadn’t been used, we’d lose it because they didn’t roll over as other companies might do. We’d get paid for them at least. But for those of us long timers, we were denied our vacations more often than not the last few years. What we decided to do when we DID get our vacation denied is, we’d put in for the next week, and then the next and so on until we were finally approved. Then the pandemic hit. Remote wasn’t available for our job and a lot of people quit. The rest of us were averaging 60+ hours of work, lucky to get one day off each week. This is what exacerbated the burn out and the eventual loss of their best and most dependable employees. We’d gotten ONE $50 “hazard pay” towards the beginning of the pandemic and that was it. The longer the pandemic stretched out and soon we were receiving less than a penny a day for our work through it.

Here in the US vacation days go by job rank. Entry staff get 10 days in larger companies. Later on people get 15 or 20 with seniority. Senior corporate executives Vice President or higher usually get a calendar month, 22 days, 25 day or even 30. Some government employees get more and "roll over" the unused vacation and may have 100 paid days or more stored up at the time retirement and cash these in at age 65. So again this is misleading. You negotiate this at the time you are hired so you don't lose days off when you switch jobs- if you had 20 days at your former job and interview at a new company they'll match that 20 even if other people in that job have 15

Our kids in the US are able to drive at 15 and a license by 16-18 (when many own their first vehicle). Now this may not be a problem in smaller countries but in the US the roads traveled are very long and sometimes very busy. If your kid is 'buzzed' what little discretion they have can be lost. Kids can find work arounds to rules but not in as great a number as if you turn them all loose to drink at will. The MADD (mothers against drunk driving) movement kept everyone aware of why we need to keep the age limit. Teenage road accidents were once higher. Losing young teens by carloads has set restrictions to not allow young drivers to even have underage passengers in the car with them. The US is a automobile culture. We all have to have one vehicle, or two (maybe three or four!). We try to get our kids 'Road' savvy BEFORE the 'Drinking' skills. --I'm sure every country sets their standards by culture and even geography not just an archaic law. Protecting your young is not a exclusive US feature. No one should have to outlive their child if their society can help reduce the risks.

There's the expression, "they webmd'd themselves" when referring to patients who come go to their doctor claiming they have some crazy rare illness when it more often than not is something basic like a sinus infection. They have to take re-education courses every year to learn about new medical advances including new drugs, so they know much more than your average person, even when it comes to new drugs. After seeing patients like that everyday, it becomes incredibly annoying.

@@SomethingSeemsOff Also people are just genuinely fucking stupid, and lie to their doctors about shit to seem more manly or cool. Like cmon your doctor isn't gonna give a shit if you tell him you smoke marijuana, but he needs to know that if you're on certain meds.

College football is much older than the NFL, which is another reason why it's so popular. Many schools have rivalries that have been played for over 100 years, and ivy league universities have played every year for the last 136 years.

Tipping has become more annoying with covid and cashless payments, with many checkout screens now asking how much tip you want to leave. A 15% tip for buying a doughnut seems high, and today I was asked if I wanted to tip at the carwash where a machine does all the work.

The drinking age was raised because of lobbying groups like mothers against drunk driving, because young people were dying in car accidents when they were driving drunk.

consider this - many, many drug commercials don't even tell you what the drug's for but, on the other hand, liquor and cigarette commercials are prohibited.

Some people take advantage of different sales tax rates especially if they live near other state borders that have lower sales tax. For example: I live in North Carolina near the Virginia border, for big ticket items, it is worth a little trip to cross into Virginia for a lower sales tax. My county is 7% and the adjoining VA county is 5.3%.

Sales tax varies by county. I grew up in Southern Saratoga county in NY. Sales tax there was 7%. But if you drove 3 miles southwest of my house you were in Rensselaer County the sales tax was 8%. 4 miles directly south and you were in Albany County, where the sales tax was 6%. You get so used to sales tax that you just calculate it or estimate it in your head. If your item is $49.99 you will pay $53.42 (most places that have sales tax keep it at 7%).

The month before the day comes from wall calendars. The US also isn't the only place to put the month before the day, Japan does too. It's just that Japan uses y/m/d... but often people in Japan leave the year off and just do m/d.

I started drinking at like 12, so did all my friends...we couldn't of course go to the bar, but we always had older people buying for us, and we just had party's back then or a group of us would go hide somewhere, and drink, also took my parents alcohol here, and there, and then blame my father when my mother asked about the alcohol...lol, hell even a few of us used to put vodka in iced tea cartons and walk around drinking it, and even took it on the school bus!!

      Basically this.
No other country is put under the microscope like the US - its politics and its way of life. It's not really fair, honestly.
If my immigrants parents from the East can make a living and get use to most of the cultural differences than many Europeans find "weird", then so can they.
Take for example the drinking age in the US being 21. That's literally a first world problem. To me, it really doesn't matter if it's lowered or stays the same.

As a Texan I've been outside the US but that was years ago. I've been to California because I have relatives there. However when I do go on vacation I stay mainly in the state. Remember Texas is three times the size of the United Kingdom. And there are still places in the state that I have not seen.

I am American and I hear the same thing about tipping on all of these videos...I don't agree. There are a lot of Americans like me...you can screw up my order 6 times and if you are apologetic and friendly, you will get a tip. You can serve me the best food I have ever had but you are rude...you get nothing. I feel no obligation to leave a tip...earn it or don't, that is your choice.

For most of my 65 years, we Americans tipped 15% of the bill in restaurants. For exceptional service that goes up to 18-20%. In my area of the state, tax on food is 8%. I double the tax and add $1.00. So if the tax is $4.50 I tip $10. On another topic, I was legally allowed to drink at age 18 but later on that was changed to 19 and then eventually 21.
