    I know of a warehouse here in Louisiana, was a cabinetry place....i was buying wood from the guy, told him i was into old tools, he took me up into a room with like 4 antique lathes...original stomp pedal, but they added motors....beutiful machines in wonderful condition. almost like a museum. Beautiful brass tooling and stuff.

    I would never give that up. So. Freaking. COOL! It's a freaking treadle machinist lathe! Dude! *Drools*

      Bahaha as a machinist, this looks like a pain in the butt. It's super cool but it'd be awful to use 🤣

    Peddling backwards up hill is something I know a lot about. If only I understood how life works! LOL.

    I have a Barnes 4 1/2 and I am a fan of it. I periodically do woodworking with it, but not as often as I would like. I have a four jaw chuck which just isn't optimal for wood as compared to a three jaw or other appropriate head. Hope you find your #3!

    I picked up a trashed, foot treadle sewing machine cabinet that I have a vague idea about turning into a woodworking lathe or a powerhammer.

      Speeds, chuck, tool rest/banjo, and general precision.
      Metal lathes are slower, have chucks designed for gripping metal, have precision tool post and ways (compared to a rest you run the tool over and move yourself.)

    So I remember something an old woodworker told me, he has been collecting many different types of lathes for 50 years, now for all that time collecting the 1 tool that can build itself is a lathe. So since you have a lathe, why don't you challenge yourself into building the lathe you want?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  9 місяців тому +2

      I have built several lathes over the years. That is always a fun project

    Could you use the pedal lathe for tool sharpening?
    Grinding wheel attachments?

    • @adobotachibana732
      @adobotachibana732 10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah but it is usually not advisable to use anything abrasive on lathe that has exposed ways and screws as it would abrade those parts and will make your lathe inaccurate. (Not a machinist but it's something a machinist friend told me in a simplified way)

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  10 місяців тому

      No. You need the rotation of the spindle rolling the top towards you. It's something that looks odd but after one rotation of the pedals it feels perfectly normal.

    I don’t have a wood working lathe but if you would just like for me to take the metal lathe off your hands so you have room when you find the #3 I would be happy to do that for you. Totally don’t mind helping you out there 😎
    Great video I love your content. It’s always cool to see the old tools and your pun intended sense of humor.

    If you don't find a no3 to trade it with, I live in St cloud and would be interested in the no5. It'd go perfectly next to my powermatic 4224 and Underhill style treadle lathe, how much wood you want for it?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo

    Pedaling backwards looks so alien & awkward. Why did they build in a reverse loop so you could pedal forward with more power??

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  10 місяців тому +1

      honestly it is something that feels odd for about one revaluation and then feels perfectly normal.

    How is that spinning enough to machine metal? Super slowly?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  9 місяців тому

      Currently it is set on the lowest speed for thread cutting. It can go so fast as toy need it

    • @jmoneyjoshkinion4576
      @jmoneyjoshkinion4576 9 місяців тому

      You want a slow speed for most steel to both save the tools and to not heat up the metal causing potential problems, now brass and copper can be used in a wood lathe on a slower speed safely. But generally the harder the metal the slower the speed.

    I thought only cyclists in the circus could pedal backwards and get somewhere, and that a clog would only impede progress, knowledge is power and at times learnification

    Woodworkers can use metalworking skills, but a lath? A forge and anvil would be far more useful to a few woodworkers who have the space and desire.
