My mom bought me my first electric guitar in 1991. I used to love this song back then. Mom died in 2021 of Alzheimer's. I heard this today and started sobbing. Miss you mom. You taught me how to dream and this is the soundtrack to my dreams as a kid.
Slash made me pick up the guitar, because it looked cool to me (don't judge me, I was a dumb, trend following kid back then...) John Petrucci and Alex Lifeson made me take the guitar more seriously. But Eric Johnson... EJ gave me the pure inspiration to master the guitar in all it's shapes and forms!
I don't care if there are technically better players than EJ ( doubt there are that many though) but his sense of melodic composition and that sweet tone is just godly. For me the Goat of guitar.

All I can say is the man commented on his F.b. page and gave me a condolence for my son and bandmate jason I lost in Aug 2020, I think he is super humble, I've been struggling with my sons passing, I had tears the day I read his message but it was joy, I will be a fan of his till forever is thru.....

Saw him at House of Blues in New Orleans back in 2007( I think), after Katrina. I was tripping balls, and the ambience was comforting, the whole show the soundtrack of my trip. Never smiled so hard for so long in my life, my smile muscles were aching next day

Ive seen him live myself back in 99... he put on a great show... Derick Trucks Band opened for him... Thats before Derick Truck became famous... i saw him out in the parking lot unloading equipment from the tour bus not even knowing who he was lol
The more I listen to Eric Johnson I think he must have sold his soul to the devil to play like that. Just kidding - he has so much soul!! beautiful sounds, virtuoso technique with musical artistry. He does it all. Check out his acoustic guitar work - same awesome mastery. Gives me goosebumps!
capsuleboy I find Eric's music infinitely more listenable than Satriani or Vai's. I have bought Eric's music and am learning his songs (and really need a better strat!, lol), which is the biggest compliment a fan can give their artist. I have no desire to do the same with Satriani or Vai, whose music is tiring to the ear. Eric is a white knight of guitar, Satriani and Vai have a darker tone. If any blame could be placed on Eric for not being more famous, it would be his underwhelming stage presence and reserved personality. However, Eric's success is greater than 99.99999% of those who pick up a guitar. The magnanimity of his life can be only judged by him and God, not his "fame," which is a passing quantity. He's my favorite electric guitarist, pierre bensusan or tommy would be my favorite acoustic...

Actually, he is quite fast too, and I am pretty sure he can tap the guitar as Van Halen, but he doesn't do that for taste reasons I guess.
He is actually insanely fast and articulate but doesn't highlight it the way most skilled guitar players do. Especially during those first albums.
