The Romans flooded the Colosseum for sea battles - Janelle Peters

- Dig in to the history of the Roman Empire’s staged gladiatorial naval battles and how they flooded the Colosseum to reenact famous battles.
--
Starting in 80 CE, residents of Rome and visitors from across the Roman Empire would fill the stands of the Colosseum to see gladiators duel, animals fight and chariots race around the arena. And for the grand finale, water poured into the arena basin, submerging the stage for the greatest spectacle of all: staged naval battles. Janelle Peters details the history of these mock maritime encounters.

Why did you use ft for the depth and then proceed to use metre for the ships length? Can you just stick to metric?
Feet is actually quite easy to calculate with. Just ft * 3 = m
@@petermueller69 That is not really a good estimete. 6ft would be 2 meters by your formula. The people who have read your comment will start overestimating peoples heights in feet.
@@schnoz5455 okay yeah 6ft is 1,82
like if Gladiator 2 trailer brought you here
At this point I have no idea who really invented flexing
It was obviously invented by Julius Flexius
Beautiful animation! Thank you so much for existing Ted-Ed.
Wow... Sometimes i am trying to imagine how gladiators felt before fighting with wild animals...or before these battles
Seneca wrote of two such gladiators who killed themselves rather than fight - one suffocated himself with a sponge used to wipe after using the bathroom, and the other stuck his head into the spokes of the carriage that was taking him to his fight until his neck snapped.
Judging from these, it seems like being a gladiator with an upcoming fight was pretty terrifying.
@@pat9929 woooow nice story patrick
Patrick Gregg gladiators were more like MMA fighters so not that terrifying I’d assume, just nerve wracking
@@KhezuWiggles yeah but with the small detail of death if you lose
@@rf1283 nope. Recent research shows that professional gladiators rarely died. They were basically celebrities and their sponsors ensured they were always in top condition. It's true that fights to the death were also held, but the ones who fought those were prisoners, not gladiators.
Gladiator 2 trailer brought me here.

Naumachia literally means "Ship-battle" - from the Ancient Greek "Naus" (ship) + Machē (battle)
Since we're talking about fun facts, gladiator translates in greek to "monomahos" from Monos(alone/single) and mahitis(fighter), therefore lone fighter.
these videos often have many comments with inaccurate linguistic and etymological information. I'm glad to see a correct one!
I don't know the people behind these videos but gratias maximas !
Wow filling something that big is hard even today and the romans did it just wow
Another example of ancient technology and feats that modern scientists and engineers can’t figure out.
To be honest, it's more like we don't know the exact way they used to accomplish what they did rather than us not being able to explain it. The method isn't documented, only the results, and that doesn't imply that what they did transcended their technical knowledge avaible at the time.
Its not that they can't figure out how to flood it, its just they they dont know which of the possible methods was the one they were actually using.
@@Guille9856 Thank you!
Ask a STEM guy and they'll tell how it can be done. Problem is how they actually did it is unrecorded, so it's impossible to know for sure until a time machine is invented.
scientists and engineers has to recreate those scenes.. they need to ask permission from the italian government to fill water in the colloseum today in the modern times
This lady is the best narrator that Ted-ed has.
Title: "How romans flooded the Colosseum ...". Voice inside the video: "It's still a mystery how engeneers flooded the arena".
What event do you want to host dear Emperor?
Emperor: yes
What an awesome video! The drawings are beyond words. Loved it.
The Mortal Kombat Tournament was also held there right?
Colosseum was Probably based of it
No. Not possible to do microtransactions in the arena
As a event organizer myself this gave me ideas 👀
Romans: the ancient Coliseum was built to display power
Also Romans : and what better way to display power than to turn it into ONE BIG BATH TUB
If you're doing this for school:
0:18 50,000 People
1:41 Musical performances, public execution, gladiatorial combat...
3:15-3:35 Water performances (Animals walking on water, swimmers with torch lights, boat performances)
Why the heck has there never been a scene in a movie with this`?
It would look so awesome, and most people would be like, that cant be true, it must be fiction ^^
Chariot battles, horse and gladiators, it gets boring after a while, but no naval battle yet... I hope we will get to see it on the big screen some day
Not gonna lie, I would love to see a flooded water battle
I just don’t want to be the one fighting
In some smaller towns the roman coliseum is still the largest building after 2000+ years.
Watched this in the Colosseum. 10/10 for immersion.
Why are you using B.C. and C.E.? Wouldn't it either be B.C.E and C.E. or A.D. and B.C.? Confusing...

i really wish i could have seen this. this sounds amazing.
This makes me wonder why architects and engineers complain that to do a similar feat inside an arena in this era is too expensive. Yet, the Romans who flooded and drained the Colosseum was funded by a few who are not even millionaires.
Because the colosseum was built by slaves

I've heard about the floodings years ago and had always wondered how they did it
0:45 it's actually náu-makía from the ancient greek words ναυς= ship , μαχια = battle
Spectacular video! Thank you. ;) Congratulations from Brazil! ;)
Naumachia is a combination of nautas and machh meaning sailors and battle
Also it is important to mention that the plural form used in this video is correct, but it is spelled naumachiai rather than naumachiae as one might (quite understandably) guess.
Also, the theatre shown at 1:52 isn't an amphitheatre because the 'amphi' prefix means 'both', and that's because a completely circular theatre looks like two subjoined regular theatres.
*In time of war, the laws are SILENT.*
Yeah, but still dont break it. When you lost the war, there will be consequences. Winners will judge the losing side. That's how it works
I had no idea they flooded their Coliseums. The Romans were pretty advanced.. gotta admit
Man that’s far cooler than anything we have today.

That would have been an awesome sight to see
yo bring this back it is so cool. it's like a renaissance fair but with navel battles! just put in some rules so it's not to the death and you have the coolest sport ever created.
I didn't even know they did that until now...
My brother is an architect, and maybe I could recommend he makes a mini Colosseum in my backyard. LOL
Just got back from Italy. Our tour guide said recent study has determined there was no way they could have made the Colosseum leak proof.
80 AD what a great year
The engineering of its mechanism is very impressive.

Flavian amphitheater- my name feels so grand every time I hear it
Parents: “Video games lead to violence”
Roman parents: “Watching public executions while vigorously laughing at them is a good entertainment for my children.
TED-Ed: “The Romans flooded the colosseum by filling it with water”
I had to do a double take on the title and blurt out: wHaT.
*_I heart every British accent and, yes, the video was epic._*
Vladimir you mean "heard"
Why have I never come across this information!? Awesome!
Last week I was learning that in school lmao
Why is the depth of the water given in feet? In my opinion an educational channel should be consistent with units and should use the metric system.
1.524 meters
Can you imagine a modern version of this, as an Olympic sports or with remote control drone battleships?
No
Not to mention the speaker stone, a place where you can hear the person as if it was next to you anywhere in the arena.
Tbh i’d actually pay to watch an actual naval fight
Wow, the sentence at the end:
„Want to learn more about history and scrience of your favorite sports“
well... does not nessecarily mean „murder is a sport“ but kind of points that way

This question comes up all the time when I teach ancient Rome. Thank you for doing a video on it!

Our tour guide said they didn't have conclusive proof that they filled it in
If you want to know how they flowed it I will tell you my teacher told us that they built an artificial lake near that was directed to the Flavian anfitheater
And they simply opened the pipe and water entered.
