She was truly great - Voice/ Music / Words melt into one. How fortunate we are to have heard and seen her. Greatly loved by her public and now enjoying her gentle retirement.
This piece has always touched my heart...I first heard this concert on PBS in 1987 I recorded it and rocked my now 32 year old son to sleep by her voice. Dame Janet Baker was his first hearing of Opera.
The particularly sensitive interpretation of Janet Baker and her sense of vocal drama during this performance have singular focal points - which play the role of reference light markers - a phenomenon of crystallization of irrational affects. Her legato is truly exceptional and gives much sense to the music intents. Thank you for posting this great video!
One of the best opera performances I´ve ever seen! (unfortunately not live. Only on TV.) She was sort of the Judi Dench of opera! (looking like a nice British Dame. But capable of more dramatic expression than anyone else!)
@fairlytaleofnewyork so glad you enjoyed and appreciated this. It really is one of the most beautiful moments I know from any singer in any work. Perfect, really.
Remarkable. Sublime.
Many of the most satisfying recordings have Raymond Leppard's name on them.

What a magnificent effort and achievement by Raymond Leppard, it's just a wonder of skill, talent, and real beauty..
