this has to be one of my favourite guests/ JRE - everything discussed was so interesting & well explained. I reacted like Joe did each time, jaw open just repeating "wow."
Really agree with the point on sleeping ironing these brain sequences out. So many days I’ll practice a song, struggle, and then the next day I can play it fine.
I learned hockey at a later age. And I sucked one day, went home went to sleep and the next day I noticed a dramatic difference! I was blown away how I didn’t get better by just practice, I got better after a good night sleep.
Corticobasalthalamic tract I think is the one necessary for automaticity.. Surprisingly the impulse from the cerebral cortex motor planning area goes along this tract to the basal ganglia region ( sub cortical) and to the thalamus and ascend again to the cortex to the motor area (area 4) to have a controlled motor outflow. For example the first time u thought of throwing a ball u were clumsy but u managed to do it. Over time though u got better at it. That's because the basal ganglia takes some time to get it right. Eventually the circuit well formed is very efficient in sending out the desired output. Funny thing is the corticobasalthalamic tract has some inhibitory connections as well.. these inhibitory connections are from the frontal cortex and has to do with intellectualizing the act. For instance if ur thinking of the notes u need to play visualising the song sheet as ur playing, there is an element of stacatto there.. however if u play repeatedly and commit to "muscle memory" u play smoothly but when asked what the noted u were playing are, u may be at a loss to write the notes. Intellectualising is an enemy of automaticity. Probably y some musicians find theory knowledge a hindrance to their playing ability and prefer to go by the "feel" instead.
John Law ~ I may have gotten the name of the tract messed up but it's on those lines.. it's very interesting indeed. Most people attribute muscle memory to cerebellum. This however is a very important pathway. M sure it's integrated with the cerebello spinal pathways but this in itself is the proposed pathway for automatic memory...
as lame as an example this is Ive known it since i was a little kid. If i was stuck on a video game, especially in the olden days when it was mostly platformers, I would wake up on Saturday morning and turn the game on and sail right past. I doubt im the only one. I never knew why that happened, just that it did and its still reliable today.
Same thing with any sport or physical skill. Especially when I was learning tennis -- would end practices frustrated and throwing rackets but come back the next day with some serious level up to my serve or forehand, etc. Your brain is integrating and strengthening the pathways without your conscious effort the more you repeat anything.
Sitting there talking about how you cant recall how you tie your shoe I started thinking I don't know how I tie either so I had to go put my shoe on and try haha
So is there a level where someone just stops improving a skill regardless of practice? Like, will someone stay at purple belt level or not become a pro skater regardless of practice? I'm thinking there's like a genetic stop point. Smart people chime in.
Brian Myers No, You should read outliers by malcom gladwell. They found that the NUMBER 1 FACTOR in how far you can go with any skill is how many hours you put into it. If one guy puts in 10,000 hours amd you only practice for 1,500 hours, He will be better than you
bazil cardamone......Yes, very good point. I read Blink by Malcom and I am familiar with Outliers. I'll have to pick that one up as I enjoyed Blink a lot. Thanks for the educated response!
Not bad, your hair idea was a far better choice then the obvious played out other choice. Well done, the joke less traveled. That sounds deep, but im not gunna lie, I have no fucking idea what the fuck that shit means.
Getting 8-9 hours sleep is a PSYOP. I literally changed my routine from doing that, to getting 6 hours at most and waking up at 4:30am. My Testosterone levels went from 350 to 700. Not even kidding.
I dunno i think some insane special forces can stay up like 4 days full alert. I think lack of sleep enables yoru ability to just say "fuck it i dont care" and stop thinking about how ur gonna carefully land ur leg. Maybe..... for some people. Like fat people. lol jk.
Dude out here looking like Macklemost.
Underrated comment IMO

So true. Couldnt play a song on the guitar, slept and then the next day it actually felt easier
Did u really try though ?
I can attest to the last part about musicians
You that shit playing dark souls. You find a really hard part, take a break, come back to it the next day, and fly through it.

Muscle memory
which is actually just regular memory that runs through more specialized brain mechanisms
Visualization is an essential part of the training of the
