    The 50mm 1.2 GM is the second best lens I've ever used. The 135mm GM is the best, but only by a hair. I just traded the 1.2 GM for the 1.4 GM, since I didn't use the lens very often. It will be interesting to see how it compares.

    Hmm - in Australia the f1.2 is only four hundred more expensive than the f1.4, so I would go with the F1.2 everytime...

    I wish you had made some comparisons with the same shots to see the background blur between the two and other comparisons that would make it easier to choose.

      The 1.4 bokeh isn't round, whereas it is on the 1.2. There's a video about that on UA-cam (forget it's name so can't find the link) but it is very noticeable. On that basis, I'm going for the 1.2 when funds allow.

    3:59 You can't give those lens buttons different options. It's on function button on two different places for better reach.
    A direct comparison of the bokeh would have been nice.

    Im curious, how do either compare of the 50mm gm’s compare to the older 50mm Sony Zeiss? Is it just size, weight, and focusing speed or is there a noticeable image quality bump as well?

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup did a quick comparison on their channel, and announced to release a more in-depth video soon. I think the bottom line conclusion is that the Zeiss is starting to show its age, and is new currently more expensive than the 50mm f1.4 GM which outperforms it. Personally I have the 50mm f1.2 GM and was previous owner of the Zeiss which I really liked up to that point.

    I have the 1.2 and love it. Saw the smaller sized 1.4 exists too, but I'm going to keep my 1.2.

    I wish they released a 50mm f/1.0 instead. Weight and price isn’t an issue

    If I could, because I prefer your videos to others.
    Could you not move the light out of frame on those b roll shots e.g. 3:58 keep the key light on the subject, or move it but don't move it off the subject. It's nice to have pretty b roll, but not if it's not down well, just make it simple and keep the key light still, it's actually a better production that way.
    Also, more b roll issues, they seem to be shot with the incorrect shutter angle/speed, or in 60p+ because they're extremely staccato and cut into seemingly correctly shot footage.
    Finally the stabs at the guy at the beginning for preferring the more expensive lens may have been rehearsed to be comical, but they didn't come across that way, instead I felt berated for my purchase of what's clearly;
    1) The best fast 50mm af lens for the Sony system
    2) One of the best 50mm lenses period
    3) A relatively inexpensive lens considering it's performance.
    This makes me dislike the female presenter a little and makes the interactions awkward for no net gain.
    Just offer opinions, keep it simple, do less fancy stuff and add some important stuff (that was missed).
    Audio was also an issue and seeing as though it's the most important aspect of video, that'd be good to concentrate on, it's less difficult than video, you just needed someone to pick up on that noise which sounded like clothing rubbing on the mic before wrapping up shooting.
    The B roll at 4:44 seems incorrect, he's the 1.2 guy but the cutaway is to the incorrect product.
    I hope you take this as the genuinely honest criticism it's intended to be.

    I have both! Still. I did not and do not like the f1.2 size and weight; if feels even heavier than it looks, like solid glass. Though a super performer the heft still bothered me so I decided to size down to the F1.4 and sell off the F1.2, a much better compromise. I still haven't sold the F1.2 but still mean to. I also have the f1.8 which is a super value and good for photography only; the breathing and gear drive is atrocious and unacceptable for video.

    The Sony FE 50mm f1.8 sucks honestly. From using Canon f1.8 50's and vintage lenses, I was so disappointed with Sony's lens. I would LOVE to see them updated it and make a mirrorless lens rather than what is clearly their A Mount lens with a built in adapter.

      I agree, I'd settle for an f1.4 too. The current 85mm GM is just dated, especially if you try to use it for video. The Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art outperforms it, and is not one of Sigma's usual boat anchor lenses but actually handles nicely.

      @Edwin-- Рік тому +1

      Yes me too, I will certainly not trade it in. But if you are a new buyer the Sigma and Sony 50mm f1.4's are very good offerings I think. I would have hoped more that Sony would update their 85mm 1.4 GM, which still uses the old coffee grinder motors instead of the good linear motors they use since the 24mm f1.4 GM.

    Thanks for the review. While I have the FE 50/1.2 GM I like the idea of smaller version that maybe for tuned to travel unless there arrives a f/1.8 or f/2 with an aperture ring. Tried the FE 40/2.5 G and while small just a little to slow for me. I believe Sigma plans to add a 50/2.0 to their DG DN I series which I will probably find interesting but not the quality of this. Lots to choose from for sure.

      @@bngr_bngr Yes, I actually own the Zeiss Batis 40mm f/2 CF and like it a lot. I didn’t use it on my A7C but now that for that kit I moved back to an A7IV I should just use that. Just wish it had an aperture ring and a programmable button.

      @@bngr_bngr On an A7C the aperture ring is a helps since there is no wheel near the shutter button to change the aperture even if your only shooting stills.
