    I ran my first marathon on Sunday and finished it in 4hrs 55 which I'm happy with. I followed your marathon for beginners program and it was great and helped me to get to the finishing line 🎉 I will recommend it to others without a dout so thank you 🙂🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️‍➡️

      @runningwithjane I would say trust in the program and get you're easy pace right, if u miss a session don't left I affect you mentally you don't need kill yourself trying to cram a run in as long as ur getting ur long runs in the main runs and you're s&c you will be fine, and enjoy the marathon all I told myself was you've trained you're best for this it's only a Sunday long run 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️ and it got me though it 👍🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️‍➡️👌. Good luck to anyone training for there 1st or 21st get it smashed 👏🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

    You pretty well described my approach to my first marathon. Made a goal for sub-4 since it sounded nice and the predictors told me I could do it! Ran the first 20 miles at 9min/mile and the last 6.2 at 13:30/mile. 😀

      @@runningwithjane Well, I developed some pain, maybe shin splints, 6 weeks ago, and decided to cancel my October marathon. So, I've been cross-training and am now increasing running mileage again. Will try for 5K/10K PB's in the next couple months and then hopefully a spring marathon. Thanks for all your support!

    My first marathon was the same way, same age, but in LA right after college graduation. I worked (at a restaurant/bar) both the night before AND the night after the race. Cannot believe I did that. 4:13, and I suffered for many days after. My PB has been 3:32 since, never broke 3:30, so when you did, I was internally having a pep rally, enjoying that through you! Ha. Just love your vibe and ability to balance parenting with this way of life (running, I mean). Thanks as always, my friend!

    I have been struggling to figure out how to become better at running marathons. I have ran two marathons and my experience were much like how you described your experience in your first couple marathons. I started watching your videos about 7 months ago and have found them very informative and helpful. I’m running the steam-town marathon in a couple and I feel that I’m going to have a much better experience. Thanks!

    Jane, Thank you so much for these videos. I followed your channel during my training (while running, before going out, etc) as well as a written 16 week plan I put together from several sources. I ran my first marathon at the Detroit Free Press International Marathon on October 20 and finished in under 5 hours!! I couldn't be happier / prouder! Your "coaching" was incredibly helpful and I can't wait to run another one!!! Thank you so much for your work!! - Jim

    Perfect timing for this video, in 2 weeks time I’m running my first marathon in Melbourne. I’ve been contemplating what pace to do, but after watching this I think running my easy run pace will be the way to go for this first one, rather than my predicted pace that the calculators suggest. It’s relatively slow, but if I can get the distance done, I’ll be ecstatic. Thank you for sharing this info.

      Yes! I've had a couple coaching calls lately with first time marathoners, and I just tell them when they get on that starting line think, "I'm just going out for a 26.2 long run." Takes the pressure off and helps you go out at your easy pace. Then at 18-20 miles if you're still feeling great, you can pick it up and turn it into more of a race. If you have no desire to push the pace, that's also OK...you go for the finish line and celebrate that. Wishing you best of luck!

    Si happy I found this video. I’m running Chicago for my first marathon in twelve days and I’m so excited and nervous. Thanks for the tips. I have done 3 half and been running for just over 10 yrs. My last half was 1:53 Just a little inf about me 👍🏻☀️👋🏻

    Loved watching your videos the night before the Long Beach marathon. My 22 yr old son and I ran it (w Facebook live videos thru out the race) and had the best experience. Thanks for your great tips!!

    Years ago (2017) I did my first marathon (Barcelona, ​​my city).
    I had done several 10K, half marathons, a couple of 30K (here in Barcelona years ago a month before the marathon there was what was called “Maratest”, there were 15K and 30K)…
    My history in half marathons was almost always to have ramps, except for the last one that I did as a training session a couple of months before.
    I internalized not having the distance but having respect for it. The thing is, the thing is, I had so much respect for him that I made a beginner’s mistake (I called it “temporary insanity” 😅🤦🏻‍♂️):
    I put an adhesive bandage on my feet to try to avoid chafing and blisters, and with that I caused what I wanted to avoid).
    From approximately km 10, the edge of the bandage began to rub with each step, and as it was adhesive I couldn’t take it off until the end (with ✂️).
    I finished it, without gastric problems (due to possible interactions with isotonic, salts, gels…), without cramps, etc. without any of the many foreseeable or unforeseeable problems that can arise in a test like this, and what happened to me was caused by me.
    When I finished, on my way home, I was thinking about which and when I would sign up for my next marathon.
    But, a few days later, during the recovery sessions, my knee started to hurt: I suppose that because of the friction on the sole of my feet, I must have stepped in an abnormal way, and that led to those pains.
    After some time without them subsiding, I went to the traumatologist and they diagnosed me with Patellar tendinosis.
    Now, after recovering from that injury, the COVID era and so on, I signed up again for the Barcelona marathon next year.
    Since the end of May/beginning of June I have been looking to recover and build some base for when the specific training weeks for March arrive…😅

      I apologize for such a long message, but I thought I should give you some background information to see “a more complete picture.”
      Now I just hope that everything that went well in my first (and so far only) marathon goes well in this one, and that I don’t make mistakes (and also as a beginner, which I thought I had learned and internalized well) like I did in that one.
      Because in 42’195kms SO MANY things can happen and go wrong, and none of them happened to me e[xcept the one mentioned, and that it was my fault, that’s why I have “that thorn in my side.”]
      Nothing assures me that this time it will go perfectly, and that what went well for me then will go well again, but I have to try it, right?
      And side note: what they say that the hard part of the marathon is not the day of the race but the preparation…
      When I experienced it I realized that it really is like that.
      Another one note: Although I also agree that the distance covered by the 3-hour runner or the 4:30-hour runner is the same as the 6- or 8-hour runner… it is true that each person has to make their own effort, depending on their level.
      But😅🙄🤔
      I cannot compare the person who makes an effort weeks before preparing for it with the person who is going to do it to walk…
      And it must be taken into account, and warned, that in Europe (Barcelona is an example, in any distance, 5-10K, half,… but we are talking about marathons) there is a time limit for arrival, somewhat or considerably more restricted than in other places/races.
      That is why sometimes the so-called (or self-proclaimed) “slow runners” complain that they are not given time to finish.
      I have mixed feelings about this:
      On the one hand I feel that they cannot do it if they really do it with effort and dedication, but on the other hand that should “eliminate” the part of people who do that by walking and then say they are “marathon finishers”:
      You may have done the same distance, but it is not the same as someone who has made an effort, as I said, each one at their level, possibilities and capacity.

    The perfect timing to watch this video Jane. I'm 9 days out from my first marathon, and everything you've taught me so far has worked. This video sets me up for the unknown, if you know what I mean! I know there'll be pain, but I now feel more prepared. I think it was at around week 16 in your first-time marathon training plan I felt a shift from fear to excitement, as I just kept watching your videos and feeling more and more prepared. The training journey has been an incredible experience on its own, just learning about my body, and my mind, putting myself through hard things is something I've always done knowing it makes you stronger. I'm excited for the race day - I don't have a time goal, just to do everything as I've trained and complete it feeling as strong as I can! I'll let you know!

    Completed my first yesterday at the Marine Corps Marathon in DC in six and half hours…running/walking…goal was to finish and I did. It was amazing.

    Well this vlog is certainly very timely Jane, thank you! I guess you're aware that "marathon season" is between October-April here in the US, and have timed the theme of this video accordingly. I really liked one of your responses to another reader below in the comments, that finishing a long run (marathon) feeling as though you had more to give is in itself a success story; that's been one of the hallmarks of my more successful "halfs" and now longer training runs up to 16 miles at the moment, en route to my own first 26.2 (when and where, I don't know yet, but this autumn, for sure)! They definitely don't all end that way, I can assure you, but the better ones do feel exactly the way you described. In this, I feel as though mental preparation has been a key to success, especially in the day before the run. Eating right, resting enough, and preparing early are keys, but being relaxed "upstairs" has been the primary path to success for me. Mental preparation can be hard to define to an audience - it's not like my finishing times were so much better than my "bad" long runs as proof of having been psychologically in-tune, but there's just a more positive energy throughout the session, and a "come-what-may" attitude that no matter when I get tired, no matter how many hills, no matter the physical niggles that pop up, I'm in it for the long haul until the end, and then a little more if needed. Thanks again, Coach, I'll be watching in the days and weeks ahead!

      Could not agree more that mental prep is huge. Especially prior to the last 8 weeks of training because that's when it can get really tough. Some of the best training cycles and races come when we don't put so much pressure on ourselves to perform a certain way. what race do you have next?

    In the lead up to my first marathon I got a niggle in my left knee that never went away and so at race day I had to start doing a run / walk marathon after mile 10. Since then I did 3 more and they don't get easier but they feel shorter. This year I do 2 marathon for the first time but it was tough to get back into marathon training after the RnR San Diego.

    Chicago will be my 2nd marathon, but I ran the first one before menopause. 😂I had a great 20 mile long run (with a good fueling plan), but it was a cool day. The heat is going to make or break me. I'm shooting for under 5:30. If it's a hot day, I'm just hoping to beat the pace car. 😂 TC in Minneapolis was cancelled last year due to heat.

    Ill be running a 10k and 2 halfmarathons leading up to my first marathon next year. Ill need too really stick to my recovery plan and ill be throwing time goals out the window. Then by the end of nwxt years season ill be finishing up with my 5th half marathon where ill be aimkng for a new pb. Im a but nervous about this plan, but mostly im excited.

    Thank you so much! I ran the sydney mara (my first marathon!) 3 weeks ago with a time of 4:17 (my goal was 4:30) and I'm so pleased about that! For my next mara, if I'm aiming for a 4:15 pace and there're only 4:10 and 4:20 pacers, which pacer should I follow or should I just run by myself (I'm afraid i can't control my pace)?

      Hi there! I don't typically recommend following pacers. I've seen too many situations where they go out too fast and lead everyone into a positive split marathon/pace they can't hold. Best to run your own race - make a plan and stick to it in those early miles...don't let the ego take over. (If you do really want to follow a pacer, much better to start with the slower one as that will help conserve energy and start slower which is ideal.) Congrats on your first marathon!! 4:17 is a great time!!

    I think it‘s better when the first marathon sucks like hell 🙏🙌
    The learning curve after that is strong and permanent because the learned things are basing on blood, sweat and tears 👍 They aren’t just learned facts in the mind 🙋‍♂️ When it hurts it sinks deeper than just knowing things 🙏 In my eyes the most people are learning the best that way 😁 including me

      LOL, I'm not sure I agree, but I DO get your point. And definitely can be the right kick in the pants for people on the next one to train better/race better, etc. But I also think this can make people hate the marathon and not want to do it again! What I do know for sure is that some people will not listen until they have the bad experience...and this was 100% me.

      @@runningwithjane Yeah I got what you want to say 🙏 Make the „entrance barriers“ for people lower and more people will still stay with the running sport 👍
      I‘m a big fan of David Goggins and Cameron Hanes and there work ethic 🙏😃 I think that people played a big role in my views I have today.
      I‘ve heard the quote some years ago that goes like this : You can‘t tell the wrong people something right. And you can’t tell the right people something wrong 😄
      I think your approach is right and mine too, just right in some different ways.
      The barriers can as low as they can be there‘re still some people out there they are quitting running because they want to find something that is wrong and quit 🤷‍♂️
      And there are people like me that had a little bit of luck unintentionally in their first race. Because I hadn’t any shaving between my legs or problems with my shoes.
      But I went out way to fast and hurt like hell just get to the finish line with cramps galore 😂😁 And I‘m so thankful for that painful experience because it teach me a lot about running marathons 🙏
      So I think the deciding part is the spirit that the people are carrying and they look into the world 🙌

    I started training for my third marathon in January. I'm still trying to be able to run the entire distance and would like to be able to not need a hydration pack during that distance.

      There are other options besides a hydration pack as long as you are getting enough water/electrolytes. Handhelds and on-course water is what most people do. Good luck to you!

    Hi Jane! nice tips! do u think if my marathon race pace is around 9 min low 9s, should i be doing 10 30 to 10 40 min paces for my longruns? 15-18 milers? I live in humid myrtle beach i think i spoke before, and my marathon myrtle beach be coming march 2025 im hoping do better than last year where i hit wall at mile 18 broke down rest race. In winter time my long run paces r around 915-930 but summer my slower paces are 10-10 30, Should i do my long runs 10 30 paces summer? and around 9 45 paces when winter gets here? and come marathon day should i start high 9s and try work down low 9s marathon day? im trying to break 4 hours or 3 50 in full marathon. Should i run most my long runs 950-10 min paces when fall gets here? im also gonna try practicing using gels and hydration vest.

      Hi! What was your time at Myrtle Beach last year? Do you have another shorter race that predicts you can do a 3:50-4? I can give you a little more guidance if I know that. Typically easy/easy long run pace should be by feel...HR should be 75% of max or lower...and as a rule of thumb at least 1-min. slower than marathon pace and yes, definitely slower than that in winter.

      Hi Jane i ran 4 hours 18 min last year myrtle beach....it was 65 degrees 98 percent humidity......in my long runs prior i did atleast 3 20 milers my last long run before marathon was 3 weeks out i did 19 miler at 9 25 pace. But marathon day i started out at 9 12 pace and tried hold on and paid price after mile 18 and got slower after mile 18 and ended up with 9 50 pace at end. Should i aim start 940ish pace and try work down to low 9s? Im doing the myrtle beach half marathon in October im hoping get 1 44 or 1 45 but i can hold 755-8 min paces for 13 miles but going to 26 miles is a whole nother animal. I want to finish marathon strong in 2025 and atleast shoot for sub 4 im tiring blowing up marathon day.

      Running Chicago for my first road marathon.
      I hate that they don’t allow vests, but been altering my training to work around that.
      I also still have yet to figure out a fuel plan that doesn’t upset my stomach.
      But.. like you say. Control what you can and accept what you can’t. I fully expect for things to go south at some point, I’m nervous as hell, but also know I’ve put a ton of training in and we will do what we can do!

      @@kimberlymclaughlin1123 I have the same issue with the stomach, the good experience was with the Huma gel (from Amazon), it much more gentle for the stomach than the GU ones, no issues so far after running 25K today. I'm also preparing for the first marathon, it will be in Toronto on 20th.

    I am six weeks and five days out from my marathon. I think I may have shin splints on my lower right leg. It feels like a bruise on my leg, right near the shin towards the lower part of my leg. I'm wondering if I should rest it for the next two weeks. If I do, will that completely derail my training, and will I still be able to do the marathon?

      Hi Rebecca, I can't really say what's best without knowing more. If you can get into a PT (physio) soon I would highly recommend that and they can give you the best protocol. If you can't, I'd start by taking a few days off and seeing if that helps. Hopefully you've been consistent and can get back to your training pretty quickly so that the marathon can happen for you!

      @@runningwithjane Thank you. Unfortunately, the physiotherapist in my area works with the elderly and not with sports injuries. I have been very consistent with my training and have put in a lot of work. I really hope this hasn’t derailed me. I am unsure when I start back if I should just jump right back in because the next few weeks were higher mileage before the taper. I want to make it to the marathon and cross that finish line.

    My 10 km PB is 52:12. i ran multiple half Marathons. Fastest of them in zone 2 in 2:12 hours.
    Iam planning to run my first marathon at 27.10. In Frankfurt with a pace of 5,27 km. Is that to ambitious? 😅

      Prior to my first marathon, my 10K PB was 48.14 and half PB was 1:44. I tried for a similar pace to your goal and finished in 4:22 😂

    Yes, you don't want to go out too fast but you also don't want to go out too slow either. Both will wreck your overall time in the marathon.

      Of course the goal is always to find that perfect split, just barely negative splitting ideally. That's incredibly hard to predict for a newer marathon runner. The majority of people go out way too fast and either blow up or hang on for dear life and still have a slowdown. If you finish your first marathon strong, feeling like you had more to give, I see this as a positive...hungry for more with a much better idea of what you can do on the next one.
