- DOZENS of British war heroes - including dads and grandads - are flocking to Ukraine to take on Vladimir Putin’s army.
The ex-squaddies flew into Poland before walking across the border and heading towards the frontline.
One sniper, who served in the Army for a decade, told his wife he was going bird-watching.
The marksman - wearing fatigues and carrying a Bergen - spoke to The Sun in Medyka yesterday before going to war.
The dad of two, from the Wirral, said: “She’s going to freak out when I tell her where I am.
“I’ll ring her when I’m in Ukraine and explain.”
He spoke to us on the condition of anonymity and asked for his face to be pixelated.

You do realize that if these people get captured, Russian forces are in no obligation to keep 'em as POWs.

Evil prevails when good men do nothing. As an US Army combat vet I see this as war worth fighting. I'm tempted, seeing men like this just going cause its the right thing to do. I can't pull my brain away from this conflict. Seeing the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian soldiers is inspiring. They deserve global support on that alone. The things I've seen as far as Russian operations, it's pretty insane, the ABC's of combat operations seem to be absent.

Power plants, hospitals, police stations, schools, congressional buildings or their equivalent. We protected a whole lot from looters. Whatever infrastructure that was damaged we helped rebuild. We never targeted civilians, and our rules of engagement were to only fire if fired upon. I was Army Inantry. So don't try that BS line on me about the US destroying Iraq because I was there. That did not happen. If anything our kindness and good will was taken advantage there, when we were IED'd right outside a children's school that we would take school supplies to. What kind of person would do that. Take your BS line somewhere else to someone who doesn't know any better.

UK are putting forward a ban on ex military or volunteer fighters from NATO. going to Ukraine. As I am ex military I was a bit peeved as I planned to go until i heard the reasons, one being. If a British volunteer is captured or a body recovered Putin will see this as proof of an escalation in the west and it will step the war up a level. He is likely to say we are covertly sending forces into Ukraine and put his forces onto a higher level of international readiness . Ukraine has enough boots on the ground, what they do not have are enough infantry weapons. They dont have enough for their own troops. A friend of mine who i was going to meet up with has so far been filling sand bags and has been told thats all he will be doing, they are still very grateful for his help . They need heavy weapons not extra soldiers. Good luck to all our ex military fighting for Ukraine. I dont think it will be too long before you get armed and put on a front position, God Bless...proud of you all.......

As a British soldier for 16years I find it worrying that these people think they can fight a war without any training. Been a soldier isn’t a job you can just walk into and be good at it.
I don’t think they care - they just want to help and are willing to give themselves to help.

Instead of cheering on one side against the escalating things, we would be better served by pushing both sides (not just Russia) to work out a realistic peace deal immediately... perhaps along the lines of Russia leaving and NATO not coming.
There is no “deal” that putin wants. Unless it’s to have Ukraine, and probably many more countries.
