- The legendary B1-B Lancer performing its insane FULL AFTERBURNER takeoff, that is without a shadow of a doubt the most earth shattering takeoff i have ever experienced! Be sure to turn the speakers up on FULL.
The B1-B arrived into the Avalon Airport to be on static display during the 2017 Avalon Airshow. It was however touch and go on weather it was to depart, as it was suffering an engine issue during the morning and risked missing its refuelling tanker on the way to Guam. Thankfully they got her working and she most certainly put on an epic show for departure!

I was at an air show watching a B1 take off. Once the plane was in the air, all we could hear were car alarms from the parking lots. Very impressive to see these planes up close. Hats off to the people who fly them, and thank you for your service.
When I was young, I was living near Dayton Ohio, very near Wright-Patterson AFB. One year, we went to the Air Show with several of my uncles and aunts and this big bad bird showed up, the take-off was noisy enough, but everytime this thing passed by at 500ft and lit up its four burners was just another thing entirely....It rattled your ribcage down to your knees and feels almost as if your heart is about come up through your throat. And yeah, every time it went by, every car in the parking lot and I swear some beyond goes nutting crazy! It's almost they are complaining at the ear shattering noise as being too loud!
@@StryderK Yes, the fly-bys with full afterburners are louder than the take-offs, from the spectators' vantage point. The show I was at, they did several fly-pasts, a a couple with the bomb bay doors open, and on one pass, they did a complete roll. So very impressive to see the power and technology at work.

For those of you that noticed that you can't hear a Bone coming, I can verify that having flown it for over 1,600 hours. In the B-52G, flying low level in the early '80s, you would see a herd of cattle or wild horses running from us as we approached. They could hear the Buff coming, and maybe see it too, and they started running. Approaching those herds in the Bone, when I was in training in '86, they just kept grazing. They didn't hear us or see us coming.
What , u were training on the Bones in 86 ? I was at Minot in the mid 80s and they would do touch and go's there 🙂

When I was in Dutch highschool, one day we say an F-104 approaching. One of my classmates pointed out, we can see it but not hear it because it's flying at the speed of sound.
So it's not just the B1.
My Pops was on the original design team of the B-1A's, in the late 60's. He always referred to the BONE as his pride and joy.!

I was stationed at Dyess AFB from 1988-1994 and my favorite duty (if I wasn't flying the B-1B) was to pull a 12-hour shift as the Supervisor of Flying. After performing the "last chance" inspection before takeoff, I would park the truck at the hold line so I could feel the afterburners shake the ground. It was magnificent!

Living near Nellis AFB and frequently hearing the Bone take off during red flag I can honestly say that this video, actually no video, can capture just how loud the takeoff really is! It rattles the insides! It's a wonderful feeling ☺

One of my most awe inspiring memories of this plane while in the Air Force at Ellsworth AFB, SD, was seeing, hearing, and feeling 22 B-1Bs doing a MITO (minimum interval take off)! About every 12 seconds! I set up such a vibration that it was heard/felt 30 miles away!
When I was at Grand Forks AFB we MITO launched every bird on the base, all the B-1B’s and KC-135’s. After the rumble died the silence was erie .
I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB for 2 years in the late 1980's. It was the night shift and at least 5 of these took off one after another with their four engine blue afterburner. It was one of the best "air shows" that I ever saw in my AF career.
I was stationed there about the same time. I was headed to the remote radio site on the far side of the runway and timed my pass at the end of the runway at the same time as one of these. 50 to 100 feet over your head in full afterburner will rattle your bones! I thought the windows were going to shatter.
There used to be squadron of B1 at my local USAF base. On cold winter nights half the city of 500k could hear the planes taking off. The afterburner’s flames at nighttime were spectacular to see. This plane has got to be one of the loudest planes ever.
My wife and son got to play pilot/copilot in a B1 at Hickam in Honolulu. 40 years ago or so. They STILL remember that as one of the highlights of their lives. I gave the B1 crew a walkthrough of the submarine I was on and they repaid me with a great surprise for my family.

yeah, she's sexy. I was in the Navy, VA-35 Black Panthers, an A-6 Intruder squadron.
I was a KC-135 navigator stationed at Dyess. I vividly remember being #2 behind the B-1s in a gassed up plane (total gross weight about 300K lbs). The B-1 takeoffs would make our plane shudder like it was made of balsa wood and tissue paper. I had the feeling I was witnessing pure, brute power in its grandest form. And I was. Dusk/night takeoffs were even more spectacular; the four blue afterburners looked like something out of Star Wars. Great memories...

Watching it in a video gives little perspective on how massive these aircraft really are. Definitely one of the coolest jet bombers to see up close.
I was in the Navy and this is my favorite of all time this thing is menacing from the front view. It's badass.
I was stationed at Ft Campbell in the early 90s, army aviation. I remember the week after an air show, we're in the hangar, and hear this god-awful roar.
We're all like "What the hell is that?!" Run outside to see this baby taking off! That was awesome!

Last week I was driving by a U. S. Air Force base at 70 mph and saw a B1-B warming up on the runway. I passed it and was about 1/4 mile ahead of it when it started the run to take off. It very soon passed me and was in the air in very little time. It was very loud and very impressive. I love the look and the sound of freedom!
As a Canadian, i had the chance to spotted a B1 once in my life! awsome bird!
Did a model of one of these as a kid..fast forward 20 years...heard a very loud plane flying over in Freeport IL..ran outside and guess what it was...the pilot had a friend in town and apparently altered his course a bit to do a flyover..was quite a thrill to see one of these awe inspiring aircraft.
I used to fly patients to a nearby hospital in Abilene a couple times a week in mid 2000's, and was always impressed by these beautiful jets 👍

My dad was a B-1 pilot such amazing planes!!! I remember growing up in Grand Forks ND and watching the B-1's take off at night with full afterburner!
I was working at a warehouse near an airport when an F-15 flew RIGHT OVER MY HEAD. I could see the pilot in the cockpit just before he went vertical in full after burner mode. They were twin GE's or Pratt & Whitneys. Don't know which ones. My heart actually ABSORBED the rumble ! I almost went deaf. Closest I EVER came to soiling my pants front and back. It was my first air show & the other employees didn't tell me what to expect. They laughed at me for years. That was 14 years ago. It still ain't funny to me.

@@davidhoffman1278 ??? huh ??? Water or methanol injection has been used in both piston and radials in WW2 to prevent knocking which also has the effect of producing higher HP. In old turbojets water was used to produce greater ejecta and therefore higher thrust and was used mostly at take off. All that aside, maximum dry thrust means full military power. Wet means that the afterburner is receiving fuel.

"Wet" meaning afterburner is in use is a new usage for me. I am used to reheat or afterburner.
We had them in Wichita Kansas when they first came out,and got to see these flying a lot.One Tuesday night a month after dark,people could go to the Wichita Aviation Museum and go up in the old control tower and watch these take-off.They were so awesome sounding and the flames from the afterburners were so cool.I worked as an a&p mechanic at the city airport and these would come and shoot approaches and do touch and goes directly in front of our hanger.Seeing and hearing one of these up close is a treat.The best airshow demo I've seen is one of these.The B-1 lightly loaded with just fuel can perform like a fighter and the climb performance is awesome!

When I was a kid a my dads in Box Elder ,S. D. They would take off right over the top of the trailer house. Those blue flames were amazing to see.
I stood at the take-off end of the runway at Farnborough for a B-1 takeoff some years ago. The earth was shaking. Grown men were covering their ears. Like being at a Deep Purple concert.

When I worked on the line in the 90s on C130s at Dyess the B1s would do high speed flybys in afterburner with wings swept. I nearly jumped out of my pants a couple of times because you couldn't hear them coming, the sound would hit full force as they were already passing.
The Bone is easily the sleekest bomber ever built. It looks like it's getting ready to break the sound barrier at ground level.

I did always think the B1-B and the Tu-160 were some of the best looking planes ever.
But 800 mph is a JOKE, we should be trying to get the speed of the B-1 higher, 1200 mph if possible.

@@glennredwine289 The B1A was rated for Mach 2.2, but the program was halted for some years and when it was revived requirements had changed and they were ok with the slower speed I guess.
It doesn't do it justice, ever get a chance to go to an military air show, stand near the runway and experience your insides shaking when they open up for takeoff. Miss those days even though I'm nearly deaf now. That roar can still make the old patriotic flag pole stand up.

Remember yrs ago all of us f16 crew chiefs would stop and watch the B1 takeoffs every time,,,, so loud, you could feel the rumble right through you.. It was awesome.
I’ve seen these fly at air shows. The takeoff is impressive but the high speed, low level pass is absolutely amazing. It seems to come out of nowhere moving at an incredible speed (high subsonic was the approved speed when I saw it). The massive sound doesn’t hit until the huge aircraft is almost on top of you. Truly an impressive and magnificent aircraft.
I noticed the takeoff speed seemed really high given the run this one made, must be over 150mph near 200? Why?

Yes, same here. I can still see that almost vertical climb.....and the noise, just beautiful. The Americans surely do know how to build them. There was a static display A10 Thunderbolt there as well. The pilot was explaining how ground support is so much more "fun" than big bombers. Crazy!

Once in the '80s armed with inside info I took my crew down to Boeing field and we stood along the north fence directly in line with the runway. Sure enough right on schedule a B1-B made its full afterburner take off right over our heads. Reminded me of being in a tunnel with a hundred car freight train coming through at full speed. Couldn't hear yourself think let alone the person beside you screaming. Gotta love it (well, you know, if you're a man with balls and an appreciation for the finer and more awesome things in life like raw unfettered man made power).

I remember when the mighty Lancer paid us Chileans a visit in one of the FIDAE events (Can't remember exactly which year was it, I think it was 2006) but FFS the sound of that bird roaring in the sky was from other world. Never heard something as spectacular as that... The runways at Cerrillos couldn't hold it, so it had to takeoff/land from SCL. Truly an awe-inspiring machine.

I lived in Wichita, KS a couple of miles north of McConnell AFB and they staged B1-Bs out of there. Beautiful. When they'd go off on afterburner, they'd set off cheap car alarms in the neighborhood. Amazing plane.
When you're stationed at a base with these puppies it's cool for a week. Then you realize you can't have a conversation on the flightline because it's so loud, and someone's car alarm is going off.
When I was on Guam they’d fly over my my job site at Alupang and it was like 8.0 earthquake, not to mention not being able to hear a guy standing 2ft. Away from you.
Same with F-16s. I was stationed at Kunsan and my dorm was 2 blocks from the end of the runway. They always fucking took off in groups of 4. I would be on my phone with my wife and could hear them starting their run. Would have to wait until they all took off. The B1 is flat out loud considering it has 4 of the same engines the F-16 has. LoL, stupid loud.

"Earth-shattering" is the right word for it. I saw these at the Dayton Airshow a couple of times back in the '90s. The sound is beyond unreal. Second-loudest airplane I ever heard (Concorde was #1).

There are two halves of me that argue about the B-1 constantly. One half says the B-1 was a colossal waste of money, filling a nonexistent void and never really having the hoped-for impact. The other half (no doubt my inner 10-year-old) says IT'S THE FREAKING B-1!!!! I LOVE THIS JET!!! I'd be a terrible defense budget manager.
I live about 3 miles from the south end of the runway at Dyess AFB, TX (home of the first B-1b). Many mornings I'm awakened by the sound of the bombers taking off in the early hours. It never gets old.

I know the feeling, friend. I grew up in Duncanville, southwest of Dallas. We were under the flight path to NAS Dallas. I watched the fighter group transition from the F-4 to the F-14 then to the F/A-18. I'm too young to remember the F-8. I remember groups of 4 blasting out headed south, or 6 ship flights of C-130s from the ANG squadron. Occasionally we would hear thunder from the house as the mechanics fired up engines in the test stands.
Now, they store overstock from car dealerships on the runway and they are slowly tearing down the old LTV plant. Kinda bums me out everytime I have to drive by it.
We built those here back in the 1980s in my home town of Palmdale CA at the Plant 42 complex.
I know what you mean. Every Saturday morning around 10:30 there's a Cessna 172 that takes off from Cut and Shoot Airport and comes right over my trailer house and wakes me.
My girlfriend lives right next to the base in SD see these take off all the time it never gets old

I had the pleasure of seeing one of these doing a Touch and Go out of Plant 42 in Palmdale, CA in the late 90s when I was driving down Sierra Highway. After touching down, the pilot took back off, pivoted vertical to the highway and then kicked in the afterburners! I suspect he got some grief for that maneuver, but I will go to my grave remembering the sheer power and rumble those engines produced. I spent the rest of the day trying unbury my chin from my neck.
We were doing a fod walk when a B1 taxied out to an adjacent runway 200 feet from us and launched. It was incredible.☺
We had a unit of these things at Robins AFB in Georgia. They used to fly right over my house and rattle everything. One did a flyover of the local stadium at just below Mach. It broke windows all over the Northside of Warner Robins. I was so glad they moved to Texas.

@Mark Ward Even now, the SR-71 at Max speed is near impossible to hit. It flies high enough and fast enough that ground radar can't track it well, and even if they did manage to track it, the missiles used to fire at it would be out of fuel and energy, far before they got close to it.
I was stationed at Kadena AB Okinawa, Japan in Air Traffic Control Radar Maintenance. We had a Ground Control Radar (GCA) unit (the pilots nicknamed Gonna Crash Anyway) situated right next to the runway. The SR-71 was on take-off roll with the burners lit. When it past the radar unit (it was only about 8x25 feet). I thought for sure it would blow the damn thing over. Even with my hands over my ears the sound level was incredible... inside with the door closed.
@Mark Ward The other not so minor issue was... there wasn't anything back then (or probably even now) that could be fired from the SR-71 or Y12 that wouldn't go right up it's own tubes. After a missile was released, by the time it actually fired, it would be behind it. If a gun was fired from it, it would overtake the round. Plus, there's the whole closing speed issue. The big question is.......... what was the SR-71 replaced by??? Nothing???!!! Don't bet on it. The stealth fighter was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base right outside Albuquerque New Mexico, and it was flown right over the city for years before it was known to the public. All the flights took off and landed during the night and they were kept in hangers during the day. The stealth bomber was also in inventory and flying before anyone even knew it existed. The SR-71 flew for over a decade before anyone that wasn't swore to secrecy found out about it. They sortied it at night mixed into the middle of a squadron of other aircraft. The other aircraft (usually F-4's) would depart two wide on two parallel runways at the same time (four in total, eight jet engines in total and all with afterburners lit) in order to mask the sound level of the SR-71 all by itself. Yeah... it's THAT loud. The only reason it was found out... an aircraft on the runway 'lost' some of its ordinance and the runway was closed until EOD could clean up the mess. There were aircraft behind the SR-71 so it was stuck out there. Come the dawn everybody on base was like, "What the hell is that thing?". And, since it was sitting there on the runway overrun only about 300 feet from the perimeter fence, all the traffic off-base was stopped as people wondered, "What the hell is that thing?". What the Japanese are known for is true. There were hundreds of people with thousands of camera clicking away non-stop. I used to watch the SR-71 blackbird take off from Kadena AB Okinawa Japan where it actually went 'public'. On its take-off roll it went through THREE stages of afterburners. It would lift off only halfway down the runway. It would hang about a hundred feet off the ground and tuck the gear, then point its nose towards the clouds, and climb straight up and out of sight (the afterburners) in less than fifteen seconds. And it disappeared after never actually 'leaving' base property. Something on that order could be flying out of Area 51... and nobody would even know it. The SR-71 burned so much fuel on its climb, it had to be refueled immediately. So... something could be doing the same after leaving Area 51. And without the IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) transponder turned on, the same as used by most aircraft so its call sign and altitude and speed show on the radar screen, it would never be 'seen' by actual live target radar. Makes you wanna go "Hum".
I saw it fly at an air show at March AFB in 1987. You could feel the engines pulsing in your chest.
When I was a teenager and my Dad was in the Air Force, we lived at Beale AFB. We used to watch the tankers take off in the afternoon and knew the SR's would be leaving in a couple hours. It took that long for the tankers to get ahead of the SR's. U-2's were based there also so we got to watch those also.

A Dyess AFB bird... I am an ole B-1b offensive Avionics Tech here (92-96) with 46th Bomb Squadron out of Grand Forks AFB and then later 34th bomb squadron (go thunderbirds!) out of Ellsworth AFB. Even though in Ellsworth, we were not part of the 28th Bomb Wing. It brings a tear to my eye reminiscing about this.
I recall in Ellsworth AFB (late 94-95), that we would start launching planes early in the AM before the sun was coming up during the winter months (which as you know, cold = denser air = LOUDER as the denser air carries the sound better). When the pilots cranked all 4 levers to full tilt during take off, car alarms were always go off. I recall that sometime they would sit a little longer on the brakes before releasing them causing lots of shaking throughout.
After that happened a couple of time, we were banned by the Base Command (1 star) from starting engines before 0600. So we became the unofficial reveille at 0600. Ahh fun times!
With that said, as loud as the Lancer was, i think (never took official measurements but damn) that the blackbird was even LOUDER than the lancer!
General Electric builds things even louder than their air conditioners.

I was working right next to an airstrip, with my head down in a cement mixer drum, washing it out and heard a thunderous noise that rattled me pretty good. It was a kc-130 refueler. When I lifted my head it was balls-out and really close to me. Awesome sound and what a rush. Made my day.
Was at Oshkosh a few years ago. Loudest noise I ever heard, and I was a blue shirt on a carrier in 1966.
Yup i live in oshkosh it was loud as hell they had some really loud jets this yr nothing tops the first yr the f22was here and it broke the sound barrier i was in midas and the window exploded we thought a car blew up it sounded like a bomb we ran outside to look and it was the f22 going over ever since them they seem to not go as crazy here that and the concord in 1989 was extremely loud

Yeah Steve I worked the deck in the late 70s and early 80s, brown and green shirt. Awesome excitment...........non stop 12 hrs plus a day. Had a Vietnam vet who saw combat tell me, "no damn way!" he'd do that, way to dangerous, to small of an area. Lol. Just another day for an 18 to 21 yr old. Thank you for your service.

This was awesome!! Glad I had the volume up. I used to watch jets take off from Pease AFB in Portsmouth, NH. I loved at dusk, when you could see the blue flame coming out. As for the B1, my dad worked on the project with Boeing (he was a spec writer). Every morning and every afternoon, he'd have to have his briefcase searched. He finally stopped carrying one, and just brought what he could tote in his pockets to work.
I got to work in this aircraft as a summer student intern at the Rockwell plant at LAX. It was when the 4th B1A was being built and the ejection system was redesigned. A great job to have even if it was minimum wage. The plant is now an air freight terminal at LAX.
Imagine a paint scheme of Fed Ex with a “Same Day Delivery” bomb on side being ridden by Slim Pickens.

Years ago driving down a highway in Arizona (don't remember which one) and a B1 flies low and fast over the highway and banks up and away. Wings swept - full glory! Simply awesome!

I had the pleasure of going to an airshow at Westover AFB in Mass once a long while back. Almost every US military plane was present, even the newly unveiled F-117 stealth 'fighter' (under guard behind a rope). The one aircraft that stood out among all others, like the work of a master among the chaff of lesser skilled hands, was the B-1B. There wasn't a single person who didn't comment on how beautiful (and deadly) it looked.
It’s a love hate relationship for the maintainers. I loved seeing them take off as the Sun set. The look and all the color spitting out the back contrasting with the dark taking over with hints of the red sky. Add a crispness in the air and the sound is just amazing. Watching a fully loaded aircraft as it hit about the half way mark on its takeoff, the wing tips start to dip and then swoop upwards as the aircraft begins to lift. I never did get to see awnings swept, high speed, low level flyby at sunset like the takeoffs. I did love seeing the high speed flybys with the wings swept. I both miss it and don’t. I miss my military family more.

@@Woodbug-b7t they sweep back but have flaps and slats when needed. That power is used for payload. The amount of bombs and fuel load maxed is huge. It was designed for a very fast trip to a Cold War enemy with enough nuclear weapons for the fleet to be considered a small country. Watching the wingtips droop to the ground just before they lift and carry the bomber upwards. The flight surfaces both wings swept and forward are worth looking into.

When these wonderful aircraft were stationed in Wichita, Kansas at McConnell AFB, every third-Thursday of the month was "Afterburner Night", and the public lined up by the hundreds at the old Wichita Airport (now an aviation museum) to witness. Grown men would weep with joy, and women had spontaneous orgasms when the planes took off.
It was glorious.
Used to go TDY to Dyess AFB years ago and when the B-1 was taking off all the car alarms on base would go off.

Absolutely it is, and its not a coincidence that the russian tu-160 blackjack looks exactly like our B-1 but its much larger in almost every way. The 4 jets are the most powerful engines ever flown, I believe each motor was 50000 lbs of thrust each. The tu-160 is, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful planes ever built by any country. When President Trump put the money into the military there's going to be new planes better looking than the tu-160 AND more dangerous to our enemies, if there was ever a time to prove to all countries that President Trump will not play BS games and be sure that when he says something our friends and especially our foes better know that he will backup everything he says. Unlike the previous appeasing globalist pus*y don't f*ck with the USA... And he means it, American exceptionalism is now front and center and I for 1 love it.

There is nothing like it when a b1 bomber took off.....it really did feel like an earthquake...
And then, when a b2 stealth bomber took off or landed it barely made a sound....it was an eerie feeling seeing a plane so big that didn't make noise..
I grew up 20 miles from Dyess AFB and when those things hit full throttle and afterburner you could hear it for damned near 6 miles. It made for really fun nighttime shows when they flew past my home town.
As I was driving down Hwy 271 in East Texas, I saw one in my mirror coming from behind me with wings fully extended. It flew by, and a short time later came back the opposite direction with wing swept back and hauling. Awesome.
I've seen these in person up close at airshows, awesome, a high speed bomber with the design & nearly the speed of a fighter jet, they are unbelievable.
One of the things they often do leaving a show field is roll the bomber 360 degrees. Anything you can turn upside down is a fighter ....
20 years ago saw 2 about 500' flyover I 25. In Wyo,then hit the afterburners and into a steep climb,I was between Douglas and Cheyenne,so maybe they were from F.E.Warren. What struck me was how large these birds are.🇺🇸
Agreed. They are bigger than they look. We got to go up in the cockpit of one at the Offutt Air Show a couple years ago. I didn't realize how small the cockpit was. 'Cozy' would be a good word. Pilot was in his chair answering question, said he was 28 years old.
I wish I woulda joined the Air Force instead of the Army.

I live in Vegas, and a couple times have been able to stand on the flight line at Nellis AFB during Green Flags when they take off. The last time there were eight of them in succession literally taking off one at a time right over my head. The sound and concussion they make is impossible to explain. Was by far one of the best experiences of my life! Most done realize how much fuel they carry and how long they stay in full burner after they take off.
I live across from Dyess AFB in Abilene Tx. These guys are awesome.
I remember being stationed there back in the day! 96th Bomb Wing😎 My then Commander looked and acted like Tom Landry Dallas Cowboys.
A couple decades ago, I wad driving down a highway in New Mexico, on my way to the next appointment. Beautiful day, windows down on my Van as I'm cursing at 65 mph. Next thing I know there is a roar and I am in the oncoming late. A B-1 had just flown across the road so low that it blew me into the other lane. Amazing to watch. 5 seconds later it was gone.
I was stationed at Edwards AFB at the time of the maiden flight and all of the test flight. Awesome aircraft.

I am from Abilene, Tx. Home of the B-1’s and I would literally hear them all day and night on “touch-and -go” practice. At night they are a sight to see. We would drink beer and have a campfire on the weekends and listen to the bald eagles and see the eagles fire all night long.
