    Great content Jon, really appreciate the time and effort you put into making the videos.
    This one has been interesting for me in regards to combining the different pentatonic shapes in different keys and starting with an up stroke. It’s highlighting a few areas that I need to work on. Thanks

      Thank you! Yeah, starting with both pick strokes is especially important when you work on 2-notes-per-string😊

    Do you have any lessons on your site where you cover the classic licks? Jimmy Page, Slash, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan etc.

      There’s already so many channels doing that. My focus is more on the best ways of practicing to improve the fastest.

    Can you explain the difference between the third part (slight variation) and the second part (when you start going down pairing the pentatonic box 1 and 2, starting with an upstroke, I need to go down starting with the box 2 right? To me it looks the same as the third part of the exercise) thanks again. Wonderful content

      Hey!
      The difference is that we start the pairs on the higher part, so we start by descending instead of ascending. Like I explain in the lesson, it's very common for guitarists to be more comfortable starting any scale on the lowest note, so by reversing that when you practice it'll free you up considerably when actually playing.

    Thanks for the video, helped a lot, but there's a few questions.
    Do i understand right that this whole routine supposed to be played with metronome? If so, it should be played with eight notes with metronome clicking on the fourth notes? And then, when i restart the pattern with leading upstrokes, the upstrokes should be on the beat/click of the metronome?

    • @JonBjork
      @JonBjork  Рік тому +1

      Thanks!
      You can use a metronome or not, just make sure your foot is tapping on the downbeats.
      The subdivision can be anything you're comfortable with, it's good to change it up as well. When restarting with an upstroke, the most important thing is that the picking is turned around. You could technically start with an upstroke but also start on the upbeat (if doing 8th notes) and still get the same technical benefit. The picking turn around is more to do with getting used to changing strings with both pickstrokes and not so much a rhythmical consideration.

    This looks really challenging... once again its one of this things that for some strange reason is hard to do . 2 notes per string instead of 3 . So I'm going to trust your method i will start this and i will try and be as disciplined as humanly possible... I have to be honest I'm a little afraid of this one . So fingers crossed 🤞

      It’s a very different feel compared to 3 nps, but imo very important to be comfortable with both if you don’t want to be limited😊 Just take your time and also try applying the speed bursts to find a good picking motion for your technique.

    There's a slick pentatonic type ascending thing that Mark Tremonti does a lot... I can't think of a specific song off the top of my head, but I think it's descending groups of fives that he then jumps up diatonically to the next position. I'll try and find an example, I'd love to learn that move.

      Good example would be the beginning of the solo for “show me a leader”

    95% of problems with speed and accuracy go back to the right hand. Often its worth it to separate the right hand from the lick or pattern and focus on economy of motion and pick slanting.

    • @JonBjork
      @JonBjork  Рік тому +5

      It absolutely can be but if your fretting hand isn’t in point it’ll never work. As Paul Gilbert put it. “The left hand is the steering wheel and the right hand the gas pedal, don’t step on the gas if you can’t steer”😁

    What string gauge do you use?
