In July of 1985, some 400 American and German soldiers marched from Wiley Kaserne in Ulm, to the Armed Forces Recreation Center in Garmisch. We left on a Monday, mid morning, and arrived in Garmisch on Friday around lunch time. Some of broke off and stopped at Schloss Linderhof on the way. Barney, you keep making videos of places of I've seen, so long ago! Thanks for making great videos that bring back great memories. Danke!
Thank you for watching and the kind comments. Im glad if my videos bring back good memories. I have not yet been to Linderhof (its on my list for the future) but Ive been to Garmisch a few times and have encountered soldiers from a few different countries there doing training exercises (normally hiking with big back packs). It does seem this is a good place for both tourists and military :)
Danke. Genau. Ich war im Sommer und Herbst dort und es war auch unglaublich! Thank you. I agree. I've been there in summer and fall and it was amazing too!
Lived there for a few years - out house was the last in town , so I had the entire forest and mountains as my view from our balcony. Loved it and hope to return
Been there many years ago when I served in the U.S.Army in Bad Kissingen. We went there on R&R. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Thanks for the memories.
Learned to ski there as a young man in the early 70's. I had an older German man teach me after seeing struggling to learn on my own. I never forget the kindness of that gentleman. After living there for almost 5 years, words can not tell you the love I have for Germany and the people. They took this 18 year old kid in and showed me what life was all about. I go back almost every year with my family to see old friends and to travel all around. Germany is truly an amazing country!
Thank you, it sounds wonderful. Im lucky to have travelled there many times and everytime i always imagine how awesome it would be to live there. I love the place!
Thank you for watching and for the kind words. I've been a few times as well and keep going back because it's just stunning everywhere. If I could afford it I would live there!
@@Barnyz I’m from Ireland and now live in Australia that’s why I haven’t been there in about 7 years. It is probably my favourite place to visit... would live there tomorrow if I could!
I was in the military stationed in Bamberg and we took recreation trips to Garmisch for skiing and in the summer for hiking etc. What a beautiful place.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Bamberg is also stunningly beautiful and somewhere I need to go back soon but I am always drawn to the mountains and GP is really perfect for everything. I need to go back soon. Have a super sunday, cheers from barnyz
Our family vacationed at Garmisch in 1961. One of the most beautiful places I had ever seen. My Father was stationed in Nurnberg at the time. The day we arrived a bunch of skiers were killed in an avalanche.
thank you for watching and commenting marco. I have visited Garmisch quite a few times (but for tourism reasons) and I also really love it there which is why i keep going back!
Although British I spent much of my childhood living in Nuremberg and my parents would often take us skiing to Garmisch for the weekend ⛷️❄️ I have such amazing memories , living back in England now for several years but it's as if half of my heart is still on Germany ❤️ who knows what the future may hold !?
Thanks for the cool and thoughtful comment. I lived in Germany for just a few years and also remember it fondly (imo the most underrated country in europe). I've visited GP a few times and love it there. If I could, I would happily live there. I hope you can go back soon as well
Hallo Fleck. I lived here 14 months 2008-2009. And I'm from Southern California 🌞. The first week of snow was always beautiful though but summers were beautiful.
Is this areas accessible for skiing at the nearby mountains. I see that you mentioned mount Wank. Is it feasible to go Zugspitze daily from Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Thanks for the great video.
Thanks for watching. Yes it's possible. There is a small train that links to some ski areas including zugspitze and the Garmisch-classic ski area. There are also some closer cable cars that can probably be walked to directly from the town (the town is big so would probably require picking a hotel in the right area but there are also buses). Im not sure if mountwank is good for sking i seem to remeber most people going up had sledges. I don't ski but when I was there the entire town was busy with skiers everywhere so I assume it's a good location for skiing.
I doubt it has changed that much. I think there is still a base there as I remember seeing soldiers of different nationalities out training a couple of times when I was in the nearby mountains
