Here at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation we have staff from different and diverse backgrounds. Indigenous people are from all over the continent and do not all look the same. Our Indigenous staff pour time, energy, and passion into telling the story of the Powhatan people in Tsenacommacah and it can be hurtful when people assume their heritage based on their appearance. We expect staff and visitors alike to treat one another with respect regarding their culture and histories, so please keep this in mind when commenting. Thank you and enjoy the video!

Always wanted to make a dugout canoe, but since I never got around to it I'll just watch you make one.

The way its been made is so convincing, no wonder it takes long time to build a canoe back then, thanks for sharing

One detail you did not address. Since pine tar is used as sealant, I assume the fire will turn the sap of a pine tree into pine tar, which is one of the reason pine trees are preferred.

So cool! I’ve always wanted to make a dugout canoe! Wondering how to get a tree that size in my yard!

I never appreciated an axe so much until after seeing stone axe work.

Do you made use of the fire for cooking or other uses while you're waiting? What was done with the charcoal and other "waste material" once it was removed from the inside?

why is he dressed like that? is that a costume? are we costumes? is he native indigenous person? jk cool lesson, it would have been better if it were an actual native teaching this.

I met this guy once while visiting the museum, he is in fact indigenous, though not a Virginia Indian - he said he and his father belonged to a tribe from Louisiana. As for the outfit, it is not an "indigenous person costume," it is a representation of the clothing of a person from a specific culture in a specific time and place - a 17th century Powhatan warrior/hunter. He is a historical interpreter, representing historical clothing and life, in the same way a person may dress as a 17th century English sailor or colonist at the same museum.

I love the purpose of the video but as an Algonquin women I'm wondering why you both are dressed in Algonquin regalia instead of simply hiring Algonquin people as models to recreate our Indigenous history.

You think he has a budget to hire someone for a video with 27k views? That’s ridiculous

Whats stopping you form doing this? Go tell your story, stop trying to get the white man to feel pity for you and do all the work. He obviously has a passion and love of the culture and people he wants to help the world remember. You have.... a whiny youtube comment.
