The final between West Germany and Argentina was in a sense an ironically fitting conclusion.

West Germany v Holland in Milan's San Siro was the most enthralling. Three players from either sides played at the time for both Milan clubs. Klinsmann gave an exhibition performance.

The best German team ever was the 1972 European Championship winning team that married organisation with real flair. Four of the greatest post war players ever in Breitner, Beckenbauer, Netzer, Muller plus a supporting cast of Hoeness, Grabowski, Heynkes, and 'Hacki' Wimmer. Superb.

I'm English and I agree not the best world cup. 1970 was great but I think 1982 and 1986 were right up there with it, and certainly better than recent world cups.
@@MCBhangramuffin yeah 2010 was not a great WC and while ‘86 I certainly up there , I think ‘06 is a bit underrated, I don’t think any other WC had as many stars featuring, I mean you had a stacked England side, a Brazilian side with Ronaldinho and Ronaldo, Holland with Van Persie and Robben, Spain with the spine of the ‘10 winning side, the best Argentinian team assembled for a long time, Messi up and coming and Riquelme was extraordinary in that WC, Portugal with CR7 and Figo, Germany had Ballack Schweinsteiger, Lahm Podolski Klose, and of course a stacked France side led by Zidane and then of course Italy with a team of Legends
If Gazza had gotten a toe to that ball across box at one all vs Germany we'd have beat Argentina in final and won it. Greatest World Cup in my living memory. I was 13 and on holiday with family in Skegness for business end of tournament and watched England games in various boozers with our old lass and our kid. Happy days .
To state that Argentina was a terrible team is ridiculous. FIrst, terrible teams dont make the final. 2nd, Pumpido broke his leg in the group stage and Argentina played the rest of the tourney with Goygochea who was basically a rookie at the national team level. Third which is the most crucial fact, Argentina lost 4 starters for the final because of that stupid 2nd yellow card of the tournament rule. Guisti, Olarticoechea, Ruggeri and Caniggia all received second yellows in the semi's vs Italy. This was mentioned in the video when Gascoigne received his second yellow of the tournament vs Germany but not for Argentina in the final.
Don’t forget also that Maradona was practically playing on one leg in this tournament, with an ankle swollen up like a pumpkin. Argentina did very well under the circumstances
Italia 90 was one of the worst World Cups ever staged- maybe the worst World Cup ever staged. Few goals, cynically defensive football, bad tempered antics, ugly and violent fouls, and awful officiating. The quality of the matches were generally poor. It was great if you were supporting the Germany, England, Italy, or the Cameroon teams- they were obviously the best teams in the tournament. But the Argentine side epitomized everything that was wrong with that tournament. They had 3 of their best players injured, so they decided to use cynical tactics by whining and bitching their way to the final- it's the most defensive Argentine WC side ever and they got as far as they did in the knockout rounds thanks to brilliant goalkeeping by Goyochochea, who was their reserve goalkeeper. It really was a shame they weren't knocked out by Italy in Naples. It was an ugly tournament in a beautiful country hosting the biggest tournament of the beautiful game. And to cap it off- the final match was, with the 2010 match the worst ever WC final match. The only reason the 1990 and 2010 final matches are worse than the 1994 final match was because the 1990 and 2010 final matches were both really unpleasant in their own way, whereas the 1994 final was just boring. The 1990 final was really bad tempered, very defensive and cynical- it saw 2 players sent off for the first time ever- it was honestly a suitable end to a tournament that had been like that all the way through. The 2010 final was violent, brutal, very defensive, horrendously officiated and featured a Dutch side that decided to resort to brutality to win. And the only positive thing to come from both those matches was that the better team won.
Absolutely loathed those 2010 & 2014 Dutch teams, just assholes. Also glad Spain beat them in 2010 because that would have been cruel if Holland won in South Africa.
this was the first world cup where globalism started taking over. granted, the european national squads were largely european, but most of the argentine players were already playing elsewhere.
Couldn't agree more, and now we're consistently having games and major tournaments decided by the television executives dream of penalty shootouts. It keeps audiences watching their channels for an extra 45 minutes and they think it's some kind of wonderful drama. It aint. Also, now in European champions league knockout stage, they've done away with the away goals rule. That was probably done with a tele exec in on the meeting. How real Madrid are allowed to go through to this years final after drawing 1-1 at City yet having drawn 3-3 on their own ground is corrupt. Real could be drawing at City 1-1 and hang on, which they did, till penalties. In the past, they'd have had to go to City and win or draw by a similar score in order to go through. now they just hang on till penalties. And no, I'm not a city fan. The whole thing is corrupt.
That Referee was in charge of the Referee's at the 2002 World Cup in Korea & Japan , but resigned because of the obvious favortism towards the host nation Korea
