I read "A Swim in a Pond in the Rain" a couple months ago. It's a fantastic book. I couldn't agree more that anyone who wants to learn about the craft of story telling or simply increase your enjoyment out of the books you read should read this book
Obviously I have no background on how you shave but Gillette et al are getting so expensive I purchased a double edge safety razor in my case a Merkur 34C and I rediscovered shaving. Got some soap and a cheap shaving brush & even with my modest tools it was a much more enjoyable experience whilst also being cheaper and giving an equally close shave. Maybe take a look.
Disagree depending on your background. Ultimately, Taleb is a "pop" writer. If you arent familiar with statistics, his books are good for a general audience as an intro or for sparking interest. But, he ultimately doesnt have a background in hard mathematics or statistics (his phd was in management science) and many of his claims or discussions are somewhat oblivious as a result. Still good books however.
Thank you, Giles!! I started reading 'A Swim in a Pond in the Rain'. Wonderful ! I had no idea Anton Chekhov was such a great writer but I would not have understood it without George Saunders analysis. What have I been missing?
Thanks Giles. Ambrosia for the mind. Definitely interested in A Swim in A Pond in the Rain. I hope you'll look into The Notebook: A History of Thinking on Paper by Roland Allen
4 Books that will make you a smarter person Summary 📚 "A Swim in a Pond in the Rain" by George Saunders: Analyzes classic Russian short stories, offering insights into literature and writing. 🪒 Henson Shaving: Innovates with a skin-friendly razor that minimizes irritation, crafted with precision and recyclable blades. 🤔 "How to Think Like a Philosopher" by Dr. Julian Baggini: Provides practical lessons on improving thinking skills through philosophy. 💭 "Artist of Life" by Bruce Lee: Explores Bruce Lee's philosophical musings on life, martial arts, and self-discovery. 📝 "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" by Joan Didion: Offers masterful essays on writing craft, self-reflection, and societal observations. 🎨 "The Art of Thought" by Graham Wallas: Explores the creative process with stages like preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification.
He's woke, frequently wrong, never cites his "sources", makes huge irrational conclusions, writes about things OT and irrelevant to his main topic to pad his books, and he flaunts personal bias even when confronted with alternative science. He's a pop culture storyteller. Nothing more. His time has come and gone. Even his most loyal of fans cringe frequently when trying to find value in his latest book "revenge of the tipping point."
Having availed of Ultralearning by Scott H Young and of Writing to Learn, on sale on Kindle, via the channel's affiliate links and Zissner episode recommendations for a modest credit, I modified my wishlist with the personal preference ethos of read what interests, intriguesand fascinates you: I chose George Saunders'd tome, On -Editing- by Helen Corner-Bryant, and The Art of X-Ray Reading by Roy Peter Clark, the last stemming from having selected Zissner prior! 📖 📚 👍
A started watching because I thought the first book was written by George Saunders, who played "The Saint" in films. I was disappointed but only momentarily
The idea of fiction always escalating has worked for thousands of years! Aristotle wrote in Poetics that in drama, actions need consequences, then reactions to those, and more consequences, etc. Even the South Park guys outline their scripts with “Therefore” and “But” to keep each scene flowing into the next.
The "and... but... therefore... and..." structure indeed keeps the action flowing, but not necessarily escalating. For that you need increasingly higher stakes, which is what keeps the reader riveted and is probably the most challenging aspect to deal with when crafting a story
Okay, second disconnect. You advertised Henson razors - I am a Canadian blade shaver 365 days/ year so I will try it - but in your podcast you have 3 days growth. Definitely off brand, regardless of the existential disclaimer.
Should I really believe someone that they are sharing 4 books that'll make me smarter when they aren't even sure how many fingers they are holding up?....hmmmmm Damn right I will, this is UA-cam after all.
It’s surprising how people are only scratching the surface and don’t take the time to read Uncommon Paths to Wealth by CrypticLore . Go out of the rabbit hole guys

Have you read "Learn To Think Using Thought Experiments"?
Unshaven, advertising for a shaver (lol). I'm the same way though, hate shaving, hate being unshaved. 👍

I was worried this would contain Malcolm Gladwell.
is he bad or smt?
