Just in case someone doesn't know already, 4449 is not going to be running trains anytime soon, due to being so heavy she is damaging her local track. Unit that problem is combated, 4449 and 700 shall stay occasionally steamed up displays. Though I sure hope to see them run soon!
Gotta give some respect to the owners at Portland. Instead of pulling the engine out with a diesel, they endure the fire alarms going off as the steam triggers it. I love it
Once when it came through San Luis Obispo, CA on an excursion trip, I was working in a building about 100 yards from and parallel to the track. The building had four of those giant roll up industrial metal doors facing the direction of the track. The engine was accelerating going south from the station and the exhaust barks were pretty strong. I guess strong enough to make a sort of concussion wave as it sounded like somebody was violently pounding on those metal doors to the cadence of the steam exhaust.
@@BobbyCase It might have more to do with the square footage of the doors (and that they are a bit loose in their guide tracks) than any high pressure. The doors were probably 400 square feet or more. So, a little bit of pressure against the entire surface at the same instant might be expected to move it. Many have heard these doors rattle around in strong weather conditions, but the air pressures are more random and from more angles than a steam engine which is sort of a point source of a pulse.
I saw her come to Fresno at speed with the Freedom Train in 1976. She was and is an impressive lady, especially to a 13 year old easterner, getting his first taste of western railroading. Before then all I knew was the B&O and the Chessie.

There’s apparently a rumor that engines like 4449 and 700 won’t run again due to the tracks being damaged by their weight, and the Oregon Pacific Railroad no longer willing to repair the tracks for the two big steamers. I really hope this isn’t true, but when/if it returns, Oregon Railroad and Navigation 197 may have a better chance. Mount Emily Lumber Co. 1, which was recently donated and due to move to Oregon soon, may also be capable of running on the OPR.
I bet UP has plans to run 4449 with 4014 when it comes to Portland next year meaning a Daylight on former SP trackage. 4449 is the only non-UP steam engine that is an acceptation cause it did team up with 844 back in 2008 with an excursion between Portland and Seattle.
I’d like that to, but it’s very unlikely. UP doesn’t allow foreign steam on their lines. There’d have to make an exception, but I don’t see it happening. That’s why most of 4449 mainline excursions are on BNSF track
@@chukowiley3823 still dont why up doesnt allow other steam engines except theirs, 4449 or 819 technically are up because up boughtt the ssw and sp in the 90s so its kinda stupid

Beautiful locomotive and great to see it in action. However, I expected a video of an excursion trip of a train using the SP locomotive. But most of the film was the engine sitting, going slowly forward a few feet, backing up a few feet and sitting still. Finally in the last ten minutes we see some actual action. The train moves forward for a while then it is again backing up. A missed opportunity.
Fantastic! Is there a date for the opening of the turntable at the heritage center? I was there a couple of months back and they thought it would be this year.
The fact that the only reason why this locomotive wasn't scrapped is just because the workers wanted to be lazy and this locomotive was the first time to be scrapped so they just took her out and the fact that some dude kept the bearings oiled for years as it was on static display
