Thank you for making this particular story and for sharing the adventure with us. It was in the year 2000 that I traveled around Australia in a camper van. When I made it to cradle mountain I realized that I wasn't equipped for multi-days backpacking trips and I didn't make it past a few hour day hike onto the trail. Following that disappointment I picked up a backpack for the first time since Boy Scouts and I've been backpacking for hundreds of nights since and made it to the most incredible and remote locations. It really was the Overland Track and not being able to do it that inspired me to get back into backpacking. Someday I intend to return to Cradle Mountain myself and complete it at last. Thanks for sharing this experience and sending me on my own trip down memory lane!

Yea. Congratulations Katie I am so proud of you. To watch you overcome your self consciousness and your fear and to go from turning your head every time the cameras near to actually sitting and talking on the camera is amazing I am proud of you. I hope that she will talk to us more and spend more time with us live. I suspect you’re probably a pretty amazing lady if Dan hangs out with you.
On a sidenote Dan those of us who read your book and watch your videos know a bit about you and where you came from. It would be nice to know a bit about Katie and where she comes from. If I might suggest one evening as you sit around the campfire that she or you or both of you just tell us about her it would be a nice addition to the story. Great job I enjoyed Africa a great deal but I am enjoying this even more you have learned a lot and come along way

I think of the people who never get out of their own neighborhood. Just in the past week my wife and I skied in Yosemite NP and bicycled around Monterey Peninsula. Life goes by fast. If you don’t get out and do stuff when you can, the time will come when you can’t.

That ramen is one of my favorite quick lunches at home, particularly with an egg cracked in for flavour. I haven't taken it camping yet, but I think I will next time.

7:46 I hate being the "bad guy" who leaves annoying comments, but that campsite is actually somewhere you're not permitted to camp at, unless it's an emergency. You may not be aware, but there's a zone around Cradle Mountain called the "Cradle Day Use Area", which means that you're not permitted to spend a night or pitch a tent in that area unless it's an emergency. This zone ends down near the emergency "apple" shelter. I work in the area, so I really don't think it's a good idea to encourage camping in this spot.
A ranger actually came and spoke to us while we were there. We had a great chat and he said obviously it's discouraged, but certainly not against any rule.
After a good chat he obviously sized us up - our gear, our campsite and the other hikes we're doing in Tasmania. He said "You're good, have fun!".
It's not called Fury Gorge for nothing.

Thanks for sharing the video. Enjoyed it although it was so frustrating that you kept calling Barn Bluff, "Barnyard Bluff". Not sure where that came from??? It is also Waterfall Valley - not "Valley of the Waterfalls." I also agree with Peter Sherman's comment that free camping is not ok unless restricted by bad weather etc. I though they would have gone over that in your briefing. It is certainly a beautiful part of the world.

Great vid. Tassie is so beautiful. I find Vic & NSW are super paranoid about Liabilities. I find the other states less concerned about being fun police.

No you cant camp anywhere and that ranger must have liked you or you would have got booted back to Ronnie. . Frog flats is the only odd extra. And FYI I always wanted to camp in that spot. I know exactly the one. Its even got a little stream running to one side, in wet weather. Makes Swallowdale look like a caravan park
A ranger spoke to us while we were camped there actually - obviously they discourage it, but there is no rule against it and we didn't do anything wrong. He took stock of us, our gear, our experience and the general condition of the campsite and said "You guys are fine". So we're good.

One point, snakes are not poisonous as you can eat them, they are venomous as they deliver venom through a bite.
Yep. If it bites you and you die- it's venomous. If you bite it and you die - that's poisonous.
I'm guessing the wood deck walkways are to protect the ground underneath? Or is it swampy and muddy and it's there to keep you out of the muck?

If you read the meaning of venom, it's a poisonous substance.
@@thomasDLC correct, the venom is poisonous but a snake is not, it is venomous meaning it has and delivers venom through a bite.

Dan, would you please explain the mysterious need to place Katie's hind end in front of my view of some pretty spectacular country side??? Give her the camera if she wants to lead! We are here for the scenery and NOT posteriors!
I highly suggest that you go to Tasmania and make a better video. Send me the link, and I’ll be happy to watch it. Until then, I’ll just be happy that Dan took me to a part of the world I know very little about and may never see for myself.
Another reason could be documentation.
If it were just shots of scenery, well, I could pull bits of that off different web sites and patch together one heck of a great "adventure"!
