I have owned a 650GS for the last four years and there is nothing in this video that I can argue with. It is easy to ride, forgiving, and infinitely practical so much so that it has become my main mode of transport over the car. Everything from camping tours, city traffic, shopping, even carrying sacks of coal for the fire in the winter months. Being short, it is the only enduro i can ride comfortably and i have been able to pick this up on my own, even when fully loaded with my camping gear. Easy to work on too, I do all my own maintenance. The exception is valve clearances. And yes, not the most attractive of bikes, the silver paint on the engine has a habit of peeling off, other things to look for is an appetite for head bearings, (roughly every 15000 miles) and water pump wear, though mine is still ok at 48000 miles. Go for the 2004 onwards twin spark bikes.
Thanks for the comment and for participating in the conversation. Riders looking at this bike will appreciate your insight. Im glad you found the review accurate. I also welcome you to watch my review of the Sertao - one of the best bikes Ive owned with all the necessary uogrades for more serious adv touring. More 650 thumper adv bike reviews are in the making so I hope you consider subscribing and that I hear from you the near future. Cheers. Nik

Thank you for another great video. As a long time biker with almost 50 bikes owned in last 40 years of riding, i really appreciate how much research and ownership experience you build up before giving a review. Much better than these guys that go to a bikeshop(armed with latest go pro) and climb on a bike for 1st time and ride around the city streets blabbering rubbish with alot of swearing at cars and traffic. Keep up the excellent work!!
Precisely- I couldn't agree with you more. I can't handle another "review" with a kid talking into his helmet riding boring streets never before having ridden that actually bike being reviewed. I try to put more effort into the production and am always grateful to receive feedback. Thank you so much. It keeps me motivated since UA-cam does their best to remove all control and monetary incentive for independent, sponsor free channels like mine. Glad to have you. Ps, I've reviewed every competitor in this class including the Sertao in case you are comparing. Best Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I was deciding between the BMW and the KLR650. Your videos definitely helped me make up my mind. I look forward to a fuel injected KLR650. Thanks for great videos
Very pleasantly done thank you! I am a returner to motorcycling and have discovered off roading in the mountain regions of Spain where I now live. I had a guided tour in Cantabria a couple of days ago, renting a small 250 mutt motorcycle and remembered how great it felt to be on two wheels again going up mountain passes and steep slopes covered in scree. I am looking for a smallish bike, 400cc upwards, a Himalayan, or the F650, and found your channel. Thank you for the way you present, you come across as a quiet, respectful, thinking, compassionate man, and that resonates with me. You have another subscriber! Take care. Mark
Greetings Mark. Welcome back to the channel, and to motorcycling. If you ever find yourself in Southern California, I'd be happy to offer you a private tour. We are fortunate here. Ps, I've also reviewed the Himalayan albeit not very favorably. I've reviewed every 650 cc adv thumper on this channel so you have lots of comparisons. Good luck with your search. Cheers. Nik
I was considering buying an F650GS and stumbled upon this video while doing my research. You have covered every question i had. Great video. I will go back to the seller and make an offer. Thanks
Thanks for writing all the way from Germany. I am glad to hear it - My Sertao has only 2000 miles on the clock, so I look forward to riding it till the wheels fall off. Greetings from San Diego - I hope you all are staying safe. Cheers - Nik

You really covered the details on this bike, and I appreciate that. I'm on the east coast US but I have ridden in NM and CO on really gnarly trails and fire roads. Was looking at F650GS as a potential overlander/camping bike. Now I have to watch the Dakar/Sertao review though lol

What a great vid, 20 mins flew by. I've got G650GS, excellent bike. Loved hearing your personal experience of the GS along with the anecdotal stuff, Cheers!
Thanks again for the support. Yes, definitely and awesome line of the 650. Shame they got rid of it. I also reviewed the very cool Sertao and currently own the xChallenge, which is rare. All great capable bike.
I have a KLR650 Gen.1 which I consider to be the best of the KLR variants. It does everything without missing a beat, it's only downfall really the balance chain tensioner system but once that's replaced with the torsion spring mod. it is no longer an issue. I like simple, cheap motorcycling because then I can service my machine, and with it being cheap it means more trips because I have no overheads other than basic maintenance. Both these bikes will do this, but I will stay loyal to my "bullet proof" KLR even though both the Dakar and Sertao are head turners (I have been tempted) and somewhat prettier !!
Thanks for watching and for participating in the conversation. The new KLR still holds its place in the ADV community. I was just given the newest one to review by Kawasaki and that review is coming out this Saturday in case you are curious - it is a much improved bike albeit 50 pounds more than your version. I also reviewed the Sertao on this channel but own the lighter XChallenge - amazing motorcycle. Thanks for the support and happy new year. Nik

my 1st motorcycle was a YBR 125 cc, man i have good memories with that bike but i later upgraded to the GS650, the difference is crazy, i haven't used it enough to give a proper review but i am hoping to create new memories with it.
Enjoy it, it's a great bike with lots of possibilities. I look forward to hearing from you in future reviews. I also reviewed the related Serrtao and will be releasing a review of my BMW Xchallenge - basically a more capable version of the GS. Stay tuned.for that review coming in a few weeks - it's a rare bike and one of the best in the GS line. Cheers. Nik
That must have been such an awesome trip and adventure. I returned to Brazil with my wife (we met there year prior) and the experience was very tense honestly. I don't think I'd be able to relax with her on the back. The situation there overall is getting really tense, especially in places around the Amazon due to illegal logging and mining - the road you mentions I believe is referred as the Ghost Road - I was more west towards the Border with Peru. Ride safe and thanks for participating in the conversation. Cheers - Nik

Thanks for the great video. Sharp and honest analysis. Just bought a 2005 F650 GS model with low miles. Very happy with it on and off road. Watching your video was key in the decision process. Thought about the Sertao, but stayed with the F650 GS based on seat height. Keep it up.
Great to hear that this review was helpful and CONGRATS - you'll love the bike. I made a tutorial of how to improve the stock kickstand easily and cheaply albeit on the Sertao/Dakar It is basically the same motorcycle, to be very honest, aside form the aesthetics mostly noticeable in the front end. The rear subframe is entirely the same, dimension wise, so much so that luggage racks and carriers are for the most part interchangeable. I review the G650GS as well so please take a look at that to get more insights into their differences and similarities. I have reviewed most of the 650 ADV thumpers on this channel, so please take a look through my videos. I also still have in my garage waiting to get reviewed the Honda XR650L and KTM SXC 625, as well as the BMW XChallenge. Also, some great news, Kawasaki invited me to their press release and extended review of the new KLR being release later this year so stick around for that and please consider subscribing to be informed when these come out. Great video. I ride an Aprilia Pegaso and love it, dual carbs and all! The650cc Rotax engine has great power and torque. Can’t imagine why anyone would need anything more.
Thank you for watching and for adding your opinion about that increasingly rare motorcycle. I'm always curious about unique bikes like that and imagine the two carbs benefits torque and power delivery. I'm just not a fan of cleaning. But I would love to experience the EFI version the newer Picasso generation that I don't think was sold in the US. But the road texture is an awesome motorcycle. The next review will be of my Aprilia futura which has that same road text twin engine that was used in the RSV mile. And if you like these reviews please be sure to check out my other 650 adventure touring thumper motorcycle reviews, some of them are fairly hard to find bikes like the BMW x challenge and the ktm sxc 625. Great review. Both excellent bikes for their intended purpose. I'm contemplating entering the adventure bike world & being only 5' 7" with only a 29" inseam I'm leaning (no pun intended!) towards the F650GS.

Excellent. I also have s comparison of the KLR vs Dr, that's actually the highest watched video in this channel. I'm releasing a review of the hills XR 650 and the Royal Enfield Himalayan in a few weeks as well so I hope you consider subscribing.
I've owned 4 bmw autos, spent 2 grand total.. if bought new they would of been around 200 grand.. why I chose a KLR, I'm cheap!.. and I like reliability and parts when needed.. love my klr, & it's actually more comfortable as a ride for me
I agree - reliability is so important and the new KLR actually looks attractive as well. You can't beat reliability. very well said as F650 owner as well that has ridden KLRs they really are two different bikes. That said i completely agree the engineering put into the mid 2000s dual spark F650 is pretty much spot on. it has all the things you need and is still simple and efficient.
I was ready to sell my bmw f650gs 2004 model cause I wanted something with more power and a little big bigger cause I am 1.94 meters BUT I simply cant give it away.. this bike is so light, so easy to drive, so low fuel consumption that im thinking of keeping it and continue my trips with it all around the world...
I too have decided to sell the KLR and keep the GS - and every time I sat on the KLR I felt it was too bulky and not nearly as agile enough in comparison. Thanks for the comment. Cheers-Nik
you could get the dakar version of the GS, it's a little taller but also a little more expensive. the main difference to the regular gs is the suspension and the front wheel which is a 21 inch on the Dakar.
@@simonemmert9824 yes I know! I was aiming to buy the Dakar version but I couldn't find a single one that is being sold in a good condition so I bought the basic version...

Servicing the f650gs is a abit of a pain especially when the previous owner stripped half of the torx bolts but otherwise a fair review. I have both of these bikes (tengai) and a tt350. The bmw is complex the klr easy and tt ridiculously simple to work on.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours Hi Nik - So please do let me know, in the previous GS video you had a gripe of no fuel indicator. I'm thinking of getting a Sertao here in Australia, having been former owner of Vstrom (not enough suspension in rougher terain) and Africa Twin (way too big and heavy and I recently crashed it and broke my leg!). As I heal up, I am thinking of the GS650 Sertao, but often I end up doing 80% road to do 20% dirt. What's your take on Sertao's performance/noise sitting on 100/110 on road? One UA-cam review suggested neutral is an issue on the gearing - is it an issue you've encountered? Many thanks. My only concern is coming from twin, single may just been too underpowered on 100km/h run down highways at length....
Great video, thanks. I rode a BMW R80G/S from 82-89 in Africa & loved it. I've ridden road bikes since but next year want a Dakar or Sertao. I wanted to hear another opinion & delighted you like it so much. I'll buy one in 12 months.
Thanks for sharing! Currently looking for my first motorcycle and the F650GS was one of the candidates, you can pick one up for cheap here in Europe. Can't say the same for the KLRs though
Great video, fully agree with the description of the F650 GS. 2001 make owner here, visited with it 39 countries and gathered 172 thousand kilometers on it. My first and only bike, will never sell it.
It's an honor to have you. And I'm very happy to hear a person of your caliber agrees to my review. I have also owned and reviewed the Sertao and the cross challenge
I liked your video. I bought a 2004 two years ago. It's yellow as well. It was a bit neglected, and needed a lot of minor work. But it came with all the luggage, and both standard and low seats. I agree with all the good things you said. Fuel range is amazing. I get 390 k befor the fuel light comes on, and still have apx 4 litres left.

Most serious bike shops in America are traditionally closed on mondays. Sunday is race day...and folks need a day to get back home from travelling to race tracks.
That is some excellent information that I will admit I did not know - I do hope the shop folks still get. change to hit the track or the woods o the weekend. The f650gs single is probably one of the best designs that BMW ever made. It is a pity they stopped producing it in this stupid race for more horsepower. A lot of people still don't understand that a motorcycle needs 2 sturdy wheels and a simple reliable engine to serve all purposes. Now, why put electronics on bike to tame down its too powerful engine instead of developing a great and more reliable engine built with modern materials, I for one cannot understand.... I've owned my 650gs for over 14 years now without a single issue and to be honest nothing on the market convinced me to change. I think I'll keep riding it until no spare parts are available and then turn it into a collectible as it deserves. Hurray for this video, it is great to see these bikes are still properly appreciated after all these years. And by thw way, BMW...please begin building proper bikes again, you're losing all your serious GS customers...
Thanks for that comment and for participating in the conversation. I agree with you on all points. We need lighter, smaller, more reliable, simple motorcycle for serious ADV touring. A much better bike and a better competitor to the GS650 line of bikes. I hope you find it informative. Thanks for the support. Cheers - Nik ua-cam.com/video/ox5xeIEEjbE/v-deo.html
Completely agree with your opinions . I have a BMW 650 twin , and a Suzuki dr200 . I would much prefer my dr200 for off road stuff or riding the americas . My 650 is good for ‘ concession road ‘ type travelling ., I agree with your carb comment though .
It's great to see reviews and comparisons by someone that has real life experience and use of Adventure motorcycling. I personally feel that motorcycles have gotten ridiculously large on and off the road and therefore in both cases have lost the feeling of the machine being a extension of your body. I want to go back to something simpler and easier to maintenance.
Great to have you here, thanks for watching and for the support. I totally agree with you, and that's why I only tour with 650 thumpers. All my touring bikes like the XChallenge bmw or the ktm EXC are under 350 lb. I just finished a review of the newest klr so please tune in next weekend to see what that bike is all about. Thanks again. Nik

Thinking more and more lately about adventure / rtw riding and considering between DR650, F650GS, KLR650, V-Strom 650. Something around 600cc, simple and reliable but being only 170cm tall I guess it narrows it down. Thank you for amazing comparative review.
Glad to have you and glad you enjoyed the review and found it useful. I too am 172cm so seat height is important to me - the GS is by far the most accessible of the bunch. Please take a look at the DR vs KLR review I posted a few months back for some more information about this class. I am finishing up a review of the BMW Sertao. -probably the best of the bunch, so please consider subscribing to be notified when that comes out. Great to have you here! Cheers - Nik
Exciting news about the new KLR eh?! I look forward to getting my hand s on one of em. I hope you also had the chance to watch my G650GS Sertao Review - one of my favorite motorcycles for sure. @@pegasusmotorcycletours the new KLR 650 is a great bike, and you're right about the military paint scheme being too much outside of the US. I've been to Mexico twice and North Africa once. Some places (maybe even most places) outside CONUS being military causes unwanted attention
Thank you for watching. If you like the GS 650 line, take a look at my playlist to see my review of the Serrtao, previously the Dakar version. Still one of the best looking bikes in this class. Cheers. Nik
Thank you for this. I have the F650gs Dakar and also this disease where I am always wanting to upgrade and ride bigger, newer bikes, even though I have no real reason to justify the expense. This will help me control that urge and stick with my F650 for a while longer...maybe. It's the Harley rider in me I think that is the cause of such urges.
Hey - nothing wrong with satisfying an urge like that. I also have the same problem, and an additional one in living in such a rich market as is Southern California where one can find the best deals on even the rarest of motorcycles fairly often (just picked up a Honda NC700X 15 minutes ago actually). I am always on the market searching for the next thing - if you liked this bike, please consider subscribing to get notified when the next review is release next week - it is of your bike, just newer - the Sertao (but watch at your own risk cause it might tickle that itch again) It's such a great bike. And after that is another 650 which is rare and is the bike that made me sell the Sertao which I was sure I'd be keeping. I'll keep that a surprise - you'll have to tune in and watch the Sertao review till the end to see what bike I am talking about (hint -also a BMW) Welcome to the channel and hope to hear form you then! - Nik
@@scottrodcustoms1 I would suggest you keep an eye on the market and be ready to pull the trigger if a Sertao emerges for a good price, since at the moment you would be able to get just as much money for your Dakar (one I just saw last week was listed at $5.5, and the guy won't budge - that's a price of the Sertao.) So no need to loose money if you are flexible. In any case glad to have you here!
Loved your review! Been riding for years. Try filtering your gas through a chamois in questionable areas. Also, you could put an aviation oat(outside air temperature gauge) through your windscreen for temp.
So I'm currently looking to get an adventure bike and the ones I have my mind set on are the KLR650, F650GS, and the DR650, all the DR 650's around me in Wyoming including neighboring states like Co. Ut. and Idaho have no DR650's on the used market, at least not that I can find. My question for you great people on here is how many miles is too much for a 2007 BMW F650GS Dakar, and a Gen 1 KLR650 year 2000? I absolutely love the look of the Gen 1, I'm not crazy about how the F650GS's look but I can always put my spin on it!
I always stay below 20k on my thumper purchases. It's a single cylinder so the life span isn't as long as on other bikes. And these are often used in harsh conditions. So that's my heuristic but it all depends on the owner and maintenance.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I ended up going with a different bike and while watching your last video at the end you said you just bought a BMW X challenge and I just about spit my drink all over my laptop, for that is the bike I ended up getting lol!!!! 2007 BMW G650 X Challenge with 6,013 miles, and a Race Tech G3 Rear shock. Only issue is the ABS sensor is bad so the ABS light stays on and I am unable to turn the ABS off.
@@lancemartin7584 awesome choice. They hold their value. I have yet to review my x. What an awesome bike. It compares directly to my newest purchase this week if the KTM 690 Enduro r. Enjoy your new ride.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I'm interested to see what you end up doing with your Xchallenge. I need to find a way to lower the bike a bit. I was thinking of getting a second set of wheels for it, 19/17 to make it a bit more manageable for me. I can't find a lower concepts seat anywhere. Any suggestions?
also please get chain lube auto kits / scotoiler. changes the life of chains and sprocket x 5 longer and saves money by ton on stupid lube sparays and cleaning. continuous lubing increases mech effiency
I have a choice and because of my age above 60 I was wondering what would you buy as your last bike purchase in your life. a 2003 BMW f650gs with 12,000 miles or a 2022 KLR 650 abs with 6,000 miles for 2,000 more? I will do 70% road 30% mountain back road coal mining roads but very few single tracks. I'm 6ft 185lbs and will do 50% road riding with 100LB pasenger. I will be doing 100% maintenance inc tire tube changes. I will average 6,000 miles per year total. thank you so much for your reply.
I would say go with the newer bike. 20 years is a good amount of time on a motorcycle. The killer will meet your needs but the suspension might be a little too soft for two up riding. I've reviewed the new KLR and you can see that in my playlist. Good luck and safe travels and if I can be of any assistance regarding any trips, please don't hesitate to ask. Last year we launched our Eastern Sierra tour which is amazing, but I also do Southern California tours as well as tours of the Southwest starting and ending in Las Vegas. A must for any Adventure touring Rider. Safe travels
From what I gather the GS is better suited for ticking off highway miles than the KLR, along with it's astounding MPG. However the KLR redeems itself with rugged simplicity and immensely cheaper parts when repairs are required. I'd take the KLR anytime off road, the GS seems like too nice of a bike to abuse. Just my 2 cents because I'm currently in the market for a dual sport and these two are in the running-it's simply a matter of which one I can get a better deal on. I plan on mainly blacktops and gravel roads with some city commuting, so perhaps a GS will suit me better.
That would be a correct assessment. The GS comes with more standard features such as switchable aBS and heated grips, but it's more expensive to equip and own. The KLR has been around for a long time and will never let you down, although both motors are iconic. The GS is more powerful though and one can easily fell it. It is also lower and easier to handle cause of the weight distribution. Since you are looking, go through my motorcycle review playlist cause I have numerous 650 and smaller thumper ADV bike reviews, including the amazing G650GS Sertao - one of my favorite motorcycles. If you enjoyed this I invite you to definitely take a look at my KLR review - It claims to be the most complete review on UA-cam and portray footage I shot from my 40k miles tour across North America and Europe. @@pegasusmotorcycletours Same back to you and thank you. I ended up finding a 2018 KLR with only 5k on the clock which the PO had fitted with heated grips and Tusk engine guard. I haven't really gone off road yet-but it's great riding through and over construction sites and gravel roads knowing the KLR was made to go wherever you like in most cases. The most surprising thing for me is how comfortable it is, especially with the VStream aftermarket tall windshield I just added. It's definitely a simple, rugged no frills bike. I'm thinking perhaps next year or so I'll trade in while the bike still has resale value to get the new version-or perhaps a GS. For now, I'm happy!
I agree completely that the motor w/the FI makes these bikes, the rear factory rack is silly, and also that it's absurd to not have a fuel gauge. I have an '05 Dakar that I have swapped the suspension (KTM White Power front, HyperPro rear), 18" rear rim, and a proper headlight, plus an aftermarket saddle and some bar risers, really make the bike so much more fun and safe to ride on backcountry roads. I would love an updated model with the Rotax, a lightweight frame, real suspension, a similar small but useful fairing and a solid gauge package. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks for being here and for participating in the conversation. That sounds like a killer bike you got there. I just picked up a competitor KTM 625 - amazing WP suspension with over 11 inches of travel (12.6 in the rear). Very much looking forward to what it can do. The F650GS and the F650 Funduro are two different bikes. You've got a GS there. The Funduro has different plastics for sure, and was an earlier carbureted model that didn't have some features the GS has.
Thanks for clarifying - that is true, they are two different bikes, and there were many more models of these varients than I listed, but my understanding was that the "F" in all stands for Funduro, and the GS stands for Gelande/Strasse. I appreciate the clarification.

Yes, they should for the most part since the changes were largely aesthetic. This was a 2003. Next model switched from F to G, bit for a year or two BMW continued with the F650GS even though it was an 800cc twin. Silly in my opinion.

I plan to buy f650 2012 as daily commuter..i live in SE Asia where the road is pretty much crap in some place. How is the suspension comfort for bumpy road? I currently own Honda CRF250. Comfortable bike but 250cc is too underpowered when I got into the highway. Considering upgrade to f650gs 2012. They have excellent price compared to 1200 and 1250
Yes, I agree that abroad in such places and most of Latin America this bike is the ideal choice. The 1200s are too big, heavy and expensive and flashy (unsafe). I would never consider riding such a flashy bike down through places like Brazil or Mexico at the moment due to security issues. I had a 650 GS for about 3 weeks, until i got hit on it and ended up selling what was left after the accident. I did not spend much to buy it and i really was not too sad to see the last of it because it was way too small for me. They are really tiny compared to the KLR and DR.
They are definitely lower, and then that's why they feel smaller. The seat height makes a big difference. If you prefer a toddler bike, check out my review of the honda xr650l. BMW also released the X challenge from the 650 line, which is 350 pounds for the same engine. And a lot more travel. I have also reviewed the 650gs sertao which is taller. Thanks for watching.
No toddler bikes for me, thx. I like tall 650 thumpers and I have owned alot of them at one time or another... the aforementioned GS, a KLR, XR and DR and I rode a 1991 600 XT extensively in northern Thailand over the course of 3 years, back in my younger days. @@pegasusmotorcycletours
Thank you, good video. One point I was wondering, what is the top speed on a freeway, you touched on that more or less saying 80 mph - is that correct? It's faster than the KLR that way?
To speed is close to 120 but honestly anything above 100 is sketchy because the 21 front typically with knobbies start to make the front feel too light and loose for comfort. The Beemer is definitely pepper and more responsive, and more stable at speed since it has a smaller front wheel.
Thanks for the great video. I am new to riding and have wanted the BMW GS for a number of years. Curious, what year is the 650 that you are reviewing here? I find the oil change on the earlier models to be a bit wanky. I am looking for a 2009 and up. Peace and safe travels.

superb review. You speak very clearly and to the point, a pleasure to learn listening to you. I'm on an edge between v strom 650 and f650gs. Somewhat leaning towards the gs, less weight and simplicity of a single is attractive, though v stroms are bulletproof in many ways... How is the f650gs to work on yourself? Parts not too expensive? thanks
Thank you for that, and thanks for being here. I've never owned the 650 Vstrom but have owned (the hell out of) two 1000s. It is an excellent motorcycle and actually, my first review wo this channel was a very detailed one of the Vstrom 1000. If you haven't seen it I would recommend it highly since it is my second most popular review.I promises you will learn a lot of useful info about the bike even if you are determined to ge the smaller brother, since a lot of the recommendations and info translates. As for which I would choose between the Suzuki and BMW - the Suzuki is definitely cheaper to upkeep, and aftermarket parts are easier to locate since they are more numerous, so if you are hoping to add a bunch of aftermarket parts on it, probably go with the Suzuki. But the GS is also proven, also bulletproof, and simple, so working on it is not a real challenge - and you need not bring it to the dealer really if you have medium level shop skills. In any case I always opt out for the simple bike and the GS is definitely more dirt capable. Also, the ABS and heated grips are. nice feature to have. And you watch the Suzuki review you will realize that I am always for getting the 1000 instead of the 650 just because its so much more bike. PS: I also reviewed the G650GS Sertao, the more dirt oriented version of the650 - that has been one of my favorite bikes so please be sure to check it out. There are so many great contenders I the single 650 ADV category, and I also review the DR650 by Suzuki and the KLR by Kawasaki. Out of all of these, the Sertao (formally the Dakar) is my favorite. I hope this helps. Cheers - Nik

Great video thank you! I'm looking at getting my first road bike and am really interested in the F650 GS. Perhaps its slightly biased by the fact my dad and uncles have all had the R1200/1250 GS for as long as I can remember. My only concern is that it might be a bit small as I've read a few comments of people having this issues. At 6'3 would you still recommend?
Thanks for watching. I've reviewed other bikes from the gs line as well as nearly everything other competidor in the 650 line. The tallest of them is on the honda xr650L. Have you considered the 800/850 gs? Cheers. Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I've ridden the xr650r and really enjoyed it, but I recently moved to the city for university and wanted something solid for commuting purposes as well as adv riding. The 800 gs would be ideal, but its slightly out of my budget and not permitted in Australia on your learners unfortunately. I think I'll go with the f650gs. Thanks again Nik
It is not unfortunately. There are rising links you can instal for the rear but the front is limited to the fork length. Adjusting only one height will negatively affect the geometry and ride quality.
Hi there. Just recently came across your channel. Congrats 👏👏 good content, fluid speech, very enjoyable to watch. I'm planning on buying my first bike and the Bmw F650gs is on my short list (not too tall, not too heavy and versatile). I found a 2002 apparently in good shape (new chain, tires, brakes, original top and side cases) but with 85000km 😬😬 the owner asks 1500€. In your opinion would it be a good deal or should I search for one with lower mileage knowing that the prices are almost double for one with 40/50000km? I appreciate your input. ✌️
Hi CJ, and welcome to my channel. I appreciate your participation in this community with your question and am glad you found the video valuable. If you liked this one, I strongly urge you to look at my BMW Sertao review - you'll find more relevant info about this GS line. As for that specific bike, I'd say it has a bit too many KM for my taste. It is a single cylinder 650 mind you so the life of these engines is not typically as long as other multi cylinder engines, and besides that it is 20years old now. Save up another grand and look for something with fewer miles - that would be my suggestion. Other factors do come into play such as how many owners the bike had, service records, age and experience of owner, etc. But I simply don't buy singles with more than 15k miles. At that point you are referencing they usually require top end work, clearance checks, gasket replacements, fell line and cable replacements, etc etc etc. I don't know where you are or how rich the market there is, but her ein Southern California 3k dollars buys a lot of bike now a days. Good luck in your search.I plan to put a video together about how to search for and evaluate/buy a used motorcycle so please consider subscribing cause I think that will be helpful for you. I also hope to hear from you when the next 3 rival 65 reviews drop (Honda XR650L, KTM SXC625, and BMW Xchallenge) and if you haven't seen my other 650 reviews already live, please do for some competition. Cheers - Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours hi Nik thanks for the reply. I'm in Europe, in Switzerland to be precise. Here the prices aren't as sweet as in the US 😁 and the GS650 apparently really holds its value. Under 15k miles prices start at 4000 + dollars or even more for the Dakar/Sertão versions 😬 the twin cylinder version starts at roughly the same price. What interested me in these bikes is the fact that they are not too tall and have a low center of gravity which I suppose would be ideal being an inexperienced rider. But as a beginner I was looking for something not too expensive. I've ridden 500cc naked bikes but I don't like the riding position and lack of comfort. That's why I turned myself towards the trail bikes. I'll have to try to test ride a couple, maybe it will help make up my mind. Keep up the good work, really enjoy your channel, it's among my favourites ✌️

I'm looking at some F650GS's now. Nice bikes. I'm 5'9". What do you think the maximum rider height is to be to still be comfortable on a long trip on a F650GS? It's one thing to be standing on the pegs a lot, but quite another to be seated on the highway for hours at a time.

Also, I hope you find this KLR specific review more helpful. ua-cam.com/video/KMVxuvy7A74/v-deo.html Glad to have you here - thanks for participating in the conversation. Great Bike!!! Great Review!!, Awesome Channel!!. I own a BMW F650gs 2000, same colour. I Love the bike and enjoy every ride. At the present, got the radiator hit by a little road stone and had to remove to fix it. Haven't found any one here in New Zealand to do it so I doing it myself as everything. Just wondering to know why the hell dual sport adventure bikes and dirt bikes come without a radiator guard, is my complaint to every motorcycle brand on this genres. Keep the shine side up Nik. 👍
Thanks much! That is sad to hear honestly - and can imagine how frustrating it must be. If it's a small leak I noticed anew product in a tube in my local auto parts store by the register which is supposed to plug that. There are also epoxies that you combine that harden to plug smaller holes. Mythbusters - the popular American TV show did an episode on the myth of putting eggs into the radiator - I won't spoil the concussion for you but wish you good luck with the repair. Thanks for the support - please consider tuning in on Saturday for a premier of the review of the DRZ400 at noon.
Exciting news about the new KLR eh?! I look forward to getting my hand s on one of em. I'm looking into getting the GS's cousin, the F650 CS (Scarver). They're super cheap and seem to be perfect for commuting and a bit of weekend fun. They have the same engine as the GS. Is there anything in particular I should check (like a visible/audible fault) when looking to buy?
Yeah, that's Avery interesting bike and you don't see them often on the road. Less capable in dirt but could still do some easy fire roads. How to purchase used is the next video in line - there are. Aton of little tell tale signs to look out for - please stay tuned. My main suggestion for you for now before that video comes out is to avoid any bike that's been crashed (the old, laid it down in the driveway story) - no salvage title bikes, and preferably try to look at bikes sold form original owners.

Thank you for being here. I am all about the weight savings but Australia has a lot of straight and fast roads, so in this case it's up to you since all of these are not uncommon there and would be easy to service. If you are planning mostly road riding and easy dirt, go with the faster, more powerful bike. If it were the Alps, I'd go lighter, but in the outback a big bike is less of a burden and more usable. Although I love Hondas (three In the garage ATM including one form the 70s and a XR650L. -review coming soon), the BMW packs more tech and is newer so they are not real competitors, if you have the choice. Best of luck and please get in touch after your trip - I'd be very curious to hear what you go with and how it went. Cheers. -Nik

The tubeless system is not actually tubeless . The smaller inter tube is a tube that has to hold high pressure air thats around 120 psi . If you get a nail it can puncher that inter tube just like the nail can puncher a regular tube . If it punchers the small inter tube and you don't have a extra tube then once you fix the hole in the tire the smaller inter tube will no longer be putting pressure on the inside of the tire to keep it against the rim and and as your riding the tire will go flat again and it can also come off the rim , so don't think that you can just plug the tire and put air back in it . You may think that well there is a lot of space between the tire and the inter smaller tube , which there is , but once the tire loses air from the puncher the nail is still in there and once the tire makes a few rotation with low air pressure the nail can easily puncture the inter smaller tube and your shit out of luck if your not carrying a regular tube . The on;y good thing about the system is you might get lucky and not puncher the smaller high pressure tube and you can run on lower tire pressure . I'm not saying anything bad about the system I'm just saying there is still a tube with air in it and there is a chance it can be punctured also so just carry a extra tube just in case .
Thanks for taking the time to watch and educate. I appreciate it. I am aware of the tubeless system, I talk about it more in detail in my review of the GS650 Sretao, but thank you very much for clarifying here. Cheers. Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I have the sertao and I'm going to add the tubeless system . I wish you would have compared the sertao with the klr . The sertao has the 21 inch front tire and is a lot better off road . The gas under the seat on the sertao vs that big tank up high on the klr is like night and day on the smaller trails . The sertao and the f650 feels more like the DR 650 or the KLX 650 c on the tighter trail . You are really going to like the Sertao .
@@Sertao2013 Thanks for watching. Look through my playlist, I have already reviewed my Serrtao. You are right, I love that bike. The next review is of the rarer G650xChallenge, the lightest version of this 650 line. Please consider subscribing to get notified when that come south. Cheers.
The BMW’s engine with the KLR’s suspension, front wheel and rack would go a long way towards a decent bike. That’s a clue to how I’m designing my own 1998 CCM Dakar inspired dual sport/adventure bike that addresses many of the deficiencies you’ve highlighted here, and more. Add a lighter frame (with integral oil tank), plus an extra 5-10bhp via cam and inlet work, and lose the EFI in favour of a traditional carburettor and high mounted DNA air filter, plus the gearing you favour, and we’ve essentially got what the BMW should be, in my humble opinion. Thank you for sharing your findings here. They’ve confirmed my own, and helped convince me my plans are on the right tract. Ride safe.
That sounds super exciting - please keep me posted with the process - I'd love to see the end result. Also, please consider subscribing to be notified when the next reviews are published soon - the next one in particular will interest you since it reviews the G650GS Sertao - the more dirt oriented version of this BMW that is a better comparison to the KLR. Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting Cheers. Thank you for your words and updates. Will look out for your next vids. I’m already subscribed and hope YT keeps me posted. I’m presently at the parts weighing stage. Many of my choices are based upon weight saving. But because I’m also building on a limited budget, I’m looking at as many parts I can scavenge from the cheap bucket. This has lead me to check out standard silencers from various bikes (often discarded in great condition due to weight, performance suppression and ugliness), with the intention of cutting them up to remove their excess weight and performance strangling features. The process has turned up some interesting surprises. The Yamaha system with a valve is as heavy as a house!! And after an hour of carefully chopping all the welds of the early single stainless F650GS silencer with a 1mm cutting wheel, the damned thing still won’t come apart! But the OEM Suzuki GSXR1000 can condemned by owners as UGLY, is already only 3kgs and barely restricted. I might get around to blogging this process at some point.
@@G58 If you are so keen on shaving pounds but like the 650 GS line - have you looked into the G650X line - I presently own the XChallenge - Same 650 single, just 12 inches of suspension travlel at 350lb - amazing bike and one heck of a choice for the perfect ADV machine. Hello I can't compare but I'm 29 years old and I'm planning to mainly drive downtown and do occasional round trip rides around 200km. 2018 lambretta v200 scooter 310mile 2100$ vs 2006 bmw f650gs dakar black 15000 mile 2400$ I'm thinking about. What would be a good choice? And I'm a beginner I can't do maintenance on my own and I don't have a garage. ps. My height is 172cm and im in south korea
Great video, have one 2004 the same colour. Would you please let me know where I can get all equipment needed for repair tire, change oil....all you would recommend for longer trip. thank you. Bob Popelka
Greetings bob. Thanks for watching. If you are interested in how it compares to the new klr, I just released a review two weekends ago of the 2022 KLR 650. As for your other question, I get all my gear tools and equipment at a local motorcycle supply shop. By the way you spell color, am I correct to assume you live in uk?
Also, to your other question regarding the gear I take on longer trips, I will make a longer more inclusive video about that topic soon, but in the meantime in my newest KLR 2022 review, I review the luggage and everything that I take in it. So you'll get some great ideas of all the bare essential tools and equipment you need even for a weekend trip. For any other advice or assistance or consulting service, please visit my website to see all that I offer in that regard. Thanks again for reaching out.
One more question... given the choice would you recommend/go with the post 2007 F650GS with the parallel Twin 800 or the previous F600GS single piston 650. I am too short for the G650 GS unfortunately... Could you give me your thoughts please?
Thanks for the questions. The 650 thumper sits lower and is lighter. I'm 5.8 and appreciate the lower seat height. It has plenty of power, bit ofcourse the two. Is smoother. So I'd say stick with either the f650gs until 2003, and g650gf thumper later on. I've also owned that rares ga 640 version title XChallenge. That's the best offroader yet. Stay tuned for that review.

Hi there. Glad you found it useful. I am 5.8, 170 lb. I think you would find the GS bit to cramped for your needs. The KLR sits 5 inches higher and I am tippy toes on it. I'm looking at these 2 bikes. 06 650GS vs similar KLR650. I know these aren't meant for highway riding. but how which is better on highway for those times I need to get on highway? Thanks!
Actually, I have to correct you. These bikes are much more at home riding 70mph, than on difficult dirt riding 15mph. These are both meant for long distance touring, mostly highway with some dirt road capability. But they are predominantly street oriented, I'd say about 70/30%. Both have fairings that guide air away and keep the bike stable at speed, and both have windscreens for the same reason. I would recommend a cramp buster for the throttle to make the long stretches easier.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours perfect. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks! Out of the two, which would you prefer riding on asphalt?

Ps, I've also reviewed the Himalayan albeit not very favorably. I've reviewed every 650 cc adv thumper on this channel so you have lots of comparisons. Good luck with your search. Cheers. Nik

Great to hear it was helpful for you.
I'm driving still a 2003 F650GS in germany and I'm still impressed . The Rotax engine ist so reliable and after all the years everything ist finde.👍

Nik

Enjoy it, it's a great bike with lots of possibilities. I look forward to hearing from you in future reviews. I also reviewed the related Serrtao and will be releasing a review of my BMW Xchallenge - basically a more capable version of the GS. Great Video mate. Love Brazil, I completed the BR-319 in a KLR with my wife (no others bikes/cars) it was quite the adventure!!

The next review will be of my Aprilia futura which has that same road text twin engine that was used in the RSV mile. very well said as F650 owner as well that has ridden KLRs they really are two different bikes. That said i completely agree the engineering put into the mid 2000s dual spark F650 is pretty much spot on. it has all the things you need and is still simple and efficient.
Yes. I just picked up an f800gt and that thing gets 60plus mpg from a dual cylinder sport touring bike. Very efficient engine.
Cheers-Nik
Hey bro, is there any site to get parts for repairs? I’m struggling to find them for the right price, thanks a lot
you could get the dakar version of the GS, it's a little taller but also a little more expensive. the main difference to the regular gs is the suspension and the front wheel which is a 21 inch on the Dakar.
@@simonemmert9824 yes I know! I was aiming to buy the Dakar version but I couldn't find a single one that is being sold in a good condition so I bought the basic version...

Most serious bike shops in America are traditionally closed on mondays. Sunday is race day...and folks need a day to get back home from travelling to race tracks.

I've seen this video, ate least 3 times, it is so rich in information and experiences that there's always something to catch each time. And thanks to it i'm a proud owner of a F650GS (the injection made me choose the BMW, but I would like to drive a KLR someday).
Keep up the good work

Obrigado para teu apoio - and thank you for being here and for the kind words. I am happy to hear this video helped you make a decision you seem happy with (and I hope you watched my review of the BMW Sertao as well since they are related). As for the KLR, the new one just announced will have EFI - so it is much improved and fairly attractive - everyone is excited about it, as am I.
Stay tuned for that review and ride safe - thanks again - Nik

Completely agree with your opinions . I have a BMW 650 twin , and a Suzuki dr200 . I would much prefer my dr200 for off road stuff or riding the americas . My 650 is good for ‘ concession road ‘ type travelling ., I agree with your carb comment though .
Thanks for watching. Glad you found the review accurate. Thanks for participating in the conversation as well. Cheers. Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours the new KLR 650 is a great bike, and you're right about the military paint scheme being too much outside of the US. I've been to Mexico twice and North Africa once. Some places (maybe even most places) outside CONUS being military causes unwanted attention
This is one of the best reviews I’ve seen.
Glad you found your time well invested. Cheers. Nik
I think that yellow gs650F is the best looking version nice sleek headlight etc
- Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I would normally agree, but I don't ride enough to financially justify constantly upgrading. I will check your other vids!
@@scottrodcustoms1 offerup.com/item/detail/924039010/
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I guess I'm confused as to why I'd want to sell a Dakar for a Sertao? Isn't it basically the same bike?
you can remove the catalytic conveter in the tail pipe freeing up airflow and weight, after 5 years when it expires anyway and use space for storage.
Thanks for watching that awesome tip. How does ot effect the noise?
you can convert the wheels to tubeless with kits. done it. works gret. ive done 125 000 km in Southern Africa and Namibia on my F650 gs 2003 model.
Wow that would be one hecho of a trip!
Loved your review! Been riding for years. Try filtering your gas through a chamois in questionable areas. Also, you could put an aviation oat(outside air temperature gauge) through your windscreen for temp.
Thanks for watching and for those awesome tips. Very helpful advice. Much appreciated.
rim kits will allow you to run at zero psi . no rim damage or need for inner tubes. nuetech tyre kits tubeless kits
I've had those and loved em.
I've heard good things. Thanks for the rec.
Amazing scenery there. ua-cam.com/video/KMVxuvy7A74/v-deo.html

Love the video, thanks!! Can you please tell me what year the beauty BMW is? I am looking at a 2010 and wondering if all your comments apply? Thanks

Thanks again Nik
is it possible to increase the ground clearance of the bmw f 650 gs? Any king of modification that is budget friendly.

So how does the Sertao compare to the Dakar? I have a 2000 F650GS Dakar and I love this bike.
Same bike, just updated livery.
I'm 5.8 and found this bike very comfortable and manageable. I think you will too.

Great video. I'm currently planning a solo trip across Australia and weighing up the 650 and 800 gs as well as the transalp. Any thoughts?

Ride safe.

What's a better engine in f650gs dakar rotax or twin spark And what's the difference
I wanna say all rotex had the twin spark for a more efficient, cleaner burn. I have not heard anything bad about the newer Rotax assembled in China.

Hi there. Glad you found it useful. I am 5.8, 170 lb. I think you would find the GS bit to cramped for your needs. The KLR sits 5 inches higher and I am tippy toes on it. The Sertao or Dakar version is a bit taller than the regular GS, but the controls still feel more cramped than on a KLR. Good luck!

I don't see myself doing any technical dirt riding except rather flat unpaved roads. It would be a longer road journey then the 5 miles I might get riding in dirt/unpaved areas
Greetings. I hope all is well with you and yours in 2022. I wanted to let you know that I released a comprehensive review of the newest KLR in case you might be interested. A much better bike and a better competitor to the GS650 line of bikes. I hope you find it informative. Thanks for the support. Cheers - Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours I purchased a gs650 soon after review you had. Very happy with it
Your reviews are so good sir , i have a doubt , i have the opportunity of buying a 650 sertao 2013 (14k km) and a 650 2008 lime yours (20k km) , wich one would you advice me to buy ?
Definitely the Sertao - it's more capable, more advanced, easier to sell, rarer, more valuable, less miles, newer, etc. Easy choice - it's a keeper too. Thanks for being here.
Exciting news about the new KLR eh?! I look forward to getting my hand s on one of em. I hope you also had the chance to watch my G650GS Sertao Review - one of my favorite motorcycles for sure. PS: A new review is premiering today, in about half an hour at noon - it is a review of the KLR's competitor, the Suzuki DRZ400 in case you've considered a much lighter and much more dirt capable bike with similar power output. I hope to see you there. Cheers - Nik ua-cam.com/video/PAE6Yx7a5kA/v-deo.html

Hi don't you have the bmw dakar, which is the model before the sertao in that countries?
We have both models in the US, but both are fairly uncommon on the road. I had and have reviewed the Sertao, so please take a look at that video - it was my favorite motorcycle in the 650 ADV class, until I found another rare BMW which is.... well, please watch the review :) Thanks for bein here.
