75 years old. Bought a new K L R in 2017 . First trip, i left Cedar City, Ut. at 9 am pulled into Butte, Montana at sundown. 725 miles no big deal! Toured Montana, Idaho and Nevada. Probably skip Nevada next time. Next trip through Wyoming, So. Dakota and Colorado. 2.trips , 5500 miles, Zero problems GREAT BIKE!

Wow - that sounds like a heck of a trip - yup, 200 miles was my daily average on the KLR - it did it all without any issues. Gotto love a machine that's that reliable. Thanks for participating I the conversation - 4 more reviews are coming up of other bikes in the 650 class (I released a video today about what's coming in 2021) so please consider subscribing to be informed when they come out. Also, please be sure to check out the related BMW Sertao review - comparable bike just more capable. I'd consider it over the F650GS. I also own a G650XChallenge - excellent bike but more dirt oriented. Cheers - Nik

PS: A new review is premiering today, in an hour at noon - it is a review of the KLR's competitor, the Suzuki DRZ400 in case you've considered a much lighter and much more dirt capable bike with similar power output. I hope to see you there. Cheers - Nik ua-cam.com/video/PAE6Yx7a5kA/v-deo.html

Great channel. I just bought my first Gen 1 KLR 650, a 2004 with 9.5k on it. The bike was garaged for two years, I put a new battery and rode it 75 miles back home from Colorado Springs to Denver on the highway with no issues. I'm really looking forward to new adventures on my new to me "Red Pig". Today I took it apart, geave it a bath, cleaned the carb, replaced a cooling fan relay and fuses, oil and filter change, replaced the cluth cable and adjuster, all in a day, I was easy to work and in a way, satisfying.
Everything you said about this motorcycle in my very short ownership holds true, I'm also coming from a BMW F650 (sold last week) and I have to tell you that I noticed the less vibration and the smoother shifting and I was blowned away by it. Again, great channel with valuable content. Thanks Nik.

@@brianslack7111 In my experience, the engine can take it just fine, but the suspension may not depending on the weight of the riders. My girlfriend and I are pretty average weight (for Americans lol) and I'm a fairly short guy and can flat foot really easy with both of us on the bike, whereas I'm normally on my tippy toes. If you upgrade the suspension, or if you're both pretty well south of 150 lbs. it should be fine though.

Without a doubt, the most intelligent, detailed and candid review of any motorbike that I have ever had the pleasure of watching and listening to on youtube... Just an absolute ton of accessible information that I am positive I will benefit from should I decide to pick up a new KLR650. Think Kawasaki would be well-served to have you on their payroll to accompany the rollout of their new and improved bike, as they release it around the world. Your real world knowledge and experiences are irreplaceable and the accompanying photos and videos were just breath-taking - makes you want to start planning a trip tomorrow! Enjoyed listening to every second of your review.

My 2009 klr was NavyThoma8s until I got it in 2012 . He had most of the main things needed done already done . I just added and kept it up . I was in a very bad car accident in 89 and left me handicapped. It takes me places places where I would not be able to go affordable. It is a great bike for my speed also . It has ammo cans on the rear and front along with a trunk off of a Honda gold wing being parted out . It just fit well . With a paint job . It looks ok .

Yep, that neutral light. I have removed my kickstand switch so that won't be an issue. I grew up on older bikes without the switch so it's not a big deal. The more things I can eliminate the less can go wrong. KLR is a great bike. I had the voltage regulator go out once. The bike is setup to still run the ignition without it. No lights and a dead battery, but it can be pop started and run. Enough to get home or a town. Thanks for the video!

@@pegasusmotorcycletours I have considered the DRZ, but the lack of customization/committing capability has been a mild deterrent. I have ridden them in the past, and the bike is a blast off road. It feels more limited than the KLR in most aspects on road, but I am potentially biased as a KLR owner.
The new KLR is quite exciting. At first, I had been hoping for a bit more modernization in the redesign. Upon further reflection, this could have somewhat removed the soul of the original KLR from the 3rd Gen if taken too far, so I am oddly pleased with what I have seen thus far. At the price point offered for the different trim levels, all should be well! I forsee one in my garage beside my Harley FLHR, and I greatly look forward to passing my 09 on to my nephew in the next year or two.

Loved the bit where your wife says, "I'm going to cry, I think", Classic. I keep coming back to the KLR as the choice for my next bike, for the longer rides (as much dirt as possible). I'm a return trail bike lover, coming back after 30yrs. Having done 18mths on a KLX250 & then KLX 300 mostly, relearning how to drop a bike and not hurt too much. Now prepping a KLX400e and travel gear for more weekend & longer trips, but will probably add something with more comfort and carrying capacity while maintaining a respectable dirt heritage. Love the design of the Sertao and its looks or the ruggedness of the DR, but the KLR is a great compromise with its own advantages and possibilities for improvement with a bit of love, & cash.
    Love your work....from down under.

Yes, that tour of Montenegro did the trick. We were engaged not a month after being together, 4 of those days spent riding the Balkan. My mother comes from exactly that village, so I took Jackie to see how she reacts to the woods whence my family comes. Roots are important especially once one leaves home for a distant land and marries into a third culture. I'm preparing a tour of the Balkans and some information is on The website, in case you feel up for an unforgettable adventure ;) Thanks for watching and great to hear you're back at it and building up your skills. The KLR is certainly one of the best compromises on the budget. I'd take it anywhere. Currently though I'm on the KTM 790. I'm taking a small group of clients to the Eastern Sierras this October so please stay tuned for those highlights. Cheers and Greetings from San Diego.

It’s got 2600 miles on it,dark red with black moto,forks,swing-arm,rims.Looks like sw-motech bars and skidplate on it.
Only thing I’ve done is an upgraded doo hick/torsion spring and bob thermo.
I like the bike, the friction zone in the clutch is a bit short, doesn’t engage until the lever is almost completely released, even with free play adjustment.
Other than that oddity,It’s a nice dirt road/back road cruiser.

Ok, you've sold me. Reasonably-priced, low maintenance, good range, and reliable. Only question now is whether I pull the trigger on a new one or look for a used one. My last bike was a PC800 that I used for touring in the US. I'm looking for some flexibility to get off paved roads, but am not interested in tearing up the dirt, so the KLR sounds perfect for me. Touring Europe and South America are both of interest to me, so I'd like to see a video on what it takes to ship a bike (e.g., any disassembly required, shippers that are considered reliable in the community, countries that are low-hassle (or not) for temporary import, the paperwork required, how to handle insurance, rough cost to Europe and South America, etc.).
Also, great content! Being clear and specific with all the recommended upgrades was particularly helpful. Maybe get an affiliate link to Amazon for some of your recommended parts? You come across as far more knowledgeable than most, so I wouldn't hesitate to buy through your link.

If you got bad gas in a FI MOTOR, you would loose your fuel pump. Draining a carb takes literally 1 minute. The carb can be built to produce far more hp than any computer flash for your FI bike. Turn your fuel off, and let the bike idle until it runs out of fuel at the end of every day, and you will NEVER have an issue with the carb.

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours

All great, great recommendations. I appreciate that very much. I think it's a valid argument (Carb vs EFI) to this day, so much so that 2021 models still come with a carb. I have a 2013 20,000kms (Australia) and agree with most of what you said, the seat is blown foam , that's why their uncomfortable, a air cushion or change to a Seat Concepts seat is a dearer solution. Yes the first thing to fix is the Doohickey, with the Eagle Mike part you showed, with the round torsion spring drilled in behind the leaver, the key thing is make sure the lock stud is torqued 8 Newton Metres so it doesn't slip open and let the chain slack, it will eat the chain guides, then your cases!!

Thank you for a most refreshing view on an old subject. I am still riding the 2013 I bought new in that year and my experience generally resonates with your own.
But you are clearly far more travelled than I, so I am hoping you might share one more angle to the KLR story.
Assuming that you have had your bikes at higher altitudes on occasion, I would like to know if you ever felt compelled to change the carb’s jets and if so, at what altitude intervals such was needed…,,, and if any other carb related adjustments were necessary?
To answer your question about what features keep me in the KLR universe…..
although I often think I want a different bike (and also using the 2015 Super Tenere I just sold after a rewarding 5 years as one point of reference), I worry about sacrificing the extreme ease of maintenance on the KLR (excepting the valves). An oil change is a ten minute affair as the skid plate does not have to be removed to access the drain plug or filter. And as the oil flowed out of the sump straight down without any trajectory at all, there is never any spillage. The ease and familiarity of general maintenance becomes most reassuring and indispensable……and I just don’t want to give it up………except for trading that carb for fuel injection.
Thanks again for a great review. I will hope for your input re my question.
    Regards from British Columbia!

Thanks for particupating in the conversation and for your question. I just picked up another one yesterday. 2012 blie and white, very attractive color on the black frame. Mint and stock, unmolested. I placed an order for all the work that can to be done on these, like the doohickey, thermobob, fork brace, shims, etc etc. Enjoy it, it is a great bike. Kawasaki saw this review and invited me to the press release of the new one coming out later in the year. I hope you stick and for that review because it seems like it is a great motorcycle. They finally made it an EFI bike and it looks great too. As for your jetting question, I honestly never felt the need to do that. I'm sure in higher altitudes onw might notice a difference, but I kept the carb clean, and ridign daily does so anyways. They suffer when the bike sits. I rode on the highest road in europe, the Sommeiler Pass in the Alps, and on three separate ocasions, and never experienced issues with starting or idling. I actually made an informational guide about that road so please take a look - it's incredibly beautiful. It is in the Epic Rides playlist. I hooe this info was helpful. Thanks for being here. Cheers. Nik

Nick, great review. Had a 2003 I put 15k miles on. Everything you mentioned is spot on my experience. I lived in Nevada then and told everyone KLR stood for King of Lousy Roads. BLM Roads, firebreaks and even single tracks into the desert it gobbled up UNTIL I hit sand. That weight up high made it difficult. Didn't like the Dunlops so went to Kenda 761s. Liked them much better. I'm older now and in Central Pa. so I moving to either RE Himalayen or BMW 310 GS.

Hi Kevin - great to have you and thanks for being here and participating in the conversation. Glad you found it valuable. I myself just picked up a Himalayan - brand new 2021 so I am curious what it could do although I already find it rather underpowered if that is important to you. Otherwise retro styling and switchable ABS. The BMW is just too expensive for what one gets in my opinion - I spoke of it in my two 650GS reviews on this channel. I will be selling the Himalay to a subscribed member on this channel shortly at a discounted price than what can be had at the dealer - stay tuned for a new video this Saturday where I introduce the idea of how subscribed viewers can get their hands on the bikes I review for a great price. Hope to see you there. Cheers. Nik

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 роки тому +2

@ANONYMOUS BIKER USA well, the new KLR bein released this year has all the necessary improvements over the last gen, but it doesn't compare to the tenere in performance (or price). If you are referring to the 1200 tenere, that's a very big and heavy bike that I would not consider for serious solo adv touring - It's a great bike for very light dirt stuff, but the KLR is a bit more capable when the going gets tough. If you are referring to the 700 - $$$. lots more money for a more advance bike to be sure, but it all depends on what you need out of it. I assume you won't be doing and crazy difficult dirt, but it's good to have the ability when you find yourself in a bind. That will happen when you start following the uinknown dirt road like little red riding hood. For this reason I always advocate for lighter ADV bikes in the simple to maintain 650 category. On this channel I reviewed many of these KLR competitors - all of them are lighter and more capable than the KLR, the KLR is simply the icon of the class and cheap, easy, and reliable. I think the new one looks great too, and no carb to clean. For example the Suzuki DR650 is 60 pounds lighter and that is huge, but you need to upgrade it to be ADV ready. The Honda XR650 is a large dirt bike, and the BMW GS650 line gives you ABS and heated grips, low center of gravity and 50 Hp. I also onw a KTM 625 SXC and that bike is barely over 300 pounds so I have confidence to take it anywhere alone- plus the suspension and power are wild - I don't know how they do it,. But for your needs - just getting in the game - the KLR is the perfect choice that needs no upgrades out the door and can go around he world tomorrow (or when you are ready :)

Great video! Those look like some intense adventures!
As for getting water in the tank, a small bottle of methyl hydrate (also known as methanol, methylated alcohol, or wood alcohol) will absorb and disperse the water in gasoline. A product like seafoam mixed at about 30ml/L will also help with crappy fuel. Two things a person can carry in small amounts for a potential rescue when fuel quality is unknown. I carried some of each when travelling through wide rural areas when I usually had to buy fuel from farmers. Hope this helps somebody.

I like the seat height, fuel tank capacity, front wheel diameter, smooth, more reliable gear changes, smother engine and the fact that it’s a carb bike...!
Everything else confirms for me why I will never buy a KLR, or even a Kawasaki.
Back in 1985 I learned how significantly different and genuinely superior Mac computers were - solely from the excitement in my girlfriend’s eyes as she described using it for the very first time.
Later, I bought my first Apple computer, then I started a design studio, then an ad agency. I only ever buy Apple computers. I still have every personal Mac I’ve ever owned. They not only work better and more reliably, they last three times as long as WindoZe things - whoever makes them.
I’ve also bought mostly Honda bikes because they are superior to other Japanese bikes, and, for the most part, logically designed.
The way you describe those fairing screw locations would drive me crazy. A deal breaker on their own.
Also, Honda was a bike designer and builder from day one. Kawasaki came to the party later, so does not have that pedigree/DNA.
Then there’s the low power and bad brakes. 50hp is about right for a 650 single. As you conclude in your BMW vids, they do get MANY more things right.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the KLR. I’m glad it served you well when you were still a crazy kid 😎
    Ride safe bro

Thanks for sharing that interesting background - and I agree with you about the quality and reliability of Hondas - cars and bikes - it's just superior, and the value for the buck is unbeatable. The KLR is making a comeback this year, redesigned, so you have not seen the last of em, be that what it may. I like the new design, and they addressed some of the issues like the carb, but it remains heavy for any serious dirt. The BMWs have been really great so far - I've owned 5 and they have not disappointment, although they go out of their way to make bikes that are difficult to work on at home. Not a Honda problem. Thanks for being a part of this community and for participating in the conversation - Cheers - Nik

Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting You’re very welcome Nik. I’m very impressed by the way you work.
One of the advantages of putting an F650GS Dakar engine in a CCM frame, is that hopefully it might be easier to work on. But it might not. I need to do some more measuring.
The project is all about saving weight. Your tips on what aftermarket parts are interchangeable have been very very useful.
This bike is already very much a complete thing - in my head, having visualised it based upon lots of input. Big cardboard drawings and cutouts are next. Then some careful calculations, making of new engine mounting brackets, and some welding.
Next will be finalising the swing arm and rear shock. I want an air system.
The front forks are still an issue. I want travel, quality, rigidity and compatibility with the best braking system: BMW’s or Honda. This may mean looking for a pair of forks and modifying brake mounts.
Sadly the X Challenge forks are upside down, so I’m not going for them - even if I could find a pair. Undetected burst oil deals bleed out very quickly, sometimes before the issue is noticed, sometimes soaking the brakes!!!
Then there will be a lot of squinting to get the aesthetics of the rest correct. I’m not actually expecting or going for pretty. But some things just obviously work.

Kawasaki also found this review valuable so they offered me the new 2022 KLR and that was the most recent review released last months. i also pit the KLR against other bikes in it's class so feel free to run through the playlist to see how it compares. To be very honest, the gear video was so long that it prove to be difficult to edit properly in any kind of reasonable manner. I give private instruction to riders and in my luggage class we take a few hours to run through the gear. You can take a look at my services on the website, but I charge $60 for a 90 minute phone consultation, and $100 for the private link to the video which is quite comprehensive. @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 роки тому +2

I would highly recommend against such a large tank - I have never experienced difficulties in finding gasoline in time for the KLR given its 6.1 gallon tank. 4 more gallons would add close to 28 pounds of weight up top and it would make the bike much harder to control. Chances are if you are in an area where you might need ten gallons of gas, the first necessity would be drinking water actually. But point taken, I will put a video together about all the accessories that are possible for this bike (anything and everything is). Please consider subscribing to be notified when new reviews come out - the next one will be about the 9 bikes in my garage at the moment. Hope to see you in future videos. Cheers - Nik

Exciting news about the new KLR eh?! I look forward to getting my hand s on one of em.

There is a new model coming out this year so if you have the cash, wait for it (from 7k on out the door)Thanks for being here! Nik

Hahaha, I don't even begin until minute 7 lol. Thanks for being here and for your patience and support - the motorcycles for me are like empty pages of books - the stories they help one create are deserving of the proper detail - so thanks for sticking with it and glad you found the review valuable. More than a review really - more like a chapter in the diary. PS: Kawasaki invited me to the launch release of the new KLR so p[lease stay tuned for that later in the year, and if you enjoyed this one, and are considering the KLR, be sure to check out the other 650 thumper ADV reviews on my channel that compare directly with it. Also, three more are in the making so I hope to see you in the future. Nonda XR650L, KTM SXC625, and BMW XChallenge 650GS. Glad to have you here Boss.

Hi there again. I hope all is well. Since you possitively loved my style of unnecessarily prolonged intro followed by overwhelming personal stories to finally get to the damn point, which fortunately results in a detailed and comprehensive review, I invite you to the premier of my longest and arguably best review yet featuring all the above elements, of course, and gorgeous scenerey from Baja Mexico (that was all one sentence). On Saturday at noon I'm premiering a new review of the NC700X so if you are looking at the KLR this review might be of interest to you. Be well in the meantime and thanks for being here.

Absolutely - Especially on the 1st generation - Kawasaki claimed it not to be a problem for the second, and my KLR had 35k hard miles without any issues, but I still recommend it - I hope that was clear in the video. I appreciate your comment and you being an active member of this channel's community - please consider subscribing to be informed when the following reviews of three more ADV bikes in the 650 category come out throughout the following months (Honda XR650L, KTM SXC625, and BMW Xchallenge). Hey there. First off you're videos are great and massively insightful and helpful. I'm just buying my first bike, and I've found a 2015 krl650 and a bmw g650gs around me, the ladder being a hundred cheaper (and also inspired by this video to search for before going through with the klr). which one should a beginner go for? I've never ridden at all. I want to mainly commute and have a sturdy mostly road worthy commuting/traveling bike, but I'm also going for dual sport/adventure cause I'd of course like to do a little light off road and trails eventually. Anyway, you seem to like the bmw more, but if you had to say for a beginner? I do prefer the bmw looks wise. But yeah, your advice would be so appreciated. Thanks again for the great and insightful content.

Hi there and welcome to the channel. Thanks for your question. I do make it a point to respond to all the comments, so I appreciate you participating in the conversation. All things being equal I would definitely go for the BMW oh, just because you also get the ABS which is most useful to New Riders who are getting used to the brakes. It's a safety mechanism and it's worth its weight in gold when needed. The BMW is also more manageable due to the weight being lower. So it will be easier to learn on. That said both bikes are very reliable and will not disappoint. Whichever you choose you'll have a blast, but again, all things being equal I would go for the BMW instead. If you decide to upgrade, the new KLR is coming out later this year and has all the necessary improvements. I did many reviews of the 650 ADV class on my channel so I hope you take a look and get more information for your new awesome Hobby. Or lifestyle. Best of luck to you, and please let me know how you like your new bike.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours Hey there! First off, thank you so much for engagin. Not just with me clearly. But in general. I obviously speak on behalf of everyone when I say you're the man for responding to (from what I saw as I was browsing your vids) every comment. Like you must be an angel. Not only because of that, but because somehow I found your vid (then again its most popular on youtube) about the KLR, and also the one comparing it to the BMW, at the perfect time. And I was enlightened at the very last minute to search the BMW on facebook marketplace. I found it and got it. Its a 2012 second gen g650gs (from what I can tell researching em). When I was watching your vid I got obsessed with the one you were presenting (Sertao), but this one is awesome enough. Any tips on it? Like I said I've never ridden. But I have some friends who ride and they're cool to help me. Also the ABS. What exactly does that entail? I did a lot of research on those bikes and bikes in general in that window where i was deciding, but I'm still really ignorant, and I've never been knowledgeable with vehicles in general.
