Yep, brown marmorated stink bugs are stinky, but that’s not the worst thing about them. They're imported agricultural pests eating their way across North America. But a native enemy from Asia - the tiny samurai wasp - has a particularly nasty method of stopping stink bugs in their tracks.

DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
---
It looks rather harmless at first glance. With a speckled exterior and a shield-like shape, the brown marmorated stink bug doesn’t appear to be any different from any other six-legged insect that might pop up in your garden. But this particular bug, which arrived in the U.S. from Asia in the mid-1990s and smells like old socks when it is squashed, is a real nuisance. Not only can it invade homes by the thousands in the wintertime, it’s one formidable agricultural pest, eating millions of dollars of peaches, apples and other crops since 2010.
Scientists are now investigating a new tactic in the war on the stink bugs: the possibility of relying on one of the bug’s natural enemies, the samurai wasp.
Also native to Asia, this parasitic wasp keeps the stink bug population in check there. How?

"While you were out drinking fruit smoothies, I was in Japan, studying the blade."
This comment made me snort laugh
Mr. Very Kool ok so I am working on this wasp for my PhD and am friends with the person who picked the name for it and sent him your comment. I’m going to think about this comment the rest of my life and chuckle. Thank you for this.
@@hillarymorin2550 Lol, Hope he gets a laugh out of it
Brilliant use of the studying the blade hahah
hahahahahaha thanks for the laugh.
"Sensei, it is I Samurai Wasp, I shall promise you I will defeat the stinky menace and save our crops!"
*fellow insects cheer*
Spagh Etti love that. Get rid
Of mr. Stink.
Samurai Wasp: fails job
Shogun 2 Narrator: SHAMEFUL DISHPLAY
😒😂
While you been drinking fruit juices I've been studying the way of the sword.
stink bugs after seeing this: Well, off to visit your mother! *dies in samurai wasp attack*
Okay, that is the cutest wasp I've ever seen, and wasps are not known for their cuteness.
i think the name helped a little
Lauren's voice is perfect for a narration like this 🥰
"Let them fight" - Dr. Ishiro Serizawa
Free range chickens under your fruit trees do a lot to help control stink bugs. I have a small orchard of apples and have seen a marked reduction in stink bugs in the areas where my hens range under the trees. Not enough to stop them cold, but with the wasps able to take 60% to 90% maybe it will be enough to stop them in the future without bee killing pesticides.
Wasp: I promise Master Yoshi, that I shall destroy all stinkbugs alive
Ok, that's the cutest wasp I have seen in my life.
I love the instant music change when we see the samurai wasp for the first time. It’s perfect.
"As long as the samurai wasp doesnt become a pest too"
It sounds like foreshadowing...
Awww stink bugs are so cute i love holding them and letting them crawl all over my face!! 💕
Can anything stop this stink bug
Me: yea a boot can
We did it guys. We found the one and only useful wasp
Samurai wasp you are my hero I love you so much, You are a light in the darkness God bless you
In the past 8 years I've seen these stink bugs over run our home more and more. I actually keep track of how many I find every winter. 3 to 6 for the first two years 35 to 40 the last 2
I've watched this video before, but Tom Scott brought me back here again!
Welcome back! We have a new video today that has a different species of parasitic wasp: ua-cam.com/video/MtPXows1FWs/v-deo.html
My cat found one outside on my balcony, picked it up and brought it inside. Thinking it was a fly or just a beetle I left her alone until I heard gagging from her. These things are everywhere in my garden
I am in SW Washington. I have them here. One thing I use, is Dawn dish soap. Half a cup or more per gallon. In a sprayer. Seems to kill them. Except most of my trees and plants are dead. The eat more than fruit.
Your content is amazing and very well produced however its just never long enough👍
samurai wasps exist:
stink bugs exist:
also, samurai wasps when seeing a stink bug: *_TENNOHEIKA BANZAI!!_*
I've literally never had any problems with stink bugs. They don't stink when I pick them up and I've never noticed any problems with my food.
I mean, we only get one or two every now and then so. When I get one in my house I pick it up and release it outside but I've never noticed a smell. I don't see the hype.
2:09
Lauren: what could possibly stop the stink bug
Me: uh bug spray DUUUHHH
That barely works. You have to spray sooo much to kill them, and then once you do they take forever to die. I was traumatized by the sound they made when one was flopping all over the floor trying to fly away
Tony Balony, no like really really strong 💪 bug spray. ;)
Samurai Wasps are the hero we always needed but didn't deserve.
swarms of samurai wasps taking over everything
Yep, my cat was playing with one of these a few weeks ago, in Chicago. I don't think he liked the smell very much.
I knew these guys back in China. Never expected to see them here.
My cat is afraid of them things!🙀
My cat refuses to touch or go near them! She loves hunting bugs but she strangely steered clear away from these ones, I even brought it to her. And then I realised why she refused to go near them. Too late for me.
@@sherylchen4416 Your cat is very smart! I instinctively smacked one of them things when it landed on my face while I was driving from Philadelphia to New York. Big mistake!😰
when you have a garden you start to really hate birds and bugs
and once that happens the wasps become a problem and it just goes on and on and on
One question: Why on earth would you touch these things ? People are really weird and creepy.
when i was little i used to pick these up and i still do it so im kinda used to the smell
Samurai Wasp: omae wa mou shindeiru
Stinkbug: Nani?! o.0
Can anything stop this stink bug?
Yeah. My shoe.
Man I HATE Stinkbugs!
ok but the way He/She picked up the bug at 1:44
Ooh I've seen samurai wasps before they are super duper tiny
I was sprayed in the eye with the spray
Everyone complaining about having one or two stinkbugs meanwhile my house looks like that episode of infested. If you have one you probably have 20 more somewhere
My cats destroy stink bugs by the billions I swear. They can be on the other side of the house, hear the stink bug and track and kill in seconds
Yet in churchill elementary is literally a stink bug sanctuary
Are we not gonna mention how fricking huge the wasps head is?
finally one thing that makes me like wasps
We had an infestation of the stink bugs while we were living in Illinois. I moved out and my clothes still smell like the spray.
“If you ever eaten berries plucked from natural bush - you may know that these bugs are bitter~”
I live in KY and have always had a stink bug....I won't call it a problem because I like them, but there's too many of them. It seems this year I've noticed these little wasps more and more. They're cute little things and don't sting I guess, so I just observe them. Never thought this was the reason I'd seen so many of them and maybe why I'm seeing less and less stinkers. Hmmm, interesting.
I accidentally washed one of those bugs with my clothes. When I opened the dryer......oh god.....the smell......
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Stink Bugs got good defense mechanism I release one last night
I live in Southwest Virginia and these things are so bad, I can go outside and count 2 dozen easily on the porch. Also they get in the house, the jams of car doors they're just everywhere! Hang clothes up outside to dry? better check them before you bring them in because stinkbugs are guaranteed to be in them.
Actually stink bugs have a sweet powerful almond smell. Came across one from me work yesterday tried to feed to a spider but there 2 weak or 2 soft and tend to cut it out of the web so I ended up stomping on it. The more I find the more il wipe out
And if it fails,
Seppuku.
I had a dream i took care of those. Thanks so much!
(Not the samurai wasp but those stink bugs. They didnt stink at all. They were gigantic too
This week there was a brown marmorated stinkbug on a tree in my neighborhood. He's a nice pal.
Stinkbug came from Asia. Specifically Kowloon Bay walled city
When i was 4, i used to squish stink bugs :V
I found a stink bug in my McDonald's fries once.
Female Cuckoo bird : "I deposit my eggs into the nest of other birds so they raise my offspring instead of their own"
Female Samurai Wasp : "That's cute"
These guys always end up in the toilet once I get them.
Whoever created the name "Samurai Wasp" just made this video's comment section filled with JoJo references.
Get stick bugged lol
PLEASE. Where I live stinkbug infestations are extreme, near before and sometimes during winter they can cover entire buildings. The smell can't be underrated either, the only suitable way to clean off stinkbug "stink" is with lemon juice and time. Calling for the immediate introduction of these things in the NorthEast ASAP.
You can't even pick them up gently and toss them outside without them releasing that horrible smelling stench. It dosen't readily wash off with soap either.
These things own my house
I lived in an area that had my tan house turn brown during some time of the year due to stink bugs
Wasps are cool my dudes.
Stink bugs smell like cherries to me. It doesn’t bother me.
The only wasp I'll allow.
I want like all the samurai wasps! Our house gets filled with nasty stink bugs in the fall here in Ohio! Release the samurai!
A wasp that is actually cute? What?
To me, this is bug smells like fermented tea leaves.
Man I hope this turns out well, but remember the cane toad, introducing species is percarious business
I don’t like about stink bugs is that they stink and when you kill them they have a loud crunchy noise.
In our province we call it tayangaw
Man those Stik bugs distroyed evry thing in Georgia 🇬🇪 it's al across contry
*Deep Look did not say anything about stinkbugs flying*
yeah really: a few months ago one flew by my ear as i fell asleep they sound like tiny helicopter flying
Wake up samurai we have some eggs to burn
Rip stink bugs died before born
You think they smell bad, I've bitten one XD
I had a stinkbug drop a stink on me but it just smelled like pine needles to me.
I never knew I’d love a wasp so much
They also look to small to sting
Another unwanted thing to come out of Asia. Along with Murder hornets and some new Asian beetle and COVID ....the list is endless. Though I don’t mind stink bugs. I live in an apartment complex and they always come in during the fall, see them on warmer days in the winter. I let them be. They’re not in here to eat fruit or anything. Once they come in for the winter they’re in a mode where they’re not eating anything until spring, when they return outdoors. Although they don’t seem to live long. I’ll see one come out, watch it be active that evening. Then I usually find them dead in a couple days. The only thing that I HATE is when they fly. Cause they sound like helicopters or drones. I used to think there was a fly, and I’d go around trying to find it and never could. Was actually relieved when I found out the buzzing was a stink bug. Though I have a small light on and I think I hear one kinda flying right now. -shrug- not going to kill him, put him out in the cold. Long as he doesn’t bother me, or hurt me, why would I hurt him? Though summertime, I’d let him outside.
We need them here in Michigan!
I have a very VERY strong fear of stinkbugs, this video made me shiver lol. So yeah, bring on over the wasps, never had an issue with them anyways.
We have that here
Its annoying the smell sucks
These bugs attacked me when I was younger im not a fan of these bugs...
Aren’t they more like ninjas than samurais?
1:44 NOOOOOO! WHY WOULD YOU TOUCH IT
I got sprayed by one of these and it smells like musky cinnamon.
The stinkbug*
A few decades ago? They were here In the 70s
I manage to not say no
I tought that was a kissing bug
I hate these. They get in my room and dive bomb the walls and fall on the floor. Always when the lights are off too make sure I freak out
Did you know? If it pee on your hands.. It turns red.... And its tsty to eat
the namesake makes sense for these wasps. the farmer shoguns of america could hire these waps to control stinkbugs.
The only wasps that look cute
I’m scared what if every time a wasp bites me it lays an egg
I’m terrified of stank bugs I hate em.
me too girl
I remember seeing these at recess and killing them while they do nothing but maybe i just didnt smell them
Nice love your video 📹
I hate stink bugs more than anything on this planet
I think stink bugs smell good
I wanna know. What would have happened if a stink bug squirted they’re chemicals in a human?
