Hey Rosa, this was a great episode! I was wondering, do you happen to know how the rotating motion helps to bore a hole in the acorn? I would have assumed that the rostrum was shaped or textured in a way that made it function something like a drill bit, but from what I can see it looks mostly smooth...

Do female weevils try to reach into another one's burrow and kill the eggs? Like an interspecies competition sort of thing. Maybe they like to dig under the cap because it hides the burrow better.

Acorn weevils are so cute and perfectly named!
They seem to mind their own business for the most part as well.
Why do we have mosquitoes, ticks, and wasps instead of more weevils? WHY DOES THE UNIVERSE HATE US?

I had no idea the rostrum bent like that as it eats through the acorn, that is incredible

she digs a hole in the acorn and deposites her eggs dead center on the hole without a back up camera or GPS coordinates of the hole. I think that is impressive.

This is fascinating. The weevils are really cool and cute. I always wondered what creature made the holes in the acorns. This was very interesting and now I am going to watch for them. ✌

@@projectz975acorns are traditional food source for many Native CA peoples who know how to gather the good ones and process them. I found this video super interesting because I have gathered acorns with Native folks and been taught to avoid the ones with holes or discoloration. It was really fun to see one of the animals responsible for this. I’ve lived in CA a long time but never witnessed these critters. Now I’ll be looking for them!
