Completely agree. The 6th generation was just perfect, it was focused solely on the games, and not GWAFIKS!!! Also not how many overpriced dlc packs that companies could push out. if developer's wanted to add something to the game they were called "expansion packs" anyone remember those? they actually were worth buying and they added more than just a different color to your rifle! The games were actually original too, not grey brown modern shooter warfare 7, some of the greatest games of all time were 6th generation and its really sad that the consoles are only getting worse.
alpha_child I totally agree. When I played Halo 2 online for the first time, I never thought it could get better. Gamecube and PS2 were great too, who could forget Pikmin, or GOD who could forget _Shadow of the Colossus?!_ SotC is arguably one of the best games ever made.
alpha_child Dreamcast, most underrated system at the time. I still love playing mine. It seemed like it was a bit too ahead of its time... but I loved it for that.
You know what really pisses me off? they don't do memory cards anymore, back in the PS2 days, if you wanted to play your stuff round someone elses house, or your console broke, you had all your data on it, simple and easy. Forgive me i may be missing something (Or not) but nowadays, if your PS4 breaks, or you want to play your game progress on your friends console, or you just want to switch to a different model, you're screwed. >:(
Robstar1992 You mean internal harddrives? When I originally bought my X360 all I had was a 64 MB memory card - and it was fine for the first while. I still have said card, which has my XBL profile on it, so now if I go over to a friend's place to game, I can load up my profile np without having to do recovery BS. Seriously that card was crucial when my friends and I were big into Halo, I could bring it to a friends house and be on _my profile_ gaining experience and rating for my profile while my other friends were stuck as just 'guest.' Memory cards rule, bring them back you fucks!
Robstar1992 Cloud storage is nice, I only own a ps2 so I don't know about xboxes and ps3/4 but pcs have that and it's good. Too bad if there's no internet though. I like my ps2 very much. I do however think that sticking a USB flashdrive in your console should be working and be able to store saves on it. Mem cards were just storage, maybe flash even.
Aeonized Cloud is nice, but it can be a nuisance if your game crashes and you want to start it up again immediately. Steam doesn't take too long to upload it to the cloud, but Origin and Uplay seem to take an eternity.
Unfortunately, things aren't even close to what they used to be. Gamers who lived in the late 80s and during the magical 90s need to be selective and keep playing the old games over and over. The game is over for us. 80% of the games nowadays are not for me. A Resident Evil here and there, Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, Gran Turismo... one new Mario/Zelda game here and here and that's all.
I agree. And, I have not even got into Skyrim and don't like Red Dead, really. Also, next year, 2019, they are remaking Resident Evil 2. So, watch out for that. I also don't like GT much, I like Need for Speed, but don't like the look of any of the new ones. The new Donkey Kong, Sonic, Mario, and Zelda games are amazing, though (well, some of them). Also, Street Fighter 5 or whatever looks great. So, you have a few things over the last 5 years. But, man, 1988 to 2008. Greatest 20 years of all time! The end! (And maybe the greatest 10 years would be 1985 to 1995. But, I'd say 1990 to 2000.)
What I hate: Games being made available digital only when (in other parts of the world) there is a physical release. Not only do you have to pay retail price for said (digital) game but you also need to buy a very uniquely made expensive memory card to store the game. Because of this the price to be able to play the game is doubled. Not only that buy some people strictly prefer (and only play) physical games. So a digital game that may be very fantastic and/or anticipated can easily fly under the radar (maybe even limited run games if the person doesn't buy things online).
I'm a PS2 guy, myself. However, I grew up on the N64, Mega Drive, and PS1. Also, Game Boy Colour, Game Boy Advance, PSP, and DS for handheld. However, fear not, you still have the great 3DS and great Wii U. I also love the normal Wii. You also have the GameCube (though it costs a lot now, sadly). I also just bought the unstoppable SNES. For me, even though I grew up on the PS1 and N64, the 16-bit and 128-bit generations are the best, I'd say. Just remarkable. So, that's the Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and Dreamcast. And, the PS3 is an insane fucking machine. Really amazing. Of course, for FPS, the best machine in the world may be the Xbox 360.
In my opinion, the 3rd, 4th, 5th , and 6th console generations are the best generations of all time! I can't lay my finger on it, but those generations had something magical that the 7th and 8th generations do not have.
Yeah and games started holding your hand in the mid ps2 era there is no joy of discovery I wish more Jrpgs where as challenging as ff12. but i feel like there should be some handholding for casuals. ps2 was well balanced in handholdy and no handholdy games.
16-bit and 128-bit for me. Unstoppable. Though, PS3 is a crazy fucking machine! Like, really great (other than DLC nonsense and so on). Of course, the 8th, 9th, 10th generations will never be able to come close to the 16-bit and 128-bit generations, by definition. If we're not careful, the 9th and 10th generations won't really be considered good or real home gaming to anybody other than PC gamers and emulators. That's the way we are going. PCs and phones and illegal downloads/virtual consoles. But, that's what most gamers are like now, and sadly, home consoles/handhelds are not just selling or being made like how they used to 10, 15, 25-years-ago.
I think the ever increasing development costs are really at the heart of most of these problems. Once an industry gets too expensive and large it starts to develop a lot of these problems
I love your rant, 100% truth. Shoe horning collectables in every fucking game: I don't mean good collectables I just mean the ones that do nothing but give you an achievement/trophy, and are only put in because Brady Games wants to sell more guides, and developers want to trick you into thinking you got more playtime out of the game than you actually did. Constantly launching Broken Games: If I bought a game in 2005 or earlier they worked on day 1. Now most games come buggy or unplayable, and it's only getting worse. Tacked on multiplayer ruined Bioshock 2. On Disc DLC ruined Capcom. (and almost every other developer) Region Locking means I cannot play Mother 1,2,3 aka Earthbound trilogy DRM killed Xbox One Online Trophies/Achievements, I hate these because once the multiplayer community dries up they cannot be obtained.
johnhasaguitar Personally, I NEVER cared for them. I just hat the fact when collectibles and such do nothing or don't actually reward you. I like the new way of at the very least getting artwork for them but... it's just not enough incentive. Venom NBK Although, I don't think a couple of things you said were exactly, completely ruinous but they sure were big problems.... and simply stupid ones at that.
Juan Strong Oh get the fuck out. Everyone thinks these indie games are the savior of gaming. What nakes them special? What makes them feel like heart and passion was put into it? Nothing! Indie games are taken more lightly and are of lower quality! All of them are 2D platformers!
Is a Custom Soundtrack on PS3 too Much to ask? PS3 is a Great System , But Would it Really be That Hard to be Able to do Something the Original Xbox Could do?
God I wish I knew how to design games, I would make them and release them cheap with everything included. including free bonus items and maps just for buying it. No dlc no bullshit, just strait gaming how it was intended to be,
Nah, last gen was the worst. If it wasn't for games like The Witcher 3, Bloodborne, uncharted 4, dark souls 3, doom, etc. then I would say this gen. This gen has slowly seen the end of Call of Duty unlike last gen which every game company wanted to be like it.
Nah the was a huge spike in games of all sorts of different genre's and not just gritty war games, Divinity Original Sin, The Evil Within and Yooka Laylee are good examples. (Yes i'm aware it's not released yet). But I have fond memories of last gen too, I played many games that have entertained me greatly, especially a lot of games in 2011 like Uncharted 3, Infamous 2, Rage, AC Revelations, L.A Noire, etc.
***** Naming a bunch of examples doesn't really prove whether or not a game is better or worse. Watch, Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, Dying Light, Uncharted 4, Doom 2016, Mortal Kombat X, Fallout 4, Shadow Warrior (which I recommend checking out), Super Mario Maker, Shadow of Mordor, etc. And it's only been almost 3 years since PS4 and XBONE came out and your list covers the whole life cycle (granted none of us named ALL good games). I think last gen was great, maybe one of my favorites but this gen is more diverse, like much more.
***** A lot of those games were shooters that you mentioned. This gen we had 3D platformers, survival horror and many other genres make a big come back.
I donno man new games are just really boring for me they just basically play themselves plus I dont do online gaming soo yea. The 90's were the best gaming years for me and when the ps1 came out with twisted metal and metal gear solid was cool buying "Tips & Tricks" magazine after that gaming was shit and still is shit for me. All they do is remake classics and kill them and make first person shooters like wtf do something impressive game developers.
PEScharlie yea straight up I agree. I dont really know what to think anymore. I just dont see myself collecting xbox or ps3 games ever and ive played a lot when they came out but when I look at them now its just like naaaa.Generations..I guess.
One of the biggest reasons is because as we grow older, we don't get the same level of enjoyment out of video games as we did when we were young. Mainly, because the concepts and gameplay are so familiar that it doesn't surprise you or entertain you as much.
Merland5 yea I could kind of see that but I still have fun playing my retro systems on the weekends and jrps with my girlfriend. Idono if I'm just and prude and stick with what I think is original fun..I mean Super Metriod is always fun for me to play,Star Fox 64 is always a blast,Streets of Rage for Sega I never get tired of. I bought a ps3 when it came out TRIED to get into the COD hype and played God of War..Uncharted games that were "good" believe me I tried to like all the new stuff but I ended up going to a game stop and selling everything and went to the flea market and got a Super Nintendo. I really couldn't get into it the oldest system I'll ever own is a PS2.
Hate to rain on your guys' parade, but Destiny does nothing special and less than half as much as what was originally promised. They cut it up into several DLCs to maximize profits, and the only reason it did so well is because of an insane budget to hype it up and the fact that the only other game it had to compete with at launch was Shadow of Mordor. Destiny went from potentially being one of the best games ever made, to a calculated money making machine. If you buy all the DLCs and extra's, you're going to be out of roughly $200 by the end of it. You ever notice how in Destiny, as soon as your character is finally geared up with the best shit, after hours and hours grinding, that the new DLC is coming out within a few weeks? It's 100% calculated to keep you playing and keep you paying money. $200 for one game, with no end game content except grinding the same thing over and over, and a PvP that's similar to Halo's but not as good. GG EA/Activision, gg.
Robstar1992 Well apparently they originally wanted to have a trading system in the game. Which would totally make sense to the loot model. You loot a legendary Warlock piece as a Titan? Trade with a Warlock for a piece of Titan. It makes sense, but they took it out to prolong your play time. I got maxxed out pretty quick when it came out and never picked it up again, so I went and sold it while it's still worth something.
I'm getting tired of all these 1st-person shooters (Looking at you COD) getting made like it's the only thing out there. How many horror games these days really resemble the old Resident Evil and Silent Hill days. The most recent, we got The Evil Within and Resident Evil:Revelations 2. Great, how about more of that. Also more games like the Batman Arkham series, where it's not just simple button mashing, but an actual sophisticated combat system, a lot of cool unique stealth innovations, crazy boss fights and insane puzzle challenges. OMG I'm so glad I didn't buy Destiny alone. I got it with the PS4 bundle pack. So I'm grateful for having a white PS4. I hope Allison Road comes soon
I agree a hundred percent the only fps game I enjoyed since BioShock was far cry 4 and primal but other than that they're getting old wish more games would be like fallout 4 give you the option of a 3rd person too
I agree last gen you had games that stood out me personally BioShock Arkham series and etc. The current gen is awful games copying the older ones dying light is dead island I could go on but won't. But to me this gen as been the worse in years
It's the first generation I haven't been psyched to get a console. That tells me enough. Only just started the video and I already know I'm already going to agree with everything.
lets see, force to pay to play online(XBL,PS+). micro transactions, dlc/seasson passes on stores before the full game even comes out, unfinished/rush games(SFV,MGSV), repetetive games(The Division), hd/remastered games resold at full price, defected hardware, short hardrive capacity, unsuported hardware(psvita), pre-order bonus bull shit that can't be aquired later on(DBZX, Vegetta), stupid publishers(KONAMI),yeah this gen SUCKS.
It's not just consoles, mass media as a whole has been decreasing in quality. Video games, music, anime, etc. I think I'm starting to go through a phase when I'm starting to not care about media entertainment anymore. :/
early 80's did kill the home gaming market. Nintendo rebuilt it with the NES in the mid 80's and 90's with the Super NES. Those where the good days of gaming.
yeah but back then you played games to play games and escape from real life. Now games just want to be as close to real life as possible. Im not hating on this game but ill use it as an example. Call of Duty. I have a bunch of call of duty games but it seems like they are all same ol same ol different storied games. I realize thats what a "franchise" is and Mario does it all the time but sometimes you just want to escape reality not be drug into it with a game. Now I do realize this is my opinion and there are good points to both sides of the argument. I am a big video game collectorso I have a bunch of titles from all "eras" of gaming.
OK lol with the exception of NINTENDO who still wants to be "family friendly" most systems push their as close to real as you can get feeling. Nintendo games are still kiddie games. Dont get me wrong im not hating on any of them. I have the PS3, Xbox 360 and wii and i get different types of entertainment from each.
Good points. I miss the good old days of buying a cart, bringing it home, and simply getting to play it right away WITHOUT having to get online and download a bunch of stupid release days patches. Funny thing is I've kind of gotten away from playing new console games and have been mostly playing all my classic consoles. SMS/Genesis/TG16/NES/SNES/Saturn/PSX/DC (and more) FTW!!!
Nope. Standard Edition. EB Games website lists it at 89.99 in Canadian Dollars. With HST it comes to $101.70. Still gonna buy the piece of shit anyway.
I blame the gamers who preorder and buy season passes. These companies will stop once we stop supporting bullshit. Quit supporting REQ packs and shit like that too. It's a cancer.
Dammit, I hate what they've done to RPG's. I don't hate MMO's in the least, but can we please get some old school RPG's that actually have open worlds, a compelling story and characters, awesome music, and actually take many hours to finish as well as having some replay value?
Did you play Baldur's Gate and/or Planescape: Torment? Because Project Eternity and Torment: Tides of Numenera are now options for those of us who remember the good old days of good old games.
There are a few now, but... not many. If you really want old-school RPGs, you'll have to go back to the 16-bit and maybe 32/128-bit generations. However, the PS3 has a few, and, of course, the PC is the best for MMORPGs. If you have money the Switch may be a good one for you, if you want handheld RPGs, etc. But, you will notice, the SNES is the best system for old-school RPGs, most likely. You just don't have many really old-school RPGs at all.
The thing about Day 1 DLC is that when a company is in the process of shipping their game, it takes about 6-12 months until they're able to ship it. So they spend that time to work on DLC, which is finished by the time the game is ready to go on store shelves.
Even though i think it is crap, consoles have done region blocking for ever. First time i ran into it was on PS1 when a friend of mine sent me a japanese Dragon Ball Z game that only released in japan. The U.S. PS1 wouldnt boot the disc due to region blocking but there was this trick you could do with a paper clip to push down the lid button. You start the PS with an american game to get through the boot menu then swap the game out at a certain point and it would play. I know that was long winded but they have done the region thing for quite a long time. Still dumb. Keep up the good vids Yooooo
Ironically the only good console right now is the WiiU, the PC gets really fucked because of the shitty ports. PS4 and XBOX one are PC's... thats it. WiiU is also a PC but its the only one with interesting games. WiiU + PC + vita/3ds is my choice for this gen. I dont have any intention to buy a PS4 or XBO right now.
I agree mostly. Just remember that the shitty ports are due to poor utilization of multithreaded CPUs. Games only really use the first core and it doesn't scale well with multi GPU configs either. This will however be remedied by the advent (sort of) of low level drivers for the hardware and low level APIs like the next OpenGL, DX12 and Mantle to a lesser extent. Mantle was basically a prototype for low level APIs and since it worked so well it opened the door towards better scaling of hardware which makes me extremely happy. Give it 2 years tops ;)
If the XBone and ps4 are PC's *why do they have to pay to play online. *why do mods not come out for them. *why do updates for games cost the developers to upload them Consoles main goal is to take control of every media outlet and they are putting gaming to the side. pretty soon Microsoft will announce their very own cable service. Fuck corporations! If a developer wont fix a pc game someone else dose. Never seen that happen on a console..... (PC is not perfect, It's selling out too. I truly believe Valve is taking bribes from Sony and Microsoft and sticking to selling over Steam. ... They could be crushing the current gen if they came out with a console and got back into making games but doing nothing and making money is so much more cake for them in their eyes!)
Kill4ism First Valve is going to compete with consoles with Steam Machines. No Valve is not taking bribes from Sony or Microsoft. In fact Gabe N said "Windows 8 is a train wreck". Also Valve still does make games but they wait until a game is ready and very good instead of making shovelware every year like EA. Just wait Steam Machines can and will be crushing the current gen consoles.
Funny how after all these years this video is still relevant I had to stop and look at the date after hearing some things, but overall this could have been posted yesterday and still made sense.
As much I love my PS3 I still enjoy my Sega Genesis, my SNES/NES clone system (FC Twin), Nintendo Gamecube & PS1 because the older games are fuck'n awesome, no DLC. No Bullshit. Back in the 90's (god I feel old lol) you buy the damn game & you get would (sometimes) get the game 100% complete.
Is it such a sin to have backwards compatibility? I was thinking of getting a X-box one but when i heard that it wasint going to be then screw it. I never bought a 360 and always wanted to try out Crackdown 1 n 2. that idea was thrown out the window. all in one machine? LOL!!! bullshit. if it was the all in one machine then it would have no problem playing classic X-box and 360 games.
A. I'm not a fan of first person shooters, but I can't believe how many there are. I'm not saying they're bad; however, I like having variety when it comes to games. Everything is so profit motivated that we see a lot of the same type of game, because game companies fall into this false belief that there's a magic formula that follows the same recipe. Movies, tv shows, and music also do the same thing! LOL I thought it was interesting as well, when Sony said they're releasing the PS4 first in the U.S., because they have more games that western audiences will enjoy. My first reaction was: NOOOO!!! I love Japanese games, but I also like games that are unique. Japanese games can, at times, follow the same formulas when it comes to character development, and game layout.
I agree with everything you said in the video. Except, the online pass part. Battlefield 3 had that online pass requirement and if you bought it used you had to buy the online pass in the main menu of the game. Not sure if every game gives that option but I wouldn't doubt it.
LOL, I was just thinking about what your opinion on the current state of Resident Evil is and I see a Resident Evil rant video on the playlist. That's next this evening :D
I was a really into console games but as the companies added more restrictions and methods of squeezing more money out of the already overcharged customers I was frustrated and started to lose interest and when the Xbox One was announced that was the final nail in the coffin so I switched to PC and feel that it was the best decision I made in that regard as there are so many more benefits that it has over consoles that it'd take too long to list them. All I can say is if a company decides to fuck over its customers look elsewhere for alternatives and not feed the corporate machine who usually sit there smugly trying to figure out how to fuck everyone over when it comes to the next generation after. If you cut them off from what they care about the most "money" they sometimes start to put an effort into working on a half decent product that can draw back the customers who didn't lay back and allow themselves get raped just because they want to be fanatically loyal to a brand name.
There have been many great games this generation and many leaps forward in online play and graphical technology but this generation has definitely seen the worst in terms of business practices and streamlining. The eighth one will just be a polished off version of what we have now yeah we'll have games like watch dogs and titanfall that look promising but you'll have to fight through a lot of bullshit to enjoy 8th gen.
Wow ! didn't check when this video was put online until 15 min in . I tought you were speaking about the Ps4, Xone gen .Nothing changed and it's worse .that was 5 years ago.that's crazy.
This is where i stopped buying new PS3 games(or AAA games) & became a Retro/Indie gamer. My friends recommended me buy PS4 console & some GOTY games like the last of us & GTA V, sadly.. i refused, now friends called me a stone age guy & bad taster, sorry i don't like current & next gen they're obviously awful, i just don't want to pay a lot of dlcs & 1st or 3rd person shooter games...
I feel Gil murdoc's pain. I don't think I'd be playing much of anything if I wasn't on fighting games. It's all I really play nowadays. And some rts. You know watching these rants is makin me wanna get I to the video game industry just to do things the way they should be done!!!!!! It's the people on top that seem to be....just messin things up!
many people unloading Rock Band instruments are likely to regret it in the future, imagine how much a complete set (especially in-box) will sell for in 10-20 years. also: nice shirt
I would argue that we can deal with bad games so much better nowadays because we have resources to know right away if the game is good or not. Back in the Atari 2600 days, you had little indication of if ET was actually good or not until you actually bought it. Same with Superman 64, the name got more suckers than it would nowadays.
2011? Damn I miss that era lol. It was great until like 2014 or so. Fewer good games, 50-70 plus gb game sizes, COD is still alive lol. Sadly we had no idea how much worse it would get. Cough Street Fighter.
While I do think the graphics of the PS4 is better than the prior generation, but the X-Box One can't even do 60fps at 1080p. I do actually think the Wii U is a unique experiance because, in a game like Zombie U, you can use the game pad as a game map, to keep track of weapons, etc, without having to keep pausing your game, dropping into a map, weapons stash, etc. The fact you can also use you game pad while someone uses the TV, or so you can watch videos in Bed, play games in another room, etc. The Red Ring of Death is the number one reason I didn't buy an X-box one, even though I have a decent number of games from my 360. I went through 3 systems due to the Red Ring of Death., until they sammy warrantee had expired. I bought a gears of war system which has been stable thus far, except for the loud fan. I think the decline of the Xbox one says something about the public's trust of Microsoft. In time, I may get a PS4, but I am more than happy with my Wii U, right now.
I like most of your points but what's with the price point one? Just what generation are you going by? Back in the NES days, games started at $40. Then came the Genesis, some games on that console started at as high as $80. SNES also had highly varied prices like the Genesis from what I remember. The whole $50 price point for a new game started with the original Playstation but N64 games started at $60. It wasn't until last gen that $50 was a standard really.
+jaws Yeah fuck them money grabbing fucks. If you have a decent spec pc then now the time to move your ps2 and gc+ wii games too if you catch my drifty
I know this is a year and a half old, but a ton of what you said is still so relevant and perhaps even worse. Businesses just don't care about how much they're liked. We may hate all their tactics, but as long as they make their money, they'll continue doing all this. We as consumers have to start making a stand to not buy into their tactics so they'll stop doing this. Oh and I'm sure this has been said before, but Ninja Theory and Team Ninja are two very different developers :p
Excellent- you mentioned Mega Man Legends 3 and its demise; I'll have you know I'm deeply nostalgic for that one because it was the very first exposure I had to a role-playing world. Mind you this was before computers were in everyone's houses and I didn't know videogames were so widespread or that cheat books existed. I had no idea a videogame could be like that- so up front and personal.
been gaming since 1978 and i don't think i have managed to complain this much in that entire time... total... it's gonna give him grey hairs surely? :s
Since the start of the third generation(pc, xbox360, ps3 and wii) the game industry it's awful indeed! Since that time, start all the awful things we have today like the DLCs, microtransactions, expansive and unfinish games! The most noticeable thing is the poor quality from the games overall in the last 5 6 years! Even this last generation pc, ps4, xbox one and wii u is not that good in terms of quality overall. The poor quality continues and all the problems each came before. In 10 games you have 1 good. The game companys these days only care about money and not to deliver quality to the consumer unlike before. Its not all studios who do that, but overall do it. Even the game companys use to be trustworthy before are not trustworthy anymore. Like for example Konami, capcom, ubisoft, activision, square enix, even EA and the list goes on. These days we only can trust a few game companys each we have sure they will deliver quality games and actually care about the consumers like valve, rockstar, Bethesda and some few more but not that much like the old times when we had tons of good studios each care about consumers and deliver quality games most of the times. The game industry these days its a bullshit.
Yeah Alpha I feel your pain about region lock. I am from Brazil, and here we have the same region as Australia, so shit that comes out region locked for USA, for Europe or japan, doesn't work on my 360, it's so shitty that i couldn't even play GTA IV when it came out I had to buy a Ps3 because of that
I remamber the story when some big company (idk if that was microsoft or EA) said that multi is a future and nobody want anymore singleplayer games. It was like 2 months before Skyrim premiere. Well guess what happend after Skyrim was released.....
I love your point about used games. Why is it developers only get money from a new sale but gamestop gets to eat from the same table twice? If gamestop gets 10% of a new sale, developers should get 10% of a used sale
For the Red Ring of Death, 1 or 3 sections of the ring meant a hardware failure, and 2 sections meant you had an overheating issue. People discovered temporary solutions to the problems, but ultimately you had to send it in to get it fixed or buy a new one. That's why I switched to PS3.
6 years later and video games are becoming more and more smaller than they were 10 years ago microtransactions are getting out of control. The safest games to play that have no type of microtransactions are usually jrpgs like dark souls or blood-borne.
Great rant but I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet but since the 90's gaming has actually gotten cheaper if you take inflation into account. a $50 SNES cartridge in the mid 90's would cost about $73-$78 nowadays and with the advent of services like Steam, GoG and Humble Bundles, it's even cheaper.
U should use ur channel to help create a petition for games to be co op and make a rant on it. So many game developers ignore co op when we enjoy playing with our friends.
Also, don't blame Team Ninja for how Metroid Other M turned out. The co-creator, Sakamoto, is responsible for that. He had complete control over the whole thing. Team Ninja even wanted to use nun-chuck controls but Sakamoto adamantly insisted on the awkward wii-mote only ones.
I think this is a great time to be a retro gamer. I haven't bought any newgen consoles but I'm just fine with the libraries I still have to explore in PS1, PS2, SNES, and maybe N64 games. That's just me
no like or dislike - I don't know him personally, but it deserves a commentary or a parody version. Complaining (or Ranting) about the games and the industry can be summed up in as little as "buy it or don't" - retail is driven by the numbers - if people don't buy then the industry will adjust with the trends that work - although this change will not be overnight.
Thank you, so much, alpha, for bringing up all of these points. These are all total bullshit things that have been happening, and it does my gamer heart good to hear someone other than myself speak the truth. You did miss something, though. In case you don't already know, please look into a game called Dungeon Fighter Online and how Nexon failed miserably in bringing it the US because they didn't put any effort into it, yet blamed its shutdown on lack of popularity (which is bullshit because at one time, it was more popular than its "star creation" called Maple Story). This is what happens when some other company takes an awesome game to another region.
Completely right, until very recently used to conceder many games an art form (with absolutely awesome music, story, character development, aesthetic worlds to explore, art style, etc.). Now there hasn't been a single AAA title that has wowed me for some time (the last being batman Arkham city and The last of Us). Most of the best innovation coming from indies and small companies. Where's this generation Chrono Trigger or Valkyrie Profile? Marketing and greedy practices has killed most of what the gaming industry used to be.
i made a video on my page of how much stuff the ps4 doesnt have that the ps3 has to pretty much show people how ripped off they are getting from these new consoles and how a 7 year old console does over 40+ things MORE then the new ps4. half the people understood me and said they were passing on the ps4, but the other half spewed hate comments at me saying i was a idiot and didnt know what i was talking about. its so sad that so many people dont see how ripped off there getting and they just accept less options for more money.
Agree with most of this to an extent, but I think Retro studios and Way forward may want to have a word with you about letting other developers work with your IP's.
I agree with all of this for the most part. I do remember buying brand new Super Nintendo games for $70 when they came out though. Which would be like $110 in 2015 dollars : P Still too fucking expensive though.
When I 15 guitar hero was the biggest thing in the world and every one I went to school with was nuts for it, I never could afford it. Now 8 years later good will and thrift store doesn't even know what to do with them, lol
NBA 2K16 is an example of bad games in the current gen, broken game from the start, micro-transactions coming out the ass, mediocre servers, and extremely unrealistic for a basketball simulator. (Stephen Curry can posterize 2 players, while my Michael Jordan card misses dunks with a 95 driving dunk.)
Call of duty: Sameshitagain warfare
IGN: "Best game yet" 9.0
Comment of the Year.
the score is actually 9.2
I cant blame apple, i love my ipod touch 5.
honestly for me the BEST console generation is 6th generation like the (PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, and *sigh*... the Dreamcast (JK)
The games were actually original too, not grey brown modern shooter warfare 7, some of the greatest games of all time were 6th generation and its really sad that the consoles are only getting worse.
ikr, SO many series started on there including kingdom hearts, Rachet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Katamari Damacy, Burnout, Killzone, Ect.
alpha_child The dreamcast is my fave
alpha_child I totally agree. When I played Halo 2 online for the first time, I never thought it could get better. Gamecube and PS2 were great too, who could forget Pikmin, or GOD who could forget _Shadow of the Colossus?!_
SotC is arguably one of the best games ever made.
alpha_child Dreamcast, most underrated system at the time.
I agree memory cards fucking rule! I miss memory cards. :(
Robstar1992 You mean internal harddrives? When I originally bought my X360 all I had was a 64 MB memory card - and it was fine for the first while. I still have said card, which has my XBL profile on it, so now if I go over to a friend's place to game, I can load up my profile np without having to do recovery BS. Seriously that card was crucial when my friends and I were big into Halo, I could bring it to a friends house and be on _my profile_ gaining experience and rating for my profile while my other friends were stuck as just 'guest.'
Memory cards rule, bring them back you fucks!
Shmandalf
Yeah, it's not water proof.
But, I'd say 1990 to 2000.)
why im back to retro gaming. New games are boring as shit for the most part and are no fun.
2020-2022: Hold our beer
What I hate: Games being made available digital only when (in other parts of the world) there is a physical release. Not only do you have to pay retail price for said (digital) game but you also need to buy a very uniquely made expensive memory card to store the game. Because of this the price to be able to play the game is doubled. Not only that buy some people strictly prefer (and only play) physical games. So a digital game that may be very fantastic and/or anticipated can easily fly under the radar (maybe even limited run games if the person doesn't buy things online).
I think true gaming and games for true gamers started to die after the ps1 to ps2 days. That era and anything before it I love. Retro Gaming 4 life
I'm a PS2 guy, myself.
(and almost every other developer)
Region Locking means I cannot play Mother 1,2,3 aka Earthbound trilogy
DRM killed Xbox One
Online Trophies/Achievements, I hate these because once the multiplayer community dries up they cannot be obtained.
achievements are also bullshit
johnhasaguitar Personally, I NEVER cared for them.
Morgan Freeman yep.. just seems like a way to artificially inflate play time while adding nothing new
johnhasaguitar I guess the only truly useful thing they can do is give proof of something to brag about. That's not even much though.
oh alpha...only if you had known just how bad it was gonna get in the 8th gen
Holy shit. Love this guy's passion for gaming and what gaming should be. I just subscribed because of this video. Thanks.
Newer video games lack the heart that was put into older ones. For the most part, anyway.
Joshua Ward you are so freaking right.
Joshua Ward Are you talking about indie games as well? Because if so, you need to pull your head out of your ass.
Juan Strong Oh get the fuck out. Everyone thinks these indie games are the savior of gaming. What nakes them special? What makes them feel like heart and passion was put into it? Nothing! Indie games are taken more lightly and are of lower quality! All of them are 2D platformers!
Boyd The Milkman *Cough* 5th and 6th generation! *Cough*
No dlc no bullshit, just strait gaming how it was intended to be,
doing it now mate working on programming
If Nintendo made PC compatible games then they would probably do just that.
People can buy and sell the games THEY OWN, developers don't deserve extra payment each time a game changes hands.
THIS generation is hands down the worst. Last gen (the one he's ranting about here) was a renaissance by comparison.
+PersonaPuppet ____ yup
You are so on Point Alpha, holy shit., where is the gaming industry going..nonono where has it GONE!!!
Well I think that when it comes to favourites people are bias depending on what they grew up with
PEScharlie yea straight up I agree. I dont really know what to think anymore. I just dont see myself collecting xbox or ps3 games ever and ive played a lot when they came out but when I look at them now its just like naaaa.Generations..I guess.
Elliott Knighves I know what you mean, in my opinion, 1983 - 2004 were the best years in Gaming!
I think alpha predicted destiny in this video.
yeah but destiny imo is a good game
mil gonzalez Yup, but Imo, Destiny could've been a great at it's launch if the first two expansions were just part of the original game.
Shmandalf What you said, It's exactly why i stopped playing, it's loot system is also a Vegas slot machine ffs
I agree a hundred percent the only fps game I enjoyed since BioShock was far cry 4 and primal but other than that they're getting old wish more games would be like fallout 4 give you the option of a 3rd person too
The seventh and eigth generations of gaming are more than disappointing.
I agree last gen you had games that stood out me personally BioShock Arkham series and etc. The current gen is awful games copying the older ones dying light is dead island I could go on but won't. But to me this gen as been the worse in years
Hopefully gen 8.5 is better.
This rant in 2024 is a weird sense of nostalgia and "you poor summer child"
+Sasque Uchija oh yeah and fucking games that makes you play a fucking app just to unlock in game items(Injustice,MKX)
pay to play online started on 7th gen with 360, if you think pay online is bad, you shouldnt praise the xbox 360
It's not just consoles, mass media as a whole has been decreasing in quality. Video games, music, anime, etc. I think I'm starting to go through a phase when I'm starting to not care about media entertainment anymore. :/
Searches for Quality agree as well. would also like to add movies to your list of media. there are some good movies here and there but....
The 80's almost KILLED home gaming
early 80's did kill the home gaming market. Nintendo rebuilt it with the NES in the mid 80's and 90's with the Super NES. Those where the good days of gaming.
Games are just as good back then as they are now. You just have to know where to look.
yeah but back then you played games to play games and escape from real life.
Westbrook03911
Please go play 3DS games, and then tell me that nowadays games just want to be as close to real life as possible.
This vid is a couple years old now, but it still holds true. My disappointment with the last generation in a proper rant.
I live in Canada and Star Wars Battlefront is $103
The deluxe edition??? Cause the standard game with taxes is 90/92 bucks
Nope. Standard Edition. EB Games website lists it at 89.99 in Canadian Dollars. With HST it comes to $101.70. Still gonna buy the piece of shit anyway.
+Michael Wittmann where do you live??? For me its 79,99 standard one and the deluxe one is 89,99 i just verified
Just checked. It is the deluxe edition for 89.99. I couldn't find the standard but I'm guessing you're right. 79.99.
try amazon.
This generation of gaming is still disappointing. Too bad there aren't anymore Wild Arms games. I guess it's back to more retro-gaming.
Fuckin love Wild Arms. especially the first two. The opening theme of the first game is so bad ass.
best first person shooter ever (DOOM)
Charles thekinglov Truest comment ever.
I have a PS4 and a Wii U.
The Wii U is far better.
If the XBone and ps4 are PC's
*why do they have to pay to play online.
*why do mods not come out for them.
*why do updates for games cost the developers to upload them
Consoles main goal is to take control of every media outlet and they are putting gaming to the side. pretty soon Microsoft will announce their very own cable service.
Amen brother Risa Sardónica
Kill4ism First Valve is going to compete with consoles with Steam Machines. No Valve is not taking bribes from Sony or Microsoft. In fact Gabe N said "Windows 8 is a train wreck". Also Valve still does make games but they wait until a game is ready and very good instead of making shovelware every year like EA. Just wait Steam Machines can and will be crushing the current gen consoles.
How about the fact that every single video game that has come out in the last couple of years are so easy that a 6-year-old can f****** beat it?
Funny how after all these years this video is still relevant I had to stop and look at the date after hearing some things, but overall this could have been posted yesterday and still made sense.
nope this is the worse....
Kid I know Correct english please.
Four years later and things have only gotten fucking worse.
I'm late to the party for you, man, but seeing this makes me wonder what the generation review for this new generation will come out.
NIce rant! Sad thing about it, it's 3 years old and things gone worse :(
Unlocking content through playing the game -----> unlocking content through buying the dlc.
this deserves so much more views
I agree with everything you said in the video. Except, the online pass part. Battlefield 3 had that online pass requirement and if you bought it used you had to buy the online pass in the main menu of the game. Not sure if every game gives that option but I wouldn't doubt it.
LOL, I was just thinking about what your opinion on the current state of Resident Evil is and I see a Resident Evil rant video on the playlist. That's next this evening :D
This video was made almost 3 years ago, and we are in the next generation, and we still have the same problem.
R.I.P. Chromehounds, good thing M.A.V. is in development and i'm an alpha member
AlphaOmegaSin is like Garfiled on steroids talking about videogames: ¡damn! I'm totally subscribing.
Oh yeah
Video games*
Wow ! didn't check when this video was put online until 15 min in .
3:23 brings up valid point. but the skylanders, and disney infinity figures are used in game and therefore have an extended purpose
I miss the 16-bit era, 32/64-bit era and the Sixth generation era already.
18:48 Hitman comes to mind here. You make some excellent points in this video, totally agree!!
Thats why i have NES, SNES, PS1 and all of the library of the games for all of them emulated on my PC.
I'm glad SOMEBODY is addressing these issues! AMEN, AlphaOmegaSin! AMEN! :D
been gaming since 1978 and i don't think i have managed to complain this much in that entire time... total...
it's gonna give him grey hairs surely?
This rant is brilliant, EVERYTHING nowadays is made with the "fuck you, give us your money" attitude. EVERYTHING.
6 Years later, gaming is worse than it ever has been. 2011 Was a good year compared to the disastrous shit that comes out developer's asses now.
Never thought I'd encounter a gamer who was actually incredibly reasonable and makes good points.
Yeah Alpha I feel your pain about region lock. I am from Brazil, and here we have the same region as Australia, so shit that comes out region locked for USA, for Europe or japan, doesn't work on my 360, it's so shitty that i couldn't even play GTA IV when it came out I had to buy a Ps3 because of that
lol as this vid goes on the more and more respect I have for you alpha. you got my sub
I remamber the story when some big company (idk if that was microsoft or EA) said that multi is a future and nobody want anymore singleplayer games. It was like 2 months before Skyrim premiere. Well guess what happend after Skyrim was released.....
Death - live in LA, one of my all time favorite album's
I love the reference to Versus mode in re5. Paid 5 bucks for something already on the disc.
Pc might actually be less broken and complicated than xbone and ps4
Agree with most of this to an extent, but I think Retro studios and Way forward may want to have a word with you about letting other developers work with your IP's.
I agree with all of this for the most part. I do remember buying brand new Super Nintendo games for $70 when they came out though. Which would be like $110 in 2015 dollars : P
Still too fucking expensive though.
I can see Secret of Mana in the background there.
Harsh rant, yet on target for the current generation.
I'm just curious what that "White", spotted stain is on his couch?
Its like 80 bucks after tax up here in Canada. Buying a game is a life changing decision.
