- Hey guys!
Today's video features what it's like to attend a university in Japan. I explain the key differences between college life in America / Japan that I've noticed, and what it's like to be taking courses in multiple languages.
I have to admit, I recorded this a few weeks ago, so that's why there's still cherry blossoms in the video!
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed, and I'll see you again next week.
xx,
Mana

Ayyy i loved this! In the middle of sorting through my options for exchange next year and i really appreciate videos like this! Thank you!!
glad to hear that you enjoyed it!! if you have any questions let me know & I'll me happy to answer them! Japan is a great country- if you do end up going there I'm 99.98% that you'll love it!!
Thank you for the great video! I just had de pre-application interview for the Global MBA and will definitely apply. Your video helped me to have a closer idea of how the campus is. I'll be traveling with my wife and baby girl. Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Thank you for commenting!
I’m so glad to hear that you found this video helpful :) I’m currently in Los Angeles rigjt now, but will be back in Kyoto in a few months. I’ll be posting more Kyoto / Doshisha related videos then, so hopefully it’ll help you out as well! I wish you and your family the best of luck with all of your future endeavors :)
Have a great rest of your day!
@@ManaKimura hey Mana! I'm just seeing your reply, sorry for the delay. I'm glad to know that you are going back soon since we will probably meet (hopefully). I have a question to ask, if you don't mind. Do you know about students traveling with their families under a Dependent Visa program? I cannot find information from the Japanese Government website, and I am finding hard to get in touch with the embassy. TIA!
@@gonzalosilvaes haha no worries! I actually don't have know any information about students traveling with their families under a dependent visa program :/ have you tried contacting the office at Doshisha University? maybe they'll be able to provide you with information there! hopefully everything goes smoothly for you and your family! :)
@@ManaKimura yes, I asked the admissions team about this matter and they apologized for not being able to help with this kind of information. All they want is to ensure the students handle by themselves the visa matters. Hence I called the Japanese embassy in Chile and they confirmed that the dependant visa is still available, and no changes have been made to this program because of the f.. NG virus 😂
Oh, I’m glad to hear that you were able to contact the embassy! Hopefully everything goes smoothly & you’ll be able to relocate successfully with your family in a few months :) I wish the best of luck!
I'll be attending Doshisha this fall, so thanks for this video; it was helpful to be introduced to what the campus looks like a little bit. ☺

hey Natalie! sorry for the late reply. you must be at Doshisha right now then huh! hope you're having the best time in Kyoto :)
@@ManaKimura Omg sorry I never noticed you replied for some reason but thank you! Yes I was there from Fall 2019 to 2020 and I loved it so much! The Imperial Palace and Kamogawa are like, my favorite places on Earth now. 💜 I actually came back to this video because I was feeling nostalgic. 😂

Hi, Mana! I recently was accepted into Doshisha University for grad school and will be moving to Kyoto in September from LA. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions about your experiences at Doshisha and in Kyoto! 😊
Such a great video! Can I ask if you're doing the Global MBA course? Is it compulsory to take classes taught in Japanese as well, or can you do only English? Best of luck with the rest of your course :)
hey Priya! sorry for the late reply! no im not doing the global MBA course, im actually still an undergrad! If you need specific information you can contact the Doshisha office. they can speak English there so they should be able to help you out!
Hey, were you in Fall or Spring in Kyotot? Which season would you prefer? :)
Hi Maria!
I actually lived in Kyoto for my first two years of college, so I experienced both spring & fall! out of all four seasons, I would say spring & fall are the best times to be in Kyoto. during the spring you can experience cherry blossom season, but in the fall you can see all the leaves changing color (its called kouyou in Japanese)! Kyoto is specifically known to have beautiful kouyou in the fall, so if you were looking to go specifically to Kyoto, I would recommend the fall. BUT both seasons are equally amazing, and you definitely can't go wrong with your visit during either season!
hope I was able to help out! have a great rest of your day :)
@@ManaKimura Thank you very much for your reply! ^-^ I want to study a semester in Japan, maybe the same University as you :D But I didn't know which season I should go. I was afraid that I won't be able to do much in the fall semester because it's getting dark early.
Have a great day as well!! :)
Hello there!! I find the video really interesting, and i really like the part where you show us around the campus!! 🤩
I'm deciding on enrolling to Doshisha next year in the ILA business course, and I'm just wondering if there are other courses I can take outside of the major courses (ex. IT, cultural studies)
Sending love from Indonesia!! 🇮🇩
I was wondering if you applied from the US, and if so what was the process like? I love the video btw!!!
Hi Leah! Thanks for the comment :)
To answer your question- I applied from the US!
I actually applied through the common app, so it wasn't too difficult / complicated. I answered the common app essay question, wrote a supplementary essay for Doshisha, sent in my info with all my extracurriculars & all that. honestly, going through the common app made the process really simple! but if you weren't planning on applying through the common app, I know Doshisha also has a separate app process in which you can apply directly to the school w/o using that portal.
I made a video explaining the application process in more detail if you were interested- ua-cam.com/video/1AXZCh60VeQ/v-deo.html
Let me know if you have any other questions! choosing to study abroad for college was the best decision I made so far in my life, so I would love to be able to help you out with your process :)
Hi
Thank you for the video. Btw, is medium of instruction in ILA totally in English?
Like will I be able to learn and study totally in English?
Great video 👍🏻 Is it difficult to use English only in daily life of Kyoto?
thank you! it might be a little difficult if you can't speak japanese, but since kyoto is one of the bigger cities in japan, there's actually been a lot of english signs set up lately to help people navigate the city! people can't speak perfect english, but most of the time they'll be able to speak broken english- probably enough for you to get around if you're lost. people in japan are really nice most of the time, so you'll have no difficulty getting around if you just ask! and google maps / google translate is an absolute life saver for my friends that can't speak japanese, so that could help you out as well :)
hey Shao-Ming! sorry for the late reply! I wouldn't say it's the easiest and most tourist friendly city, but as long as you stay in the tourist locations you should be fine! the older generation struggles with English, but if you talk to someone in the younger generation, they can usually speak English well :)
Also, is the workload too much? I want to srudy business as well here and I'm wondering.
Sorry for asking so many questions haha, will this degree allow you to work in Japan???
is studying at Doshisha recommended in terms of finding a job in and outside Japan? keeping into consideration the university ranking globally and nationally.
super valid question!
1) if you're finding a job in japan, doshisha is a super well known school in japan. i didn't know this until i entered, but apparently it's similar in rank to what the ivy leagues are in the US! haha so the alumni network is great after you graduate for finding a job if that's what you were concerned with too. lots of my senpai have found amazing jobs after graduating (google, apple, amazon, etc) but all in japan though
2) as for finding a job outside of japan, i'm not 100% sure. a lot of the senpai that i know either stay in japan to work in japan or go to grad school in a different country! i know there are people that have gotten solid jobs outside of japan, but i don't know that many in my immediate circle of friends.
hope this was helpful!
@@ManaKimura yes very helpful and I really appreciate that you took the time to give me a detailed question. I have one more :D so you can find a good job in japan even though the program is in English? cause a lot of people say it is better to do a program in Japanese to work in Japan.
@@Basamia of course, anytime!
my program was in english, but i found a job in japan! a lot of my classmates also found jobs in japan as well! i think there's definitely a growing demand in english speakers that understand the japanese market because japan is a very specific target market for a lot of companies so you shouldnt have too much difficulty finding a job post graduation :)
@@ManaKimura thank you thank you ^^
Sorry i have more questions :D ...
it is a fall program for 2 years. do i book a roundtrip ticket? or are we considered resident and we dont need a returned ticket. if we need to then when the return should booked? i honestly couldnt understand the schedule on the university website. there is a long recess in march.

Hi! I'm thinking about applying to this university but are scores like sat or act required? I tried to find this info on their website but found nothing ):
you know where to go to apply? Ive looked on the school's website and im still confused
Hi, I'm trying to sort out my options for my exchange next year. I was wondering if you stay at the dormitory or if you rent like your own appartment or studio. I would prefer the second option for myself and was wondering if you could tell about the process. Excuse my english, it's not my first language.
Hey i wanna apply for the business course in the fall of 2020. Was it difficult to be accepted? I'm worried.
I have my interview with Doshisha tmwr. Any advice lol
Which college you were in? Imadegawa?
Hi I have a question this is my dream school and I was wondering, Do they teach japanese? If not does that mean we'll need to learn it on our own?
Hi Mariah!
Glad to hear that you're looking into Doshisha! :)
Don't worry if you can't speak Japanese b/c Doshisha offers language classes in all levels! Once you enter the school, you'll take a Japanese language exam & you'll be placed into a class that teaches you Japanese depending on your level.
Hope this was helpful!
xx
@@ManaKimura Thank you so much for answering my question! I also have another question how was the application process?
Hi! sorry for the late reply- I actually made a video about the application process: ua-cam.com/video/1AXZCh60VeQ/v-deo.html
I'm thinking of filming another sit down video where I answer questions about moving to Japan, what you should know, etc. in the next few weeks! let me know if there's anything you want me to answer in that & I'll be sure to include it in that video :)
i came through reading about Neesima Shimeta , i believe he is the foinder of this university .
i didnt know you were taking German!
Do you study in Japanese ?
I really need your help if you go to Doshihsha university!
