    A little surprised this hasn't been noted already - but this is the great ROBERT MERRILL singing, Merrill Miller was one of his early stage names.

    Those were pre-World War II US Army uniforms. Search your browser for "Uniforms of the United States Army 1939." One Website states, "some units were still using pre-war equipment in 1945 while other units had the latest issue."

      My dad was drafted into the US Army in January 1941 in the first draft. He was sent to Fort Ord, California. His division (the 7th) was equipped with all new stuff, eg. M1 Garands and WWII uniforms. Other units they maneuvered against were equipped with WWI gear. There weren't enough tanks so they had trucks with "Tank" signs running around.

    Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
    What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
    Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
    O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
    And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
    Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
    Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
    O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?🇺🇸🎼🎵🎶🎙😔

    Lily Marlene was a German song that was equally popular in English to both the Allies and the Germans. It is a forgotten fact of history that it was the one song that was being sung by Germans, British and American solders at the same time. Everybody performed it; USA: Dinah Shore, Margaret Whiting, Marlene Dietrich, Vaughn Monroe, Bing Crosby, and many others. UK: Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields, and others. Germany: Marlene Dietrich (Until she was banned) and many other German performers.

    This melody is out of this world, it turns everything that is a legacy of human thinking on its head.

      @DinahIsMyGal  6 років тому +2

      Actually it was a song that came out in the late 30's and has the distinction of being popular with the allies and the Germans. Marlene Dietrich sang it in both languages. In 1942 Hitler offered her to come to Germany but she very publicly insulted him than started working feverishly in the USO entertaining our troops. Lily Marlene was the one song allied and axis had in common during the war. It wasn't as popular with the US solders as it was with the Brits but nevertheless it was known by all.
