  • These are the Willamette Falls in Oregon City, south of Portland. What a stunningly rich industrial history you find here. This outlook over the area is one of the most beautiful sights in the United States.
Alas, it will soon be gone as it will be razed and replaced by condos and a shopping district. I wish they could have worked the existing buildings into the redevelopment plan.
What you see are several different industries. From left to right (early to late) in the video:
    • A hydroelectric power plant built in. You can see the water exhaust from the four turbine water. The total capacity of the power plant is 16 MW. This is equal to the power of only one Mingyang offshore wind turbine (model MySE 16.0-242).
    • The original Willamette pulp and paper mill built from 1893 and onward. Then two more paper mills built over the years.
    • A woolen mill.
The video demonstrates the incredible importance of water. Be it oceans, lakes or rivers, human prosperity is always higher and living conditions better where there is plenty of natural water. This is why Tellusant has collected water proximity data for the world's 2500 largest cities.
