I only discovered this game recently on the Taito's hits PS2 collection too, absolutely loved it. One of those discovered games that makes you sad they weren't part of your childhood.
But if you do like these arcade games where' you're doing multiple jobs at once, you really should check out Super Pipeline II and Electro Eddie ont he Amstrad. They feel like they should have been in the arcade, but sadly weren't.

Larry, I'll be ordering the 2600 homebrew of Zoo Keeper soon. The final version has far less flicker than the WIP shown in the video. I was going to order it yesterday but as it is I have a total of 8 orders totaling over $700 waiting to ship at AtariAge. I asked Al to hold them back so that he can ship them all together. Games for the 2600, 7800, and Jaguar.

Keep 'em coming Pat. I don't even care if I have no clue what game you're making a video about just listening to you talk about the game and watching the history unfold is enough for me. Nostalgia crack even if I don't get the nostalgia seems to be enough for me.

I first learned of this game from one of those "Win at Arcade Games!" books I got as a kid. Never got to play it at all back then, as to this day I've never even seen an actual cabinet, but later on with MAME (and later on the Taito Legends collection), it became a favorite.

while the game was available in kit form like you mention it also was available in dedicated form as seen at the end of your video in the orange and blue taito cab withe the lion and zeke near the coin door
you can control the direction of the animals as they come out of the "cage" as they always run away from what direction you are facing and to get the real points you need all those suckers out of the cage and running preferably in a group for BIG point jumps thats how you get the high scores, dont worry about containing the animals, jump them!
great video as always patman! cant wait for the next one! see if you can dig any info up on the atari video game "Power Drive"

One of my all time favorite games. Finishing the stage getting the animal bonus sounds was my favorite part. When I first started messing with MAME, this game was my go to, whenever i booted it up. I remember I used to play this at the movie theater near my house. I had just seen the movie Cloak and Dagger, with Dabney Coleman, if anyone remembers that movie. Movie theory says, it's a prequel to Fight Club :-P Great Video. I love your movie references when stating the year of the game you are reviewing.

Zoo Keeper was so original that nobody else created a game that came close to this vintage title. I used to spend a whole afternoon looking for empty pop bottles, so that I could get a couple of quarters to play this title at a local corner store. This game was and still is simply astounding. Also, you are correct that the latest ATari 2600 port simply looks fantastic! I am still awestruck how some current developers are able to push the 2600 hardware miles beyond what was originally intended. I would also hope that someone makes an Atari 8 bit version in the future as well.

This was one of my favorite obscure games back then! I remember the game was tough to find, I didn't see it in the popular arcades by me... it was like in a laundromat or a random store or something lol. but when I did come across it I enjoyed playing it! And happy to have it on my emulator at home! But just like back then, it's still a tough game!

Midcoin made 3 games only: A.D. 2083, Wall Crash and Wink (those last two are some sorta clone of Breakout). Too bad it's all what I have found out so far but I will continue dig. I used to play this all the time at Arnie's in Westport CT. I try to play it on MAME on the Wii but the control is not very good because I think the arcade used a special analog joystick because it always seems to not move correctly when you round the corners on the box you run around on trying to put the bricks back and jumping over animals seems to be harder than I remember from the arcade.

I experienced a bit of that while playing it on the Mame emulator But I thought it was either my Xbox 360 joystick or my lack of hands.

I never heard of this game so thanks for this. I find it quite funny that Zoo Keeper borrows elements from Donkey Kong so in return Nintendo looks like they borrowed the Zelda name for the Zelda series.

I have never seen the actual arcade game back in the 80’s,although I have it on the PS2 & looks just like the one shown.

Oh, Zelda. Why do you keep getting kidnapped by various zoo animals?
I've never actually played this game or had seen it at the arcades, but it certainly looks like fun. I'll certainly check it out. For a time, I was addicted to a puzzle game for the Nintendo DS which went by the same name and I assumed that the arcade game was the same thing.

No mention of the glaring similarity the zookeeper guy has with Luigi? Or that the damsel in distress is named Zelda? Maybe I missed it?

    • @PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries
      @PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries  4 роки тому

No because Zelda came out three years later on the NES and the guy looking like Luigi wasn't introduced until the following year In Mario Bros. All pure coincidence
