These beautiful kimonos and obies are extremely expensive and usually handed down through the family unless sponsored. Much practice is done to prepare for this type of walking. If you listen to the music there is a cadence that they step to. During the years I lived there, I was always fascinated by how their culture has tried to stay true to their ethnicity. 🎉

Back in the day this was a courtesan ritual walk to her well-to-do client's, just a very flashy way of showing off one's wealth in pre-modern Japan, nowadays just a remnant of a practice now defunct.❤
This is not a geisha this is an Oiran and she is performing the Oiran dochu. It's actually incredibly sad. If this were Edo period Japan and this were real, you'd be in the pleasure district and she would be on her way to meet her extremely wealthy client. Her client must meet her three times before they can become 'familiar', or in other words, have s*x. She is an indentured servant forced to learn how to be the perfect woman and prost*tute from the time she was a child.
This is the "Edo Yoshiwara Oiran Dochu" held at the Ichiyozakura Festival on Sunday, April 9, 2023. The courtesan, who wears three-toothed high geta and walks in a straight line, is so beautiful that it is truly a sight to behold.
