  • "Words are all I have to take your heart away." In this live rendition on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, Barry gives those words such a plaintive vulnerability that it leaves me almost speechless. Robin is on the piano.

Very moving song especially the emotions Barry conveys. It’s not hard to understand why he won songwriter of the year award in Australia when he was just 17 years old. Both Robin and Maurice were there with Robin at the piano.

To quote "Decades - The Bee Gees in the1960's", "Words" was written after an argument. Barry had argued with someone and Robin had argued with someone (not with each other for a change, LOL). Robin said "The arguments were about absolutely nothing but both of us were in the same mood after that. They were just words - that is what the song is all about. Words can make you happy or words can make you sad." Prefer Barry...or anyone....without the beard. You picked up on the beautiful tremolo (as opposed to vibrato). I think Robin's "smile" was a message to their dad who always said to his sons, "Tell Robin to smile", LOL. A beautiful song that will endure.
Yoo hoo, Mo is in green on bass. No beard. ☺This was their band when they arrived in the UK, buddies who left Australia earlier and was their band for their first couple of LP's. A tight little live band. The government wanted to deport Vince and Colin because they weren't British and overstayed. The fans went nuts and protested at the Prime Minister's house and chained themselves to the gates at Buckingham Palace. They stayed.

I think it was the Australian performance of this song where the audience joined in... really fun! Maurice is right there to Barry's left in the green jacket, Robin on piano, and the other guitarist is Vince Melouney. Colin Peterson on drums.

If you're referring to '89, that's one of my absolute favorite performances!🥰Love the way the audience participates with Barry & Mo....& have to admit Barry's little bouts of laughter & giggling are so flippin adorable😍😘!!

'To Love Somebody' and 'Words'. These couple of songs of them out of the sixties had a great impact to other singers, which covered it.

Oh my heart. Being on Ed Sullivan was a BIG deal! I think it was 1968. Maurice was behind Barry in a green suit. You don’t see Robin playing ANY instrument very often. He loved being on TV. Too bad they chose a song without the other two. Hmm. The other guitarist is Vince Malouney and the drummer is Colin Peterson. Great choice. Thank you! Love your input.

One of my favourite Bee Gees songs of all time. To Love Somebody is another. Barry could sing the phone book and make it sound awesome. Robin had such a unique voice and also Maurice. They all blended so brilliantly with their harmonies.

What most people don't seem to realize is that Barry had no words for two years as a child when he did not speak after a terrible accident that put him in the hospital with horrible burns. He got his words back from God and then spent his life sharing them with the world.

Maybe this is where Robin got pissed off. Barry front and center on a national American show, and Robin is way in the back. They should have had him close up.

There was much more to it. Barry was getting a lot of "A" sides although several of their biggest early hits were Robin's leads like their first #1, "Massachusetts". "Jumbo" (Barry) was a flop while the "B" side was "The singer sang his song" (Robin), a lovely tune. Same with "First of May" (Barry) being an "A" side and "Lamplight" (Robin) being a "B". Both nice songs but Stigwood promised "Lamplight" would be the single and it wasn't so Robin thought Stigwood was favoring Barry and he wasn't getting any respect. It could have been easily remedied by issuing a double "A" side like the Beatles often did. At that time they were still very young (many people don't realize just how young they were) and egos got involved. Barry actually said he was quitting The Bee Gees too but Robin was made the scapegoat. Robin admitted he was overly sensitive and overreacted but felt he "was in a whirlwind" and needed to get out for his sanity. The important thing was they got back together. Robin showed up at Barry's house and in that one evening they wrote "Lonely Days" and "How can you mend a broken heart" together.

@@nelerhabarber5602 - The singing was live BUT do you see any amps or cables to the guitars? Why did you pick out only one person? 😕😕 Robin did compose on piano and guitar. His wife said often at night he would be in the living room playing the piano. Early on in Australia Barry played guitar, Mo bass, Hugh drums and Robin piano. Play nice for once.
