  • MINI ROAD TRIP IN MY CAMPERVAN - Solo Female Van Life in the Scottish Borders (pt2) - Visit Scotland
This video shows the day after my amazing stopover at Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve, near Moffat. I had paid a £3 parking fee for 24 hours there and the Ranger had permitted me to stay overnight.
Here's the link to that video - • OFF GRID WILD CAMPING ...
I leave the Grey Mare's Tail and head east along the A708 towards the Loch of the Lowes & St Mary's Loch. I take a look at the monument there remembering the Scottish Poet, James Hogg and drive up to the Tibbie Shiels Inn, sadly no longer a pub but there's a basic campsite there. From there I drive a little further on to St Mary's Kirkyard. It's only a short walk up but it is quite steep! Worth the effort though with such views and the tranquility there made it somewhere I wanted to stop a while. I then drove on, stopping at the Philliphaugh Estate, Selkirk for some lunch before reaching my home for the next 2 nights (Melrose Gibson C&MC Site) where I planned to stay while Storm Claudio was due to visit for that night and the following day.

Hi, I’m Sue from Lancashire, UK.
This channel is just me getting out and about in a converted VW Campervan, occasionally with friends but mostly solo. Fun, laughs, moans, groans, mistakes, and successes. It’ll all be in here!
I’ll share new places, hints, tips, any info I discover and whatever else I think you might find useful.
I began vlogging my solo travels in ‘Vanya’, to help me re-engage with life following the sudden, tragic loss of my husband nearly 3 years ago now. Working through a very complex grief has been the hardest & loneliest challenge imaginable. Some days it still knocks me completely sideways and probably always will. I really don't know. All I do know is that life can change forever and irreversibly in an instant.
By returning to the vanlife we had enjoyed so much together & embracing a new found love of video creation and vlogging, I’m continuing to build strength and balance to move forward through this completely unforeseen and unwanted next chapter of life.
Thanks for joining me. The company is nice.
    Sue x

Sue, I have been following you for about a year now, but have remained a silent observer till now. This one I could not let pass... for you, see, that is family territory. My Grandather (and two generations before him) were shepherds in the Meggat Valley - now flooded for the Meggat Water Reservoir. That twice great grandad was a contemporary and acquaintance of James Hogg... until he started 'gang alang streets aboon us...' The family name was Shiel and they are to be found buried in Caddonfoot yard. I was born in Galashiels. My grandad had to relocate his family and farm up into the hills above Gala.
Your video, with your gentle and appreciative style, brought a huge flood of nostalgia! I have spent a lifetime globetrotting and settled in OZ - life circled as it inevitably does and I landed back in the Bonny Land nine years back - but in Dunoon (Argyll). After three years of almost total incarceration, I am starting to get antsy and am dreaming of a van ... meanwhile, I stow away on a fair few other's trips, like yours!!! Safe and happy driving dear lady. YAM xx

      Hello Yam!
Thanks so much for leaving your lovely comment. Not only is it always nice to hear from whoever is watching the videos, but your story is fascinating after having visited this area.
What an upsetting moment it must’ve been for your Grandfather and the family when the valley they had farmed for generations was flooded to create Megget Reservoir. If the weather hadn’t changed I was going to spend a night at that point in the van. Maybe next time.
A connection to James Hogg too! So the family name of Shiel, are you a relation of Tibbie Shiel? I read up a little on her too which I didn’t fit into the video. An interesting lady, a survivor.
Your life has taken you far but it doesn’t surprise me that you’d return to Scotland. I would consider relocating there myself!
I hope you fulfil your dream of van travel. There’s nothing quite like it.
Thanks for the very kind wishes and best wishes to you too. Take care, Sue 😊 xx

I held back with my food review - overpriced, minimal portions, soggy quiche, dripping wet 'salad', undercooked potato wedges, but a reasonable enough coleslaw! Carol, I think you will enjoy Abbotsford, there's an interesting audio tour and going at a quiet time of year meant no crowds so I got a real feel of the place. The gardens obviously didn't have anything in bloom but the house, grounds and private chapel were enough. Oh, and the food in the visitor centre cafe was excellent! Take care both 😊

Doing all this without Bri is still weird, it still feels lonely but in a more and more familiar way that it is becoming the norm (whether I wanted it or not) if you will. I will always miss Bri being by my side in this world and will always crave his company, it just gets easier to deal with now as I'm accepting he's gone. As a result, I'm learning a lot more about myself and finding out who I am now after having had Bri in my life. It's a strange experience in your 50s to not really know who you are anymore. If that sounds odd, sorry! I hope you achieve your dream and get to visit Scotland! ATB, Sue.

How do Sue. I've really loved you Scotland trip so far. I always found when I travelled through Scotland that if had a very etherial spiritual vibe to it.The countryside always gave me a massive feeling of freedom and joy and your videos have captured that feeling beautifully. Its a joy to watch your channel and if I ever manage to do half as good a job on mine I'd be very very happy. I hope one day our paths cross and I can tell you in person. This was a wonderfully uplifting video which I enjoyed very much. respect and best regards as always- Kenny

Thanks for another lovely vlog. I am reminded, watching you drive around the Scottish Borders of all the lovely drives I used to go on around Wales. I've only ever been to Edinburgh on a train from London and then as a passenger in the van (driven by a friend) I hired to move me and my dog to Belfast in 2008. I'm hoping to see more eventually, but for now your vlogs will suffice. Thank you for the reminder to just slow down and take in the view - something we could all benefit fro doing. I hope you have a good weekend. C. x

And talking of shepherds... when you mentioned that he was both a poet and a shepherd I was put in mind of John Clare (1793 - 1864) (I had to go and double-check that I wasn't in fact confusing Clare with Hogg) who wrote perhaps the best love poem for a love never actually declared:
I loved thee, though I told thee not,
    Right earlily and long,
Thou wert my joy in every spot,
    My theme in every song.
And when I saw a stranger face
    Where beauty held the claim,
I gave it like a secret grace
    The being of thy name.
And all the charms of face or voice
    Which I in others see
    Are but the recollected choice
Of what I felt for thee.
    A sad little verse I think. ❤.

I am very skeptical about some of these food revues. We have been to some very sketchy places that have good revues and we are very far from food snobs. As for no camping I have always regarded camping as pitching a tent not parking up in a van.

Poets and their work fascinates me although I don't always understand it. This by William Wordsworth is easy enough to decipher though:
No more of old romantic sorrows,
For slaughtered Youth or love-lorn Maid!
With sharper grief is Yarrow smitten,
And Ettrick mourns with her their Poet dead.

    • @CamperVanya
      @CamperVanya  Рік тому +1

I read that when I was reading up. Apparently their friendship had waned towards the end but Wordsworth was quite affected by his death and wrote the poem for “the Border Minstrel”
