I'm old enough to remember the first Gulf War in the early 90s. That's when CNN became more popular here in Europe 🇪🇺. CNN had embedded reporters on the front line, something that few European outlets had. For a while, they were everyone's news source. I hope that, when they all go down, there will still be media that can report from anywhere in the world. That takes resources, a correspondence network, that kind of thing. Not the sort of thing your average podcaster or UA-camr can easily afford. We don't want people like Rupert Murdoch, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk to fill that void, do we?
I ended my Sling TV subscription after many, many years because of an impending 20%+ rate increase with no commensurate increase in service or channel selections. Sling TV was my source of cable news. I was the only one in the house that watched it and I was down to about only an hour or two a day.
Chris, great piece! I stopped watching MSNBC and CNN because I was hearing what I wanted to hear. Not what I should have been hearing. I enjoy your input into the conversation! I have been watching your channel since the begining!
I don't even turn on my television...ever. 44 inches of it doing nothing but gathering dust. I use a 10 inch (diagonal measure) tablet that i use mostly for UA-cam and my game playing and my movie viewing and I don't miss the TV.
I haven’t had cable in over a decade now. I mostly miss randomly tuning into Food Network and seeing someone drop a sugar sculpture the spent the last 8 hours creating. Do I miss the 24 hour news cycle I never could stand before? Nah.
When I was a teenager in the 90’s my parents were very concerned that my newly purchased album of Megadeth’s Rust in Peace would rot my mind. Turned out it was cable news that rotted theirs.
With all due respect, too many talking heads spouting "analysis" instead of straight news. I think people are tired of the inside the Beltway commentary regardless of which side you're on.
I am done with political news in general. I watched the occasional MSNBC or CNN post to UA-cam, but no more. News in the Trump era is just too exhausting because EVERY DAMN DAY there's some new crisis or stupid story about things that would have been EASILY preventable if the captain of the ship used his brain rather than reacting purely by instinct. I can't take the continuous stream of stupidity anymore.
As long as I have been watching MSNBC, it has always offered a combination of news and opinion, and it was easy to distinguish between the two. What I seemed to notice a year or two after the end of Trump’s first term is that the percentage of real news got smaller. Instead of reporting about the Biden administration, the shows’ talking heads were mostly cheerleading for Joe Biden.
My family and I in 🇨🇦🇬🇧🇦🇺🇰🇪 are so fortunate to live in countries where cable news is far less important than traditional broadcast news sources. FOX failed in the UK entirely. Between them, BBC, ITV, and Sky news channels, websites, and radio account for over 90 percent of broadcast news in the UK.
Cable news isn’t that important in the USA, we have national networks like ABC, NBC, PBS, and CBS. Also UA-cam is an American company headquartered in my home state of California, as are many websites.
I’m sick to death of pundits on cable news. Just give me the news and I will draw my own conclusions. I long for Wales Kronkite, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw style of delivering the news. There are some on CNN I enjoy but many of them are boring as hell.
My 38 year old son hasn't had cable since he moved out, he uses his computer and a TV as a monitor to watch subscription programs. Many young people just don't watch TV at all. I saw the age of antenna TV die and now it's cables turn.
Broadcast in all its forms is outmoded; streaming is the new way to consume live content. Added to this, traditional cable news is often out of touch, yacking about stuff no one cares about. I put a CNN stream on on Amazon just now. There was some boring sports talk that was suddenly interrupted by some lemonade ad that I quickly turned off because I can't stand commercials. Meanwhile, on UA-cam, I get what I want, when I want, from all sorts of different sources.
Cable is destined to follow in the path of the ICE and legacy automakers. Complacency, arrogance and greed will always be the downfall of those who overdose on it.

I am about two years away from retirement and the youngest of eight siblings. Having watched my older siblings during their retirement years, I have made a promise to myself that I will NEVER watch the news once I pull the plug on the grind of Corporate America! Far too many of my siblings just sit there all day watching this constant “doom loop” of despair that spews from MSNBC or Fox News (with a family as large as mine, all political ideologies are well represented and TRUST me when I tell you, NONE of them have the moral high ground!) and I swear all it does is turn them into angry, unreasonable screeds……….😵💫
I think you're speaking to the 40 & under crowd. Which I'm one of. So, elderly people won't switch from cable because it's "too complicated." Having cable is like their idea of a membership. I have 2 elderly parents. They feel like they belong with fox blaring on the TV at all hours. I hate it when I visit. It's loud and obnoxious. But that's their thing. But most people, now, are listening to clips on social media. And they don't know their values. So they'll allow Joe Rogan, or you, Chris, to dictate their opinions. And once you click...the algorithm is set. You're going to be directed down a path based on your previous clicks...and that will dictate younger minds. Trump utilizes long form mainstream media to imitate short form social media. If that makes sense.
Hey Chris. I understand the sentiment of taking the middle and it's fair to call out bad stuff on both sides. Sadly doing so is often pretty dishonest because the act of trying to be balanced when one side does far more shady stuff in volume and scope than the other side on a day to day basis. It would be pretty dishonest to give equal weight and coverage in a futile attempt to be in the middle. If all things were relatively equal then this might work... but it's really not. Giving a both/sides angle also does not work when the other side of an issue is often of late demonstrably untrue and easily fact checked . Cable News (it's owners and producers) have no stomach for possibly pissing off their advertisers and losing access to politicians that they would rather dilute their journalism into some sort of head in the sand pablum.
The cable TV era will not be over until streaming services no longer do blackouts for local sports broadcasts. If you pay for content, you should get it,regardless of what happens on cable or airwaves.
Yeah I agree. Down here in New Zealand...we really had only 2 main TV news outlets TV1 and TV3. After covid the decline was dramatic. Basically TV3 is gone for news. TV1 cut back on midday news and current affair shows. I spend 99% of viewership on podcasts. 😔. I'm worried about Trump/Maga going after these shows now. 🤔 😡
Multi-family communtiies (condos, townhouses and villas) come with a monthly association fee and this includes traditional cable packages. Refuse to pay? Only if you are willinging to not also pay the association fee which will be addressed quickly by the management company using liens and possible confiscation of unit. Cable gets lots of customers and if owners are unhappy the only choice the ruling board will allow is another traditional cable provider using the same model. So over all, fewer subscribers due to streaming but traditional cable is still here.
most condo associations have a board that is responsible to the homeowners -- they are the ones who make these decisions. You can petition the board, or run for election to the board and have a say in what the fees cover.
I've never taken a journalism class. I assume what I'm about to ask is already known and explained somewhere. Does information (news) travel through a set journalism hierarchy from event to consumer? Like.. Bang happens, an investigative reporter investigates, the IR's take goes to a producer or editor that judges the event's worth to the consumer, the producer brings the event to a broadcaster.. etc, etc.
I like watching cnn/msnbc and UA-cam for news. But after watching the first 4 Trump years and being horrified by Trump and his daily delusions I just can’t watch anymore news about him or his incompetent cabinet choices. I’m taking a Break from almost all news until the next presidential election.
it's not the media or the medium. its the people/institutions we once trusted. Everyone--everyone--feels like they were intentionally gaslit (except, of course, those enjoying the warm glow of gas heating or still blinded by the light). Speaking of: did Springsteen get paid like Beyonce and Oprah?
3:05 tells me why I will not follow your channel and likely avoid your takes from here on out. "I'm trying to occupy the middle" "Sometimes democrats do dumb stuff/sometimes republicans do dumb stuff". Both sides share in doing dumb stuff...but not proportionately. Your safe statement is an example of several reasons viewership is down 50+% across major networks. Take a position, hold the line, call the BS and stop 50/50'ing this dumpster fire just so you don't alienate any potential right wing viewers? This isn't that small of a needle to be threading. I know you were just trying to play that statement safe..... But we're not having that anymore. It's ok if only one side does 95% of the dumb stuff. Call it appropriately.
Chris, as one of your first 1000 followers I'm in a weird way super proud of you (and am eagerly waiting for your 50k video). A shame to see that your videos have such bad quality lately. I mean HD-wise, of course ;). Plz fix it! And on to 100k!!! Love from the Netherlands.
Is it possible that this decline is just fatigue from excess coverage of election and people will return to CNN and MSNBC? If traditional news is gone, what happens to White House correspondants, the White House briefing room? and who will be there to film and broadcast King Donald's "chopper talk" ? Trump still wants/needs traditional media to broadcast his message.
I’ve come to understand that exposing oneself to the hour-by-hour news cycle makes one susceptible to the gaming of the news cycle by Trump and other players.
The problem with alternative news is that it's not news. It's punditry. When will news start reporting at the local level instead of the personalities and gamesmanship in DC? Maybe when (and if) they do that, then people might have some faith in journalism. Until then, it's just hot air.
So I date back to black and white with only three channels. I used to watch MSNBC. But two years ago I had it with the awful Dish DVR and canceled. I was going to change to Directv but started watching UA-cam and never did. That is probably why I'm watching this video.
Comcast not even every channel + slow internet= $264 a month 2 unlimited data tablets and one iPhone =$152 a month I cancelled cable. The 49ers suck this year anyway 😢
Thanks Chris. It can’t come soon enough for me. I just rechecked Hulu, UA-camTV, Sling, etc. They all want ludicrous $$ for their stupid bundle BS. Until they go to an ala-cart format I will remain on the sidelines. I am not going to fund channels I have zero interest in watching, come back when you can be serious. Oh, wait… you mean you’re sinking already? Buh bye! 😑
Personally I do a mix; UA-cam, (Chris everyday) MSNBC; some CNN and starting to use podcasts. I was more left but find find myself left center to a little right center ; I am older and it’s starting to show (sigh).
Cable news, like broadcast news of old, requires you to watch at specific times. If it's not convenient, then excerpts on UA-cam or posts to socials are the only way to consume their products - and then it's minus their advertising. Seems like a lose-lose scenario all the way around.
I think the Cable TV era is coming to an end. There is ever less new and ever more one sided opinion on Cable, so why watch it when you can get opinions from a number of sources at your convenience and for free on the internet?
Personally, I stopped watching cable news years ago because I don’t want to listen about Donald Trump 24/7. Also, these channels helped him get elected twice due to their nonstop coverage, which actually normalizes his behavior.

I agree. Is there a better quality video?! Its only at 240p.🧐
Must Sell Network By Christmas done shitted the bed, and errybody gettin' coal in they stocking.
Chris, I think a lot of folks go to UA-cam together their news, I do! I always appreciate your neutral opinions😊!
This video was only available at 144p & 240p. Looks terrible. Was this done on purpose?
@otsoko66 Correct. But 100% of the time, there is no vote from the homeowners. Decisions made by board and management company.
@@otsoko66 Correct. But boards and management companies make decisions like cable acquistion without taking any vote whatsoever. Allowed by state law.
What's with the poor video quality
I used to work for Nielsen. Ppl born after 1990 don’t watch TV. And it’s not gradual at all (like someone flicked a switch at that time)
it's not the media or the medium. its the people/institutions we once trusted. Everyone--everyone--feels like they were intentionally gaslit (except, of course, those enjoying the warm glow of gas heating or still blinded by the light). Speaking of: did Springsteen get paid like Beyonce and Oprah?
I am one who’s stopped watching cable news after the election just to take a break. Once things start turning to shit under trump, I’ll be back.
My thought exactly.
Digital broadcast television has provided many free channels with a simple antenna which is a nice option to a monthly subscription bill.
3:05 tells me why I will not follow your channel and likely avoid your takes from here on out.
"I'm trying to occupy the middle"
"Sometimes democrats do dumb stuff/sometimes republicans do dumb stuff".
YT transcodes lower rate video first. Wait a bit, then watch.
Having way too many shows covering the same story over and over has run its course. There is other news in the world other than US politics
Cancelled cable over the weekend…
I’ve come to understand that exposing oneself to the hour-by-hour news cycle makes one susceptible to the gaming of the news cycle by Trump and other players.
That's so cool Chris my birthday is on December 22nd
Damn dog, 240p?
What you describe does not sound like a move to bring people together.... but rather, the opposite that's not good
240 really?
The problem with alternative news is that it's not news. It's punditry. When will news start reporting at the local level instead of the personalities and gamesmanship in DC? Maybe when (and if) they do that, then people might have some faith in journalism. Until then, it's just hot air.
I don't watch mainstream media... I watch l8beral and progressive channels here on UA-cam.
So I date back to black and white with only three channels. I used to watch MSNBC. But two years ago I had it with the awful Dish DVR and canceled. I was going to change to Directv but started watching UA-cam and never did. That is probably why I'm watching this video.
Comcast not even every channel + slow internet= $264 a month
2 unlimited data tablets and one iPhone =$152 a month
I cancelled cable. The 49ers suck this year anyway 😢
Its a sea change into a sewer pit
Comcast announced it was ditching cable right around the time the crap about msnbc started. It will either get bought or die. Meh..
Buh bye! 😑
Oof the 240p quality upload doesn’t look great. Well, I’m here for the words first, chris’ beautiful face second. 😅
There is no middle or both sides in my world
Personally I do a mix; UA-cam, (Chris everyday) MSNBC; some CNN and starting to use podcasts.
Weren't you on cable, I don't have tv any more
Haha. Chris, "holding space".
Personally, I stopped watching cable news years ago because I don’t want to listen about Donald Trump 24/7. Also, these channels helped him get elected twice due to their nonstop coverage, which actually normalizes his behavior.
Who's going to do the research?
