@invisible ghost hahaha no it doesn't cringe, not sure some of your fellow turkish people would like that though But we will continue improving our Turkish and maybe we do something like that! Thanks for the idea 😊
I spent two years in Turkey when I was 21 and had just finished college. I loved the country and the people. Now I'm approaching 80, and I still love Turkey. Turkey feels like part of my family.
I lived in Istanbul for 4 years, I completed my undergrad over there. I love it! I've never felt any kind of discrimination or racism due to my skin color. I was exposed to racism for the first time here in the US. Turks might sound violent especially if you don't understand Turkish, and they want to know more about where you're from, and all that because they're really curious. Especially when I first moved there we were among the few black people in Istanbul other than tourists. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Yeah, we are curious, because we don't have much chance to go abroad and visit other countries. We don't have much opinion about other countries, cultures or foreigners. That brings the extreme hospitality and curiosity against foreigners.
I am with you on that. I wish others felt the same way about this as you do. Unfortunately, in the US this topic is in everyday life and continues to be very dangerous for many. I don't think words can explain the euphoric feeling I had being in Turkey. Thank you for allowing me to feel at home in such a beautiful country. I can't wait to go back.
Türk insanlar çok cana yakın samımı insanlardır çok türk arkadaşlarım oldu hep yardımcı olmayı çalışıyorlar dinini ırkını farketmeden saygı duyuyorlar Somalidan selamlar olsun türk millette ♥️👍🏽
I went to Turkey last summer and it was the best summer of my life. People are generous, fun and they are kind. Also they are extremely kind to strangers. I learned that it is like a tradition to make their guests at home and making them comfortable as they best can. Too bad that the media makes them look like terrorists. Wish you the best!!
That is correct. This video was recorded in June last year, so we probably crossed each other. We are back now and we truly love this country. We have decided we want to share about traditions, behaviors and more so we can all understand each other more instead of just listening to what media has to say. It is indeed sad the bad reputation Turkey has. We have some great videos about the hospitality and about foreigners who live here. Hope you get to watch them!

Excellent video, thank you. I am from Somalia, I went to Istanbul in 2017. Honestly speaking, I was really amazed by the beauty of the city and its people. At the beginning, I was skeptical going to Istanbul by myself, I even tried to cancel my ticket at some point. There are many videos on UA-cam that makes one scared of this city before he even gets there. I went to lots of places: Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. After staying there for a week, I loved this beautiful historical place, and I am planning to go back there soon.
We are very happy that you went and you enjoyed it as much! We also loved it as you have seen in the video and we hope many more people get to experience this wonderful country and its people and food! Hope you get to go back soon

Hey, The Mamuchos! I live in New York as a Turkish girl and I realized and have more knowledge about racism after I came here. People who are coming from different culture lives in Turkey and even we don’t know their religion or ethnicity. We are just living our lives together, friendly. They are asking similar questions every time when we talk about Turkey and this video will give them more ideas. I’m glad that you have a wonderful time in Turkey Love you guys! BLM
Hello Sevcan! Thank you so much for your message. We have some Turkish friends in NY too, Lieles is from Brooklyn and we lived together in Queens for many years. Thank you for sharing your experience, many non-black or non-people of color think we talk too much about racism, but the reason we talk about it is to create awareness as how it works in the US. As you well say, you noticed a difference once you arrive to the US, and it is something that doesn't exist in Turkey. For that, we are very thankful and we felt like at home. Thank you for sharing our video, hope it helps other people see the beauty of Turkey. We hope to go back to Turkey soon and hope you join us in our travels Much love to you!

I live in North America -- for the last 10 years whenever I fly to Europe I exclusively take Turkish airlines & stay in Istanbul for a night or two before going to Europe to perform. I absolutely LOVE Istanbul and the country at large and the people are AMAZING ! my mother’s family is Lebanese and my fathers family is Southern European so I think we share the same basic culture ! So happy to know you guys enjoyed your time there thank you for making this video ❤️🌹
Absolutely agree, I also believe that most countries around the Mediterranean sea, share some of the family and human values. We were supposed to go to Lebanon after Turkey this year, but then Covid happen and everything else. It is a bit sad to see the state of the world, but we must remain united and positive for a better outcome. Where in North America do you live at? I (maria) am from Spain
The Mamuchos yes absolutely I agree -- every time I go to any place in the Mediterranean I feel so much at home ! How cool you are from Spain - My father’s family is from Spain ( Andalusia ) and Corsica ( Bonifacio ) & my mother’s originally from Lebanon. I spent A LOT of time in Greece and of course in Turkey and I absolutely love it ! As for the world at large -- as incredibly sad as things currently are , personally I feel things will eventually get better at some point , just we have to get thru this very difficult period and keep strong ! I am currently based in NYC but looking to relocate to Europe ( I’m a classical musician who plays on broadway & in groups in Lincoln Center that now are all currently shut down until the unforeseeable future ) -however I’m all about looking at the silver linings and new opportunities from all of this so it’s all about new beginnings 😁but absolutely yes visit Lebanon when you both get the chance as you guys will ABSOLUTELY love it there between the food, sites and nightlife but again , we must wait till we all have a chance to reset ourselves and begin the next phase in life ! Right now Lebanon is on the same list as many other places for not being in a good period but as we say Inshallah this will come to pass at some point again 🙏

This is awesome to read! Where are you guys from? We love reading stories like this, this world could be so much better if we were more connected and respectful of each other, just the way we saw in Turkey. Happy you got to enjoy three different places and had an amazing experience
When I arrived Germany for the first time many persons asked me my idea about racism. I had never thought about the racial differences between blacks and whites so, I replied that all they have got a black skin so what? Then I felt their sarcastic gaze to my ignorance. I should have said something politically correct and act blacks differently. Even blacks are offended by my "laxity". That's why I feel that I have to say something anti-racist when I see a black guy. However, I think it was better when I was "colour-blind" like the Turks in Turkey.
Wow! This is a very deep comment, and we want to thank you for taking the time to watch us and write this comment sharing your experience. Let us share with you our thoughts from my point of view (Maria), European woman who was also color blind. For me (Maria) I totally felt the same way you felt when faced with that question in Germany, in my case, it was the US. Now, I don't call it so much color blind, I like to say I was oblivious to racism. Spain was under a dictatorship until the late 70's so there wasn't any immigration until mid 90s. So growing up, it was something I was not exposed to. But what I learned living in the US is that black people wanted to be seen, and treated equally. I feel that is what Turkish people do. They respect everyone, they see people, and color isn't a reason to hate or mistreat someone. Thank you
I understand what you mean but from my experience, it's not about neglecting or ignoring race but understanding you won't be treated differently because of it. There is a respect for race but more importantly, love for life regardless of it.
As far as I understand (please correct me if I am wrong) Madam Hanson wants to say that her colour is also her identity. Similar to you, I call myself Musulman or a person from a Muslim society although I am kinda atheist. Thus, I personally do not ignore the root or the other things related to identity but I wanted to indicate that it doesn't draw my attention by saying colour-blind.
Everyone has bad ideas about Turkey when they first arrived I met. But then they changed their minds. My former English teacher Alex, there are camels, girls wearing black headscarves, bearded men thought; But then he learned the truth. Turkey is very beautiful and has many cultures. I love my country. And thank you very much because with these videos you change a lot of people's minds. I hope you left Istanbul happy. This city will always be waiting for you.
We left Istanbul sad because we didn't want to leave 😭😭😭 But we will be back in spring and visit other cities and towns in the country, looking forward to it. Turkey is an awesome country and we will always be in love with it, and we will do everything we can to let people know about it. Thank you for watching us and for your comment.
İt's all the media. Turkey is presented in the western countries as a dangerous place. That's one of the reasons we make this videos, to show the true experience we live here and to show how wonderful the people and the country is.

Fun fact: James Baldwin loved İstanbul and even told that he could finally breathe in here. He was a really close friend of a Turkish actor "Engin Cezzar" and he had a big role in where turkish theatres are at today. And when he was here, nobody had ever seen a black man before so he was intoduced as a darker Arab i guess to explain his skintone, since Arabs are the most darkest color you could see in streets. And as a joke, a couple of close friends called him Arab as a nickname(I cant be sure if its racist in a way). Also an older friend of him told that there is no black and white in here, you can be dark or darker in color, thats all.
Hi Ekin! Yes we read about Baldwin during our 5 months being in Istanbul. The lockdowns gave us a lot of time to read and learn about pending subjects. We love his story, it is very inspiring and very telling. Thanks for sharing this information, it is so valuable
In Turkey, locals generally feed birds by trowing small piece of Turkish bagel ( simit ) , or small piece of bread. Seagulls easily catch breads while flying over the sea. 😉
They are well trained in centuries eheheheh, Once we were at grill party in Kinaliada/Istanbul (knows as princess island) My friends told me give these chicken bones to Seagulls lol I didnt know until then how wild they are, they attacked me, I was running they were top of me and in a second 3 seagull turned to 20-30-40. That is wonderful to hear how businesses work together there, and they buy local products from each other. Seems like a no brainer but not the case here as we all know in the US. We totally appreciate and think that idea of being able to donate money to help someone else at a local shop or restaurant so they can get some food for someone who is less fortunate is a beautiful idea and concept. If businesses here in the USA could offer this at their places, they would be surprised how many people would be willing to donate. Great video and loved seeing you guys spend your time in Turkey!! Love you guys to the mother effin' moon and BTW... we are guessing Maria will not be getting her teacup read again?? LOLOL
Totally agree, there would be people in the US who would help others, I think the challenging thing would be what companies would be willing to do this Any how! We love you to the effing moon giiiiirlssss

Hi Salman! Thank you for sharing your experience! Yes they don't speak many languages, but turkish is a beautiful (difficult) language and its worth trying to learn it. A lot of countries along the mediterranean just don't have that second language mentality. Spain is the same. Thanks for watching us from Canada. Where did you live in Turkey? Hey big man and your lovely lady, really enjoyed your video and your insights, as a black man myself who lived in Turkey, I wholeheartedly concur that Turks are the least racist people on earth, (most of them are color blind when it comes a black person, and I think it may has to do with their history and particular Sunni Islam of those who are Muslims), To be honest at sometimes being black become overwhelming, like when everyone wants to take a selfie with you like you were some famous person, (Fortunately there was no Coronavirus then). Moreover, if you really want experience what really Turks are like then you guys must visit Anatolia, specially central and northern Anatolia, places like Amasya, Bayburt, Beysehir, Ankara, Carsamba, Corum, Giresun, Ordu Kayseri, Konya and Sivan. etc. People over there are so friendly so welcoming and above all treat you like one of their own. I have to admit the fact that I'm practicing Muslim so in the hinterland of Anatolia this was huge plus point beside being black and quite tall like you but not as big (I wish), just teasing you bro. Honestly, I would urge you to visit Azerbaijan too. Just an incredible place and people. Thanks for sharing, do take care, stay healthy and enjoy your stay.
Thank you so much for you beautiful words! We love Turkey and we are aiming to travel back in Spring to all those cities you mentioned here. Azerbaijan has always been on our list but you know, corona. Let's see if we can go this year. We admire Muslim beliefs and overall how peaceful the religion is. Totally the opposite of what most western countries show us all. This year we want to talk more about it in our videos and show the world the beauty of the religion and the people. Where are located now? Stay safe too!
@@mariaandbryan First, thanks so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it. I am delighted to see that you guys enjoyed your stayed here. It seems that you really experience the hell out of Istanbul. Great video.
I live in New York but I grew up in Istanbul (Kadikoy to be exact) and I go back twice a year because I have family there. I am so glad to see that you had a nice experience.

Thank you
I agree, I learnt racism in Ny.
Same here I learned about racism in USA . I grew up in Turkey and we never talked about racism and its also against my religious beliefs.
We left Istanbul sad because we didn't want to leave 😭😭😭

Why have the people have negative feelings bevore they cometo Türkey ,howecome⁉️
Turkey is a secular country actually.
İt's all the media. Turkey is presented in the western countries as a dangerous place. That's one of the reasons we make this videos, to show the true experience we live here and to show how wonderful the people and the country is.
Yes, i keep answering that to many people in our most recent videos. Especially to comments as "i didn't know they were allow to drink" "turkey is an arab country" "all turkish are muslims"
So thank you for adding it here too, Yaren

Firstly thank you for this beautiful video as a Turk. Then I Want to say we Turks do not know such a concept as black person white person or redskin.Sorry, but these concepts exist in the Christian world. For us Turks, everyone is human, everyone is equal and everyone has the right to equal life.👍👍
ı dont agree that , but most of the people are respectful .
@@kalilrage8873 Truth... Hispanics in the US say they are not racist because are mixed (similar to many Turks) however you bring a black girl or boy home and see your parents reaction... I think tolerant/respectful vs true acceptance are 2 different things...

How do the birds catch the food in the air when you throw it at them??? That’s crazyyyy

In Turkey, locals generally feed birds by trowing small piece of Turkish bagel ( simit ) , or small piece of bread. Seagulls easily catch breads while flying over the sea. 😉

Hey big man and your lovely lady, really enjoyed your video and your insights, as a black man myself who lived in Turkey, I wholeheartedly concur that Turks are the least racist people on earth, (most of them are color blind when it comes a black person, and I think it may has to do with their history and particular Sunni Islam of those who are Muslims),
To be honest at sometimes being black become overwhelming, like when everyone wants to take a selfie with you like you were some famous person, (Fortunately there was no Coronavirus then).
