    Great job Mark but I guess the next problem you’ll have is how to attach these incredibly strong steel reinforced backing plates to your already weak spongy bulkheads. Two different materials? Remember ocean gate!!!

    thing are working out well for you. I lived on a sailboat for 20 years and did all my own repairs and upgrades. now that I am in my late 70's it is too much work. I really think it is great what you are accomplishing. Make sure you thank your dad a lot. You are very lucky to have him.

      Not overkill. Wharrams are sailed with rather loose rigging. Also, as being catamarans, they don’t heel as easy as a monohull. Both of these factors mean that the forces on the chainplates can build up much greater than on similar seized other boats

    • @user-qk9tq1rt7o
      @user-qk9tq1rt7o 5 місяців тому

      @@alfreddaniels3817 The chain plates take the load and transfer it to body the boat. The backing plates only ensure the chain plate bolts do not pull thru the hulls and help spread the load to the hull. They do very nothing to enhance the strength of the hull Doubling the chain plates themselves is not a bad idea. But way overkill on the backers, adds weight for nothing. at most doubling the area around the bolts only. Ultimately all the load is transferred by the bolts, if they are too small or weak the size of the backer wont make any difference.

    • @alfreddaniels3817
      @alfreddaniels3817 5 місяців тому

      It depends how strong the body of the boat is it at the place where the chainplates are connected. Chainplate at the outside and backingplates on the inside are bolted together with the hull between them. They act as one and spread the loads to a larger surface of the hull and to stronger parts of the boat. There are boats that have backingplates that go all the way down to the keel where that is the strongest part of the hull. There are boats where the “ backingplates” are a complete internal steelframe, like a bulkhead.

Wharram was a genius, when he designed these. some of the best boats ever to ply a chop! on tops of that you will gained skills that last a lifetime, and you can even use to make money when travelling!

    What you can do to not have stuff bend is alternate between welds (inside and outside) and another thing is to use some random rod (doesn't need to be stainless) and tack that rod at the edges to keep the bracket from bending inside, once you're done you cut the rod off.

    A good tip to help when welding stainless is to brace it up while your welding it, that's how you eliminate a fair amount of warpage. Its important not to grind away too much of the weld to make it look pretty you want to have strength and integrity left after you've finished cleaning up the weld. but looks like it should be ok for what your using it for. nice to see you've acquired some welding skills. Mark. Its a handy skill to have.

  • @briandale8386
    @briandale8386 5 місяців тому +2

    The trick to those chainplates is polishing them to perfection. Any little scratch will become rusty over time . Especially in salty air . The backing plates not so much . You can use ospho on the backing plate. It takes a while for it to dry on stainless but it really holds back the rust. An example of a scratch would be using an oscillator cutting the plate out of the deck and putting deep scratches in it . Or putting a v notch around the chainplate to except butyl

    • @delukxy
      @delukxy 5 місяців тому +1

      Depends on the quality/grade of the stainless whether rust will be a problem. The metal came from the old lifeboat. If there is no rust showing on the scrap from there all should be OK. It can be painted before or after fitting. No need for it to be kept looking shiny inside the boat.

    My only concern is that in last episode, when your dad was test fitting the wooden template (made at 90 degrees), the side that goes to the bulkhead didn't fit properly (was 1-2 degrees off).

    In 1000 years, when archaeologists did up the remains of your boat, all that will be left is the sticky tape holding the windows on and those chain plates!👍

    I wouldn’t worry about what anyone else thinks about the chain plates, if your Dad thinks they’re going to work, they will! I’m still so glad that you decided to take on this project, I feel like it’s going to be the one that you’re happy with, you’re already learning so many new things like the Welding! You can always stop and find welding jobs if you ever need to, but more importantly you’re becoming self - sustaining……Hope you had a Happy New Year!!

    Great to see you welding now.
    Mate your very watchable and you edit the weekly episodes leaving us itching to know what next. So glad you bought this boat rather than the other one on the other side of the world as that would have been a nightmare.
